Vehicle Activated Speed Signs and MVIS

In the world of quarry operations, safety is paramount. With heavy machinery, large vehicles, and personnel working in often challenging environments, maintaining safety standards is crucial. One of the key advancements in promoting safety within quarries is the implementation of Vehicle Activated Speed Signs (VASS) and Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS).

Vehicle Activated Speed Signs (VASS)

What is Vehicle Activated Speed Signs?

Vehicle Activated Speed Signs, often referred to as VASS, are electronic signs placed strategically within quarry sites or can be trailer mounted to ensure slowed traffic site wide, meaning you can monitor and display the speed of approaching vehicles. These signs are equipped with sensors that detect the speed of an approaching vehicle and display it to the driver in real-time. If the vehicle exceeds the safe speed limit, the sign may flash or display a warning, alerting the driver to slow down. These solutions can also be fitted with Solar Panels, meaning that when strategically placed they can have run times months longer than a pole mounted solution.

The MVIS VASS sign also has the added benefit of ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), allowing the site to capture the number plate of any offending vehicle.  The online platform allows the safety team to run a report that captures the information, showing the speed and number plate, allowing the team to contact the haulier to discuss the speeding incident with clearly defined data.

Benefits of VASS in Quarries:

  • Enhanced Safety Awareness: By providing real-time feedback to drivers, VASS helps raise awareness about speed limits and encourage adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Reduced Accidents: Speeding is a common cause of accidents in quarries. VASS can help mitigate this risk by prompting drivers to maintain safe speeds.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Quarry managers can use data collected from VASS to monitor compliance with speed limits and identify areas or times where speeding incidents are more prevalent.

The Impact on Quarry Safety

The implementation of Vehicle Activated Speed Signs represents a significant step forward in enhancing safety within the quarry sector. By leveraging advanced technology to monitor vehicle speeds and conduct thorough inspections of data, quarries can effectively reduce the risk of accidents, improve compliance with safety regulations, and create a safer working environment for all personnel.

Conclusion

As technology continues to evolve, so does its application in industrial sectors such as quarry operations. Vehicle Activated Speed Signs Systems exemplify how innovative solutions can address longstanding safety challenges. By investing in these technologies, quarry operators not only prioritize the well-being of their workforce but also contribute to more efficient and sustainable operations overall.

Small Footprint. Big Impact.

Developed back in 2016, the HD Compact  was the first portable VMS of its size available to the UK market.

With over eight years of Research & Development, the HD Compact has undergone significant development since that first version. The latest version boasts many new features, such as integrated solar power, and the clever addition of a chevron frame, perfect for over height work.

Here, we shine the spotlight on 4 of the many aspects that make the HD Compact excel in urban environments.

  1. Small Footprint

As our smallest portable VMS, the HD Compact boasts an impressively small footprint. Urban environments often have limited space for construction work or road maintenance, so when it comes to messaging, how site managers use that space is of critical concern.

With the HD Compact, site managers do not need to compromise on messaging in the same way as they would for static signs. Using web browser or a mobile device, operators can programme or change messaging quickly and easily, creating cycled messages too that can communicate multiple messages using the same sign.

HD Compact VMS

This allows more detailed information to be communicated without taking up any more space, leaving room for other equipment that may help to increase safety, or simply by keeping the site’s area small, reducing the risk to workers, pedestrians and drivers.

  1. HD Display

Whilst this is a small unit, the HD Compact still boasts an impressive 28 x 28 matrix with a 20mm pixel pitch. This allows for the display to show a wide range of messaging and pictograms, enabling site managers to break down language barriers and communicate important messages effectively.

The display also features fully compliant EN12966 red and white dual colour LEDs, allowing messages to contain emphasis and display effective pictograms.

HD Compact

Using bright dynamic signs instead of dull static ones offers an obvious advantage in that messages are clear and stand out more, especially in the dark, which could help to increase safety at any time of the day.

  1. Solar Power

Integrating solar power with our HD Compact was a development that brought it in line with our other portable VMS, making our full VMS range solar powered. Due to the HD Compact’s very low power demands, solar power is a powerful addition to the unit, allowing it to offer highly extended run times under the right conditions.

The addition of solar power reduces the need for battery changes which can be a health and safety issue for any TSCO, having extra bodies on the ground in road works. It also helps cut the project’s carbon footprint too. Reduced battery changes means, a reduced number of trips from our nearest depot to the sign and then back again, minimising fuel use. This could be important for a company’s corporate social responsibility goals, as well as helping to cut down emissions seen in town and city centre’s, increasing safety for everyone.

This clever Solar Powered Compact base can also be adapted to replace the HD screen, with our small CCTV unit making it a truly multi-functional product.

  1. Data Collection Radar

Like all our solar powered VMS, the HD Compact comes integrated with a Data Collection Radar that can collect traffic trend data on time, date and speed.

In urban environments, this can be of great use for planning and safety, allowing site managers to report on levels of traffic around the work site, which can highlight risks and allow them to act on those risks.

HD Compact VMS BaseHD Compact VMS Analytics

Combined with the sign’s messaging capability, the Data Collection Radar makes this unit a perfect solution to deploy in the lead up to works being done, giving drivers warning of the disruption as well as collecting data on levels of traffic, allowing site managers to address risks before work even starts.

MVIS: Championing Wellbeing in the Highways Sector

MVIS: Championing Wellbeing in the Highways Sector

At MVIS, we are committed to more than just creating innovative solutions for traffic management; we are dedicated to the wellbeing of our team. Recently, we proudly participated in our latest “Journey to Wellbeing,” activity.

The initiative is aimed at improving mental health within the Highways sector.  It has provided a great opportunity to foster a supportive work environment, encourage physical activity, and promote mental wellness amongst our colleagues.

The Journey to Wellbeing Initiative

The Highways sector, a 24/7 industry, can be demanding. Often requiring long hours, high levels of concentration, flexibility and the ability to manage stressful situations. Recognising these challenges, the Journey to Wellbeing initiative was established to support those working in the sector. It aims to raise awareness about mental health, provide resources and support, and create a culture that prioritizes the wellbeing of all employees.

At MVIS, we understand that mental health is as crucial as physical health. That’s why we have 3 Mental Health first aiders and embrace this initiative wholeheartedly, encouraging our team to participate in various activities designed to promote a positive mindset and a healthy lifestyle.

The Olympics Quiz: A Nod to Our 2012 Legacy

In keeping with the spirit of the Journey to Wellbeing, we organized an Olympics-themed quiz. This was particularly meaningful for us, as MVIS played a crucial role in traffic management during the London 2012 Olympics. MVIS deployed a 177 VMS on the Olympic Route Network, this ensured smooth transportation for athletes, officials, and fans during the event, and it was a proud moment in our company’s history.

The quiz was a delightful mix of questions about Olympic history, MVIS’s involvement in the 2012 Games, and general sports trivia. The competition was fierce, but it was Sales Director, Graeme Lee who emerged victorious, clinching the gold medal by answering an impressive 12 out of 15 questions correctly. This was a fun and engaging way to reminisce about our achievements and connect over shared memories.

Running in Front of Our Vehicle Activated Speed Sign

In the spirit of physical fitness and friendly competition, we also held a unique event where participants ran in front of our new Vehicle Activated Speed Sign (VASS) to see who could run the fastest. Our VASS technology, which typically alerts drivers to their speed, was repurposed for the day to measure the speed of our runners.

With excitement in the air, our team members took turns sprinting in front of the sign. It was a great way to get everyone moving and have some fun. Marketing Executive Ben Ashman claimed the title of the fastest runner, clocking an impressive 20 mph. The event was not only a test of speed but also a great way to encourage physical activity and camaraderie among our team.

A Commitment to Wellbeing

At MVIS, we believe that a healthy mind and body are key to a happy and productive life. Our participation in the Journey to Wellbeing initiative is just one example of our commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture. We are proud to support our team members in their journey towards better mental health and overall wellbeing.

As we continue to innovate and provide cutting-edge solutions for traffic management, we remain dedicated to promoting a work environment that values and supports the wellbeing of every individual. Together, we are building a brighter, healthier future for the Highways sector and beyond.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency: Why Quarries Need Mobile Visual Information Systems Products

In the realm of quarry operations, safety and efficiency are paramount concerns. Integrating Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) products addresses these challenges head-on, offering many benefits that significantly enhance operational processes and quarry safety protocols.

Let’s delve into why quarries should prioritize the adoption of MVIS Intelligent Quarry Systems (IQS):

Real-time Visibility and Monitoring

Quarries are dynamic environments where constant movement of heavy machinery, personnel, and materials occurs. MVIS products such as the Compact Portable CCTV Solution and Portable Solar Powered Site & Compound CCTV cameras, provide real-time visibility across the site. This capability allows quarry managers and operators to monitor operations remotely, identify potential hazards, and promptly respond to emergencies.

Improved Safety Protocols

Safety is non-negotiable in quarries due to the inherent risks associated with heavy equipment and challenging terrain. These MVIS products enhance safety protocols:

The MVIS PORTABLE VMS-A and PORTABLE VMS-C. They can be used to display safety messages to quarry personnel and visitors to ensure all safety procedures are adhered to. Allowing the health & safety team to provide relevant live messaging on any safety concerns, planned blasting or restricted areas.

Access

Quarries are dangerous places. Employees who work at the quarry are aware of the location’s hazards. Visitors to the site, however, are often ignorant about quarries’ dangers.

By using the MVIS SOLAR-POWERED BARRIER you can use the whitelist/Blacklist functionality to allow on site staff members, but ensure visitors stop and report to reception prior to entering site, this ensures only access to those you want on site.

Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) products are not merely technological upgrades for quarries; they are essential tools that enhance safety and streamline operations. By investing in MVIS products, quarries can achieve significant improvements in efficiency, mitigate risks, and ultimately create safer working environments for their personnel. Embracing these innovations is not just about keeping up with industry trends but about prioritizing the well-being of everyone involved in quarry operations.

Alleviating Anxiety on our Roads

In today’s fast-paced world, the daily commute or road journey can be a significant source of stress, tension, and anxiety for many individuals.

The uncertainty of traffic conditions, roadworks, and unexpected delays can trigger worry and frustration, affecting our mental well-being. However, there is a solution that not only provides essential information but also helps alleviate anxiety and reduce stress levels: variable message signs (VMS).

Our portable signs displaying real-time information on road conditions and journey times have a surprising impact on the mental strain experienced by road users. In this blog, we will explore how VMS can benefit mental health by reducing stress, tension, frustration, and worry, and how they contribute to a more positive and anxiety-free driving experience.

The Detrimental Effects of Stress and Worry

Stress and worry take a toll on our mental and physical health. The constant anticipation of traffic congestion, unexpected roadworks, or delays can create a sense of helplessness and exacerbate anxiety. Studies have shown that chronic stress contributes to a range of health issues, including high blood pressure, insomnia, reduced cognitive function, and even depression. Therefore, finding effective ways to minimise stress and worry during road journeys is crucial for promoting mental well-being.

Stress-Relief: Real Time Information

Variable message signs play a vital role in reducing anxiety by providing road users with up-to-date, real-time information. These signs display essential details regarding road conditions, alternate routes, and expected journey times, allowing drivers to make informed decisions and plan their journeys more effectively. By knowing what lies ahead, road users can mentally prepare for potential delays, reducing the element of surprise and the resulting stress.

Alleviating Anxiety

The fear of the unknown is a common source of anxiety, and this applies to road users as well. The ‘what ifs’ that accompany a journey can cause significant stress and worry. However, VMS products provide a solution to this problem. By displaying vital information these signs address the uncertainty that often plagues drivers. They act as a reassuring guide, eliminating the need to imagine worst-case scenarios and allowing road users to focus on the present moment.

Reducing Frustration

Delays and unexpected road incidents can quickly lead to frustration and tension. Traffic congestion, detours, or unclear directions can trigger emotions that are detrimental to mental health. Variable message signs mitigate these negative emotions by keeping drivers informed and aware of the situation at hand. By providing accurate and timely updates, VMS help drivers anticipate and understand the causes of delays.

One major additional benefit is the one our roadworkers can experience. A calmer driver is less likely to subject roadworkers to a torrent of abuse – something roadworkers sadly face on an increasing basis.

MVIS Sales Director Graeme Lee said:

“There are some really important elements to portable VMS that we believe are overlooked. In a world where stresses are high enough, we don’t want a road network filled with anxious, angry drivers -it isn’t good for anyone. Journey time information is so important to drivers and enables them to adapt as they travel. With the common integration of Bluetooth into cars now for telephone use, an informed driver can keep in touch if required to advise of any changes to their journey and subsequently, their plans.”

Ashgate Hospice: The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility

MVIS has been working with Ashgate Hospice for many years now, over this time we have proven useful to Ashgate, raising money through Car Boot Sales, Bake Offs, and Sponsorship of Ashgate Events.

Why do MVIS do it?

There are multiple reasons a company will help charities, such as Ashgate Hospice, with sponsorship or money raising events. The obvious being the good feeling of helping a small charitable organisation, raising money for them helps them to continue their charity work and pay staff members, so charity work continues.

The other reason being to improve a companies Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Being a company that collaborates with charity often, we have been able to spread our charitable word through Blogs, Social Posts, and Website Uploads. In doing so, we have been able to give our company a positive image. Meaning we have a positive Business Reputation, improved Brand Recognition and a greater ability to attract Talent and Retain Staff.

How MVIS has helped Ashgate Hospice

There are many different ways in which we have helped the team at Ashgate. From continuous participation in the Treecycle, to hosting a Movie Afternoon for the team.

Other ways in which we have helped include:

  • Sparkle Walk – MVIS sponsors the Ashgate Sparkle Walk yearly. A walk throughout Chesterfield, during the night wearing pink light up ears. This year look out for MVIS staff members taking part during the walk.
  • High Peak Trail – A walk through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside to help raise money for the charity. MVIS’ Staff Juliette Wright and Anne Ashman took part this year.
  • Movie Afternoon – Before Christmas the MVIS team visit the Hospice and serve hot chocolate, tea and coffees to the volunteers. Helping them relax and unwind before Christmas.
  • Car boot Sale – Over a few weeks the MVIS team donated some of their old items to the Car Boot sale pile. In doing so we were able to take them to the Tansley Car Boot sale with all the proceeds going to Ashgate Hospice.
  • TreeCycle – Each year two MVIS team members take our service van. Helping the Ashgate team to collect Christmas Trees from houses and turn them into biofuel.
  • Bake Off –  We give staff the opportunity to pretend that they are on the hit TV Show, The Great British Bake Off. Having them bring their bakes in over the weeks in a tournament to see who is our Star Baker. Currently being Jacob Spencer, 3 Years Running.

Why Should CSR Be Implemented

Corporate Social Responsibility has many benefits to your company. If you are not already implementing a CSR campaign. you should for these reasons:

  • Better brand recognition.
  • Positive business reputation.
  • Increased sales and customer loyalty.
  • Operational costs savings.
  • Better financial performance.
  • Greater ability to attract talent and retain staff.
  • Organisational growth.
  • Easier access to capital.

To Conclude

MVIS has been implementing CSR into circulation for years. Doing this has ensured we have a positive image to customers old and new. Having a positive social image is helping us in our business, as people want to work with companies helping Charities.

We have also been able to highlight our achievements and explain how they are helping the Hospice move itself forward and ensure that staff and patients are happy.

So we have been able to help our business while helping others.

World Environment Day: Taking Action for a Sustainable Future

This year is the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1973.

Why Should You Celebrate World Environment Day

Celebrating World Environment Day is essential as nature is in emergency mode, every century we get closer and closer to more extreme Global Warming Conditions. if we do not halve Greenhouse Gas Emissions by halve, we will be victim of the worse global warming effects ever by 2030.

Air Pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by over 50%, meaning we will have to implement safety guidelines when going grocery shopping or out on activities.

The amount of plastic waste in oceans will have tripled by 2040. leading into the theme of this years awareness day which is…

Solutions to Plastic Pollution

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is in production yearly. Most of which is single use. Of this large amount on 10% is recycled.

Most of the plastics end their life in lakes, rivers and oceans. Estimated at 19-23 million tonnes, approximately the weight of the Eiffel Tower.

With plastics in lakes and rivers we not only need to think of the wildlife, but also consider Microplastics. Humans consume up to 50,000 plastic particles annually. Harming human health and pollute our beautiful natural landscapes.

How MVIS Contributes

Being ISO 14001 Certified since 2016 we have been lowering our Carbon Emissions for 8 years. We have been able to implement different ways of of ensuring our workshop is not giving off carbon emissions.

All Workshop staff have been trained to ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ old units and repair them so there is no unnecessary waste of metals, plastics or wiring.

We also use WEEE Collections to dispose of components that have reached the end of their. Disposing of them ethically.

Read our ‘Sustainability in the Workshop’ blog to see how we stay sustainable.

How Can You Help?

  • One important yet easy conscious change you can make is being more mindful about how you dispose of your waste. Especially your plastics.
  • Taking part in litter picks with your local communities or councils also help – Clearing the floor of plastics that are potentially dangerous to humans and wildlife alike.
  • Join the #BeatPlasticPollution Movement – Meaning you can Access more information and actions you cnan carry out to contribute.
  • Sharing Environment Based Social Media Content – Sharing content to raise awareness such as UNEP’s LinkedIn or this blog.

Making more mindful decisions in your business or your day to day life will continue to help UNEP and the World Environment Day Committee lower Carbon Emissions and Plastic that people are discarding everyday. As well as monitoring how much plastic and emissions there are.

Implementing practices like MVIS has, helped us lower our emissions and continue to be a sustainable company.

Being Sustainable With Solar Powered Products

Sustainability has been at the forefront for us as a company for a decade now, and as a result, we’ve been reflecting back on over ten years of commitment to being sustainable. As well as offering products that are solar powered, we’ve also taken action in helping to reduce our own environmental impact

The very nature of our products has a strong environmental focus and they’re all designed to be energy efficient. Over the last 12 years, we have improved our unit’s batteries and solar panels in line with the latest innovations in their respective technologies. By using tilting and more efficient solar panels, it has resulted in improved run times and fewer battery changes, which means fewer journeys need to be made.

Our solar powered range of products offer an alternative to fixed solutions that draw power from the grid. They do not need to rely on external energy supply and therefore are highly portable and can be deployed in locations where fixed solutions can’t be. The applications that our products can be used for can also help promote an environmentally conscious way of thinking. The VMS-A and VMS-C can be used to spread messages that can influence driver or pedestrian behaviour, such as reminding drivers not to leave their engine running idle or encouraging people not to litter.

The fact we specialise in solar power enables us to offer our environmentally friendly products to organisations looking to minimise their own carbon footprint and environmental impact. Our data collection solutions can help Local Authorities and other groups determine levels of traffic and their speed, which can then help them make environmental decisions on issues like air pollution.

To help cut down on the carbon footprint of our service, we have taken action in reducing the amount of fuel that we use. Our custom-built beavertail vehicle allows us to deploy 3 x VMS-A units, 2 x VMS-C units, or 2 x Solar IP units in one delivery. By being able to transport multiple units in one single trip, it minimises our fuel consumption and time on the roads.

It has never been more important to be acting in ways that promote sustainability and general care for the environment, but this is something that we have been doing consistently for over a decade. Whilst we’re proud to be an environmentally responsible company, having a ‘green’ focus isn’t just embodied in our products but in our actions too. As is the MVIS way, we will always constantly be searching for ways to be more sustainable and reduce our footprint even further.

Anne Ashman, Group Commercial and Operations Director comments, “There is always room for improvement when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint and we have taken measures and joined initiatives to help achieve this. MVIS has remained committed to giving back to the environment for 12 years now and will continue to work towards a sustainable future.”

For more information about MVIS environmental policies, please see the ‘Environment’ section on our Safety Hub.

Festivals and Events: Struggles and Solutions for Advertising

Of all the Sectors affected recently with economic changes, the Events Sector has been hit the hardest.

Why Is That?

With issues such as the ‘Cost of Living Crisis‘, people are not allocating parts of their monthly budget towards Events. Because of this, Events companies and Festivals are struggling to bring in the important revenue that can be allocated towards advertising.

The Effect.

Without Events budgets being allocated to advertising, they are receiving no exposure. Meaning people are not informed of events being hosted in local areas. Meaning they are relying on word of mouth and Social Media to get their message across.

Without important Banners, Leaflets or Signage being placed on roadsides or in certain local stores, Festivals and Events are missing out on an older audience.

Posters or Banners are also one use so is it worth designing a new banner for one use?

VMS FOR FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

The Solution: MVIS VMS.

MVIS VMS are programmable over any length of hire or sales using the handy WebStudio Webpage. Meaning, you do not have to stay to one message, they can be programmed to have pictograms, slogans, or details on purchasing tickets or dates.

MVIS Customer Relations team will deploy and Collect the VMS. This way Festivals and Events companies do not have to collect promotional material. It is sorted by MVIS’ Team.

What are the other benefits of MVIS?
