New Marketing Manager Welcomed by MVIS

As a small team, it is always sad when a member of staff departs but with a new employee comes new skills and fresh ideas. Last week, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and also a new face in our in-house Marketing Department.

We’re delighted to announce that Ben Kettell has joined us as our new Marketing Manager. Ben is an experienced marketeer and Marketing Manager in addition to having expert skills in graphic design. He will be working alongside Alex Handley, our Marketing Executive who has recently been promoted from Marketing Assistant and Ben Ashman, our Data Assistant. Together, they will continue to grow and improve our marketing channels.

Prior to working in the hospitality industry as Marketing Manager for two of Derby’s most established businesses, Ben has worked in marketing for a number of respectable B2B and B2C companies in the travel and retail industry.

Ben is now in his second week at MVIS and is starting to get to grips with an exciting new industry and our wide range of products and solutions. Outside of work, Ben is a passionate Derby County supporter and regularly attends home and away matches.

Ben Kettell comments, “I am delighted to join the MVIS team. Their enthusiasm for their work and expertise is unrivalled I can’t wait to get stuck in. I look forward to sharing ideas and working with the entire workforce to grow MVIS in new and exciting sectors along with building on the strong foundations already in place.”

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director comments, “Ben really impressed us in the interview process and I have no doubt that he will be a great addition to our Marketing Department and the MVIS team. He brings with him a solid set of marketing and creative skills that will help to expand and improve our current marketing infrastructure.”

Meet our FIR Ambassador

The Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) programme is an industry-wide initiative that aims to make the workplace better for everyone.

FIR Ambassadors promote a culture of Fairness, Inclusion and Respect within the organisation where they work in. They are expected to embody the principles of FIR: work collaboratively, whilst stepping in to take action, challenge behaviours and positively impact workplace culture.

We are delighted to announce that Clair Tranter, who works in Customer Relations, has become our FIR Ambassador for Construction. Clair is proudly part of the LGBTQ+ community and will help to drive the FIR message throughout the MVIS and Bartco UK team. With Pride Month just ending and many more Pride events to come this summer, there’s no better time to celebrate fairness, inclusion and respect in the workplace.

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), promoting an open, inclusive and friendly company culture is extremely important to us and having an FIR Ambassador on board further shows our commitment to this. We take pride in the training, treatment and support of our staff and see this as a step further to supporting them even more.

Clair Tranter comments, “I am extremely proud to become an FIR Ambassador for MVIS Ltd. I am part of the LGBTQ+ community but I feel there are always new things to learn. I only recently learnt about all the different types of flags you would see at a Pride event. I look forward to working with the rest of the team to make sure that everyone is continued to be treated fairly and with respect.”

Anne Ashman comments, “It’s great to have an FIR Ambassador as part of our team. I want everyone to feel safe and supported in order for them to reach their maximum potential.”

Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2022

During National Apprentice Week 2022, we are shining the spotlight on the members of our team who came to us over the years as apprentices and celebrating what they have achieved so far. We have had 9 staff members join us at an apprentice level, with 8 of them continuing with us after the completion of their apprentices.

Our longest serving former apprentice is Rebecca Prince, who joined Bartco UK as a Business Administration apprentice in 2015 and quickly progressed in the company to her current role as Purchasing and Stock Control Supervisor. Working alongside Bec in Purchasing and Stock Control is Pip Wood, who joined the Bartco UK team in early 2019 as an apprentice. Pip is extremely dedicated to her skills development, taking on fire warden and manual handling training during her apprenticeship.

Also starting in 2015 was George Sheldon, who joined us as an apprentice after studying Electrical Engineering. George has since completed his level 3 apprenticeship in 2019, seeing him progress within the company to the role of Senior Workshop Technician with fellow former apprentice, Cain.

Since joining our apprenticeship programme in 2017, Cain Gregory has come on leaps and bounds professionally during his time here and has recently completed his apprenticeship. In an effort to further his skills, he has recently completed CAD training and is currently doing a supervisor training course. We were so impressed initially with Cain’s talent and work ethic during his work experience that we very quickly asked him to stay.

Our most recent apprentice is Jacob Spencer, who is in year 1 of his Technical Apprenticeship. In a similar fashion to Cain, Jacob quickly impressed us with his amazing work ethic and attitude. Jacob is perfectly suited to his role with us, allowing him to stay busy doing what he loves.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director comments, “all the apprentices that have come through either MVIS or Bartco UK’s doors have been given the encouragement and space to develop their skills. We cannot recommend the recruitment of apprentices enough to employers looking for hard working and dedicated individuals.”

MVIS and Bartco UK want to take this opportunity to thank our apprentices, both past and present, for all their hard work.

For more information about our apprentice program, please contact us on +44 (0) 3300 080 366 or email info@bartco-uk.com.

2021 Annual Round Up

It’s been another unusual year for everyone as the ever-evolving situation with COVID has been more up and down than even the year before. As we began 2021 entering into England’s 3rd national lockdown, months later restrictions were eased off as the nation focused on vaccinations, allowing society and business to emerge from the imposed isolation of 2020 and begin to get back to something that resembles normality.

Despite this, things for most people will never be the same again. The same can be said for many businesses, who have had to continue to adapt to COVID-safe working environments, economic changes and of course changes to the way that all businesses operate. As a group, MVIS and Bartco UK underwent significant changes in 2021, but these changes have been ones that have allowed us to not only continue to deliver the excellent service that our customers expect, but to actually exceed the standards that we have set for ourselves.

We started 2021 as we were throughout 2020, still on the front line of COVID messaging, with public information delivery being an important part of keeping people safe. The nationwide deployment our units in town and city centres followed the same crowd control model more regularly seen by us when providing portable VMS for events. The adaptable nature of our service and our products provided a smooth transition into this realm of public notice, wayfinding and assistance for local authorities.

Ensuring that all our team were COVID Health and Safety qualified with CITB, we were taking no chances when it came to the safety and mental well-being of our employees, allowing us to continue to deliver our safety solutions for the safety and benefit of the general public.

When the restrictions were lifted, we did not just sit back. We maintained our strong focus on training and development. We have always been dedicated to the principles of safety, quality and best practice – accreditations help to underscore this focus. Our team are consistently training and looking for ways to improve on areas of skill levels and qualifications.

In the face of the global pandemic, we have been working hard in the background to ensure that we have the right accreditations to guide this dedication and focus, helping us to maintain our industry leading reputation during a time of uncertainty and instability. In this sense, not only did we put our focus on training, but also in maintaining the standards of a trusted and stable supplier of solar powered intelligent transport systems.

To enforce our ISO accreditations in the standards of quality (9001:2015), environmental management (14001:2015) and health & safety (45001:2018), we have earned other accreditations, memberships and recertifications this year that help to further our dedication and focus to these aspects.

Constructionline Gold, Gold status with the Supply Chain Sustainability School, recertification with Achilles Building Confidence, Cyber Essentials membership and the work we are doing through our membership of Forest Carbon’s Carbon Club are just some of the achievements we have worked on this year that allows us to continuously develop our commitment to safety, quality and the environment.

But our service is more than just these aspects. Indeed, focus on our products remains stronger than ever. 2021 brought a number of exciting product developments that we have already launched or will be launching soon. The ITS Environmental Sensor, for example offers clients a low-cost air quality monitoring solution that can be integrated with any of our ITS products. We have also made some significant upgrades to our Works Egress Safety Solution, making it simpler and more effective for site safety egress applications.

As 2022 comes around, we will be launching other new products that have been in development throughout 2021 that will bring new levels of safety and security to our customers.

Later in the year in 2021, we made a substantial change to the way we inform customers about our products and solutions at trade shows. At Highways UK, we launched a new method of sharing our product spec and info sheets with customers and visitors to our stands. In keeping with our commitment to the environment, we made the switch to using QR code triggered emails instead of handing sheets of literature out.

Not only has this helped the environment by reducing the paper, ink and the potential waste involved in the production and distribution of our literature, but it even reduced the fuel needed to transport the weight of our packs, which have now been swapped for a cutting-edge digital system that is both easy and convenient to use.

As our commitments extend further than the environment and safety, we also have commitments to improving our local community, especially in these times of difficulty. We have expanded our charity and sponsorship activities this year to be even more focused on our local community, including new sponsorship of the Derby Mountain Rescue Team, a voluntary emergency service who attend callouts in response to requests from Derbyshire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and West Midlands Ambulance Service.

We have also remained committed to local charities. Throughout the year, we have been raising money for Ashgate Hospicecare, a local charity who provide palliative and end-of-life care free of charge, caring for people living with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, neurological diseases, and end-stage heart, kidney and lung diseases. We have taken part in a number of our own fundraising activities in 2021 for Ashgate, as well as supporting them with signs for their own fundraising events such as the Sparkle Walk, the value of which being over £8,000 during the course of the year, taking the total amount raised for Ashgate this year to over £11,000.

For Christmas 2021, as well as continuing to support Ashgate with their Light up a Life Ceremony and Treecycle fundraisers, we also donated 2 signs to Blythe House Hospicecare’s Jingle Bell Jog too to help with wayfinding and promotion. The team at MVIS have also offered very generous donations to Clay Cross Foodbank to help local families who are in need of support have a nice Christmas.

It’s been a busy year at MVIS and Bartco UK whilst we continue to navigate our way through a world blighted by COVID. As commerce and industry wake up to the stark concerns over the environment, we have been joined by businesses all over the world this year as we also continue along our 10-year journey towards being carbon friendly, which started right back to basics with our solar powered ITS solutions.

Whilst we said good-bye to some team members last year, we welcomed several new ones too. New team members help to bring new perspectives, new ideas and new qualifications to the group, allowing everyone to benefit and grow as the company does.

We are all looking forward to the developments that 2022 will bring for us, as we launch new products as well as continue to develop our never-ending focus on safety, quality and customer service.

10 years of working with Intelligent Transport Systems

Anne Ashman, our Commercial & Operations Director is celebrating 10 years of working with us on the 5th September. We have spoken to Anne and asked her to look back on her time with the now group companies and how she has seen MVIS go from a start-up company with only 8 x Original Bartco 5 colour VMS in the fleet to the UK’s leading portable Intelligent Transport System Hire Company, having multiple new products and over 600 units in the hire fleet, plus the sale of multiple units through Bartco UK and supporting them through delivering top quality platinum service.

When Anne started with the then named company, “Colour Mobile VMS” back in 2011 as the office manager, the dream was to win the Olympic Games Lane Project in 2012 in London. This seemed an impossible task for the company with only 3 staff and only 8 units in the hire fleet. Jump forward 1 year, and the company had not only won and delivered the Olympic project, it had almost 200 units in the hire fleet, a new name, a new sales manager in Graeme Lee and a new product called the ‘2012 platform’, better known now as the Solar IP.

anne ashmanWithin 1 year of starting, Anne had been instrumental in the planning and shipping of the units from our now sister company Bartco AU, who manufactured the products for the 2012 Olympics, getting the units into the country in a very tight turn around window, often having to speak to shipping agents, customs and dealing with Forex companies to get the best exchange rates, this was no small task. On the back of this, Anne got promoted to Office and Finance Manager for the newly formed MVIS Ltd ITS Hire company.

Anne comments “after the Olympics was when the real work really started, having almost 200 signs with no established customer base was a very difficult time. We had units stuck in the yard, no hire system in place, a new sales manager and still only a team of 5 people”.

This did not deter Anne, in true ‘Anne fashion’ she rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in. Her day often included accounts work, chasing for payments, raising invoices, payroll, sales quoting, sales lead generation, marketing, web studio programming of the signs, getting units ready for hire, logistics of delivering, customer service, writing and implementing the much needed policies, procedures and processes, company first aider, even delivering the signs sometimes, generally the role was very all rounded at this stage with limited staff.

In 2013, when the then MD Tony Price left the company and Pat Musgrave become the new MD, Anne was promoted to General Manager. In the short two years of her employment, she had shown that she could easily manage the company and was the right person to take on the role, working with Pat and Graeme, to move it to the next level.

Since 2013 when Pat and Anne became the senior management team the company has not looked back, it has gone from strength to strength. In 2014 Bartco UK was formed to manufacture and sell ITS products in the UK, this also came under Anne’s watchful eye.

Since starting in 2011 Anne has seen the company go from 3 employees, Anne being the only original member left, to 22 staff across the 2 UK group companies, of which 20 Anne has recruited, these 22 staff make up everything that MVIS and Bartco UK are, with Anne’s passion, history and strive for perfection the team all buy in to this and give the best service to the company’s now large customer base.

During her 10 years with the group companies Anne has gained 3 ISO standards across the UK companies, she commented, “When I took this task on single headedly in 2014, as there was nobody else to do it, I really didn’t know what I had got myself into, I had a very quick learning curve and with a lot of extra hours worked I soon got in to the flow and gained the first 2 standards and implemented them across all areas of the business. Once Dom started to assist, it made getting the 3rd standard easier with two of us working on it. Since then, we have gone on to get many more accreditations and none have been as difficult, as we now know exactly what is needed, most recently working on our FORS Bronze accreditation together”.

Anne strongly believes in the personal development of herself and her team, often mentoring the apprentices and ensuring all new starters get the right training they need.  She has completed an OU Business Management Degree, gained a level 5 HR qualification, IOSH Managing Safely, Directors Development Program and most recently PRINCE2 Foundation & Practitioner qualifications whilst running the group companies, amongst other qualifications she has.

Anne continues, “Doing a degree and making sure my 3 children and husband had the best life and opportunities I have had, due to my work at MVIS, has just been the cherry on top of the cake. When I started here 10 years ago, I was so ambitious but really didn’t know if this new start-up company was going to help me realise my ambitions. Looking back, there are too many highlights to mention. But there was my degree, a very proud moment when I picked up my certificate in front of my family after 7 years of studying, trips to our sister company in Australia, trade shows across the UK and Europe, being involved in the 2012 Olympics, winning most of the major High Speed schemes across the UK in the last 10 years and having the opportunity to build and work with a fantastic workforce, I think I can say my ambitions have been more than realised. Every day here at MVIS and Bartco UK is different and I wouldn’t have it any other way, overseeing all areas of the business really does keep me on my toes and I love it”.

As a company, a group of employees and as individuals, we all wish to congratulate Anne on this very important milestone. Anne is the first member of staff to reach 10 years’ service in our group’s history and she is also the longest serving employee, marking not just a significant occasion for Anne, but also for the organisation in general and we are all looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us.

MVIS Prepares for Traffex 2021

After a hard year for the events industry, everyone is eager to get back to an element of ‘normal’ both in business and in our personal lives. However, in the short term at least, we still have to make allowances for the damage the pandemic has done when it comes to trade shows and other large-scale events.

One of the biggest adjustments affecting us has been seen with the temporary move of the industry trade show Traffex from a live event to a digital event, which involves exhibitors and attendees meeting on a digital platform rather than face to face. In line with the social distancing rules in place, the organisers of Traffex made this decision to push forward with a digital event rather than delay or cancel the event with the absence of a show last year.

Many people within the industry are very excited to take part in the virtual event, marking a commitment to virtual shows as we become accustomed the new, albeit temporary way of doing things.

Traffex has traditionally been a fantastic opportunity for networking and to catch up within the industry. With high quality guest speakers and a diverse range of attendees, Traffex delivers a show that connects people from all over the sector.

For 35 years Traffex has been the largest dedicated traffic and transport event in the UK, connecting forward thinking innovators with central government, local authorities and the private sector and this year promises to be no different.

Stated on their website, the Traffex organisers state, “Our state-of-the-art virtual event platform will bring Traffex Parkex to you, wherever you are in the UK and the wider world. […] Complete with a fantastic line-up of seminars in the conference and of course a great selection of exhibitors keen to share the latest products and technology from the sector, Traffex Parkex 2021 is back.”

Graeme Lee, Sales Director at MVIS comments “We are all eager to get back to the way things were but in the meantime, we need to find solutions around the current situation. We are looking forward to Traffex Digital as a means to stay well connected and catch up with the industry as whole.

You can see our stand live on the virtual platform from the 15-17 June 2021.

MVIS – Bartco UK Half Year Round Up

Since our last check-in in December 2020, a lot has changed within the companies. With the restrictions easing, we wanted to round-up the last 6 months of life at MVIS and sister company Bartco, to highlight the changes we have made internally.

During the last year, we have been able to use our products and solutions to help keep the nation safe with messaging and important notices. Not only have we been working hard to help towards safety for the nation, but we have also been hard at work in the background.  We are always looking to see if there is room for improvement of the service that we provide our customers and our community, from upskilling our team, to achieving the best in the industry standards and raising accreditations.

One of the achievements that we are proud to have earned is Gold status in the Constructionline Program, which offers a platform for thousands of buyers in the construction industry that enforces an ethos of trust and quality amongst its members. Our credentials were assessed for environmental management, quality management, equal opportunities, modern slavery act adherence and anti-bribery and corruption policies.

Whilst achieving Gold status may seem like a high climb for many businesses, for us here at MVIS, it was very achievable. Already having an integrated ISO management accreditation, which we recertified for in April 2021 along with Achilles Building Confidence it was an easy move for the team to obtain Gold Constructionline status.

Achilles Building Confidence is a UK construction industry accreditation and risk management scheme that aims to help organisations identify, assess, qualify, and monitor suppliers throughout the supply chain, reducing operating costs. Achilles enables communities of buyers and suppliers to build better business relationships through a more open, trusting and proactive approach. Sharing knowledge, standards and best practice leads to buyers and suppliers sharing success.

Not stopping there, we have also achieved Gold status in the Supply Chain Sustainability School, a platform that offers businesses extensive training around various sustainability, offsite, digital, procurement, lean and management topics relevant to the business environment.

The accreditations take their place alongside our team’s Highways England Passports and the list of reasons why you should ‘choose MVIS’. The Highways England passport database offers a smartcard for each worker – giving them a single, transferable record and confirms worker’s authority to work in real-time in areas of Highways England’s responsibility, enforcing safety standards across the board.

During the last 6 months we have also looked at the IT systems we use and remote working, this lead to us upping our game in security of our systems and gaining the Cyber Essentials Certificate of Assurance with the assistance of Sheffield based company Resolve.

It is not just in areas of accreditations where we have seen changes. After a long year of lockdowns, restrictions and daily updates from the Government, we have come to realise how truly vital our ITS solutions have been in directing and keeping the public up to date in the seemingly unpredictable future. Whether it be delivering information to shopping centre visitors about overflow car parks or directing delivery drivers to the correct unit on an industrial park, the original 5-colour Bartco portable VMS has been serving on the front line from day one of the pandemic.  Regularly seeing our units on the news headlines giving out information in high areas of Covid, helping to reduce the spread of the infection.

Following the same crowd control model more commonly seen when providing portable VMS for events, the adaptable nature of both Bartco web studio system and the products that we provide meant that when it came to displaying government slogans, we were able to adapt smoothly into the transition of a public notice, wayfinding and assistance for retailers and other industries.

In the last 6 months, we have also been working on preparing the launch of new solutions that we have been developing since before and during the pandemic, allowing us to help solve new and existing safety issues within society. With this being said, a company is more than just its products and accreditations, especially MVIS and Bartco.

Our responsibilities as a business in today’s world have only increased since the pandemic, with such a serious event in all our lives, we have to step up to our commitment as an employer across the UK to better support the lives of our team and our community.

At the end of 2020, we introduced a service offered by Peninsula called the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Already having a well-rounded approach to our team’s wellbeing thanks to other services that Peninsula have to offer, we understand that when it comes to Mental Health, there is never too much that you can do to support and provide stability within your team.

This EAP service is in place to help our staff with challenges and obstacles in everyday life. With their 24/7 advice line, face to face counselling and a suite of online tools, we want our team to be able to have all of the support to live a rich and fulfilled lifestyle so that we know we are getting the very best from them in day to day life and challenges.

But we haven’t stopped there – in early 2021, we mandated our whole team to sit the COVID-19 Site Safety Plus course accredited by CITB, a course that has an expiration of 5 years from completion that attests to the quality of information and learning received for participants.  We wanted the team in the office to understand the dangers out on site of transmission, by everyone undertaking the course we could support each other more safely.

Keeping staff morale high and maintaining a healthy work-home relationship during the last year has meant that we have had to get creative with our team-building exercises. Before COVID, we partook in regular social events which we believe is the key to our incredible bond between departments and is what makes MVIS and Bartco outshine our competitors in the customer service department.

Since this kind of social activity has been impossible during the pandemic, we have had numerous online social events and parties to maintain our in-house relationships and celebrated birthdays, anniversaries or just to catch up on a Friday evening.

Another area we have improved is in our commitment to our community. We are always seeking ways that we can assist local charities and causes, which has never been more important than it is now, having been dealing with the impact of COVID for over a year now. Three charities who have of course been impacted by this are Ashgate Hospicecare, Blythe House Hospicecare and Helen’s Trust, who are not only continuing to do their great work in supporting patients and their families needing end of life care but are also playing a vital role in our community’s fight out of the current pandemic,  despite the limitations placed on their activities.

MVIS are proud to support #challengeDerbyshire with our continued membership throughout 2021, as well as going towards helping our latest company charity, Ashgate Hospicecare, in line with our commitment to them, our local community and our corporate social responsibility.  To support the charity, we held a car boot sale that took place in early June 2021, raising a whopping £312.05 for Ashgate Hospice and also reducing unwanted household items being thrown away as the easier option.

An additional aspect of corporate responsibility that we have been addressing head-on recently is our local environment. Partaking in litter picks, ensuring our local wildlife system is thriving around our Matlock HQ and also having energy-efficient lighting and heating installed within the business are a few ways that we keep on top of to give back to our community.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director, commented “The first half of 2021 has set the tone and direction for our way out of this pandemic. As with 2020, this has been an eventful period of great change for not just us but the whole of society. We proved last year that the MVIS team are made of robust stuff, weathering the storm that hit us all with hard work and commitment, which is what you can expect from us coming out of it as well.”

The next 6 months will hopefully see us easing back into our typically normal day to day life, with businesses re-opening, it is exciting to see our local areas thriving as before. With our 9th year anniversary around the corner, we are proud to have such a wonderful team and support behind us.

Getting ready for Christmas

This year, probably more than most, we eagerly anticipate Christmas as a time we can celebrate or at least relax after what everyone would agree has been a very unusual year. Christmas is a time that we have traditionally taken very seriously at MVIS and despite the unusual circumstances, we are not letting it get in the way of our festivities.

At our Matlock HQ, the team have put the tree up and decorated, with everyone excited for our Secret Santa gifts, which have either been mailed to home workers or placed under the tree for those required to work from the building.

Just as with the way we have had to do our Secret Santa this year, we have seen many changes in the way we do business. COVID has split the team down the middle, into those who work from home and those who are required to work from the office or our workshop. However, with social distancing restrictions in place, even working from the building can be quite isolating.

It is for this reason mainly that Christmas brings us so much to look forward to this year. As the year has progressed, the opportunities for all of us to see our colleagues in a social setting has diminished. The idea of going for a pint after work seems like a distant memory for most.

Even though we will be unable to have a traditional Christmas party, we will be offering staff a fun filled virtual night, with drinks, quizzes, Secret Santa opening and a mystery box for each member of staff that’s not to be opened until the night of the party.

As well as this, we are of course taking part in our Christmas Charity commitments, which will be announced soon, and Christmas Jumper Day cannot be missed, even if you are working from home!

Also, stay tuned throughout December to catch up with what our Elvish counter parts are up to at our North Pole depot…

Portable VMS help with Parking and Traffic management under COVID-19 Conditions

One familiar application of portable variable message signs (VMS) we have been seeing an increase in this year is for parking. As coronavirus has cast doubt and confusion on many aspects of life we used to take for granted, there has never been more need for clarity on our roads and in our car parks. This is where MVIS have been assisting; our portable VMS offer a range of traffic management benefits for applications like parking.

During these times, certain buildings, shops and high streets may be closed, subject to different opening times or have different entry policies, all of which are useful to be informed of in car parks. Car parks are being increasingly utilised as a central point to communicate important information for general safety or regarding COVID guidelines. This is especially helpful in areas such as retail parks, where, as the situation changes, there may not be much clarity regarding which stores are open and which are not.

Car parks are an ideal location to deploy certain ITS units, such as our portable VMS or portable CCTV for any number of reasons. Working together, site managers can use the CCTV to monitor the car park even in low light. They can respond to situations as they occur using messages or pictograms displayed on the VMS, which can be updated quickly and easily using a mobile device or web browser.

Especially important for retail and local authorities, car parks offer an important opportunity to convey important information to drivers and pedestrians. This opportunity can even be utilised as a service, in being used as part of a socially distanced or contact free click and collect service, or a patient call out system for hospitals, for example.

MVIS Continues to support Local Authorities with ITS technology in a return to Tier System

The pressure is on for everyone right now to keep infection rates as low as possible. With COVID-19 tearing a hole through 2020, we all look to Christmas for some slight reprieve from the isolating and fearful conditions that this year has brought us. As everyone does their bit in this fight, local authorities focus on trying to spread the right message rather than the virus, with information being one of the main tools we have to overcome this.

Local authorities all over the UK are turning to MVIS to help, our portable ITS technology offers solutions to these specific range of issues we are having now, from crowd control to site management. Our variable message signs (VMS) can be deployed in key areas to maximise the impact of messages, which can be changed quickly and easily by your team or ours, allowing you to keep up to date as the guidelines change.

Depending on the tier your local authority is in, we can recommend certain products to be used that will help to de-escalate the situation. For example, Tier 3, ‘Very High’ is the most serious and therefore may call for the use of our wider product range. VMS, ANPR and CCTV maybe deployed to help at this level of severity, each tackling a different application.

Areas in Tier 2 may look to deploy our VMS to prevent the escalation into Tier 3 using emotive and impactful messages, such as the ones seen in Bolton just prior to the Tier system being introduced.

Tier 1, Medium alert, is currently the lowest used tier. This tier will likely be most used as infection rates go down, marking an improvement in the situation. However, that is a critical time in management of the virus and whilst local authorities may look to decrease their measures, it would be a bad time to remove them. Therefore, we still recommend a level of portable VMS support to remind people to not lose their focus.

To learn more about how MVIS can help you spread the right information in your community rather than the virus in the lead up to the Christmas period, please contact us via our contact form.

Helping keep Christmas COVID-Safe with Variable Message Signs

With Christmas right around the corner, Local Authorities are left with a big responsibility in helping to keep order and safety in communities, with the festive holiday presenting a vast risk in the spread of the virus.

As we emerge from another UK lockdown, our Portable Variable Message Signs (VMS) have been heavily relied upon by Local Authorities to help with the spread of information and the right message. Indeed, we have not only seen a huge increase in deployments for COVID applications, but the media too have also identified the power our signs can have, resulting in their use for photos in international news media ranging from the BBC to CNN.

The reason for this is clear; our signs are an effective and useful way to help get messages across, even in photographs, as the media can attest to. Available in 3 different sizes depending on requirements and with the largest fleet of portable VMS in the UK, MVIS can supply units for a wide range of applications within a COVID-19 setting, especially in areas that are likely to be busy during the Christmas period.

These applications include-

  • Communicating Tier specific rules
  • Blocking streets off
  • Staggering footfall
  • Traffic management
  • Pedestrian marshalling
  • Social distancing safety notices
  • Building opening & closing announcements
  • Queueing systems

Our signs are solar powered too, making them environmentally friendly. Requiring no fixed power source, our portable VMS can be deployed in highly targeted locations in your area, allowing Local Authorities the opportunity to concentrate resources in high risk areas to help combat the further spread of the virus.

What’s more is that all messages are programmed remotely without the need to attend site, using a mobile device or web browser which can be done by yourselves or our team. Once updated, our units display changes within seconds, and even the scope of what sort of message that can be displayed is incredibly vast, being ideal for text or pictograms, with multiple colour options available to help with emphasis and impact.

A reason to celebrate: The East Midlands Chamber of Commerce Awards

More than 120 organisations from across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire have been recognised in the 2020 edition of the annual Chamber of Commerce awards, and Matlock based MVIS and Bartco UK are both nominated amongst the category nominee lists.

In a year of grey clouds, the company is proud to announce a silver lining of multiple nominations in the prestigious regional award ceremony.

New categories have been added in 2020 – including the Environmental Impact Award, as sustainability becomes more and more prevalent across business practice around the globe. MVIS & Bartco UK has been nominated for 3 separate awards, including this new category – as their own commitment to reducing carbon footprint goes on and is now recognised.

The awards MVIS & Bartco UK are up for include:

Environmental Impact Award

For many years MVIS & Bartco UK has been thinking sustainably.

The companies have been reducing their carbon footprint via product development powered by solar sources, utilising a delivery model that deploys multiple units per journey, installing bee houses at HQ, continued home working for employees, costlier waste management systems – the list goes on. And that list makes it very easy to see why this category has MVIS on it’s nominees list.

Commitment to People Development

MVIS and Bartco UK prides itself on culture, and their employees adopt the company principles every day.

An area that MVIS & Bartco UK has absolutely excelled for some time now. This nomination is a testament to the hire and develop culture that is rife within the company’s fibre. With almost 40% having joined the company as apprentices, and over 50% having been with the company for over 4 years.

Leadership takes an active interest in keeping the workforce challenged and consistently upskilled, with Commercial and Operations Director Anne Ashman telling us:

“I am very much about constantly evaluating a person’s skills, seeing how they develop and grow, and as a result – if they then need a new challenge.”

The companies have a rich history when it comes to their people at the awards, with previous success being tasted in the apprenticeship category for the development of Tillie Wooliscroft from the marketing team.

Innovation in Manufacturing

Another area of pedigree comes in the form of innovation, with a previous victory being achieved in this category.

Never relenting on exploring new products, methods and systems, MVIS & Bartco UK finds itself back amongst the nominated in 2020.

Product development and Covid-19 adaptation have been at the forefront of innovation in 2020, and Bartco UK is looking to add a second innovation award to its list of achievements.

The winners…

Winners of the awards will be chosen during a virtual judging day by a panel including sponsors, a Chamber board member and a member of the Chamber’s senior leadership team. They will then be announced across three award ceremonies to be held in November and December.

Scott Knowles, Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), said:

“Our Business Awards are always a great opportunity to showcase enterprise success in the region, but perhaps this year will be even more special during what has been a hugely difficult time for many businesses.

“It was great to see that Covid-19 hasn’t stifled innovation, resilience, and a determination to grow and succeed among the region’s business community, with a very high number of applicants.”

Commercial and Operations Director for MVIS & Bartco UK Anne Ashman told us:

“Award nominations are always proud moments and the awards are usually a fantastic night where regional success is celebrated by us all. Whilst the physical award ceremony is off the table this year, we are still delighted to be nominated for what is ultimately the root of the awards night – excellence and best practice.

“Any victories we are fortunate to receive would be just reward for our entire team, who, to an individual have been nothing short of fantastic in this challenging year. Adaptable, versatile, resilient and dedicated sums each and every one of our workforce up, and we’d be delighted to chalk a victory or two up to our excellent people.

“Congratulations to everybody nominated and whilst we won’t see you on the night, we look forward to when we can celebrate again together as a region.”
