World Environment Day: Taking Action for a Sustainable Future

This year is the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1973.

Why Should You Celebrate World Environment Day

Celebrating World Environment Day is essential as nature is in emergency mode, every century we get closer and closer to more extreme Global Warming Conditions. if we do not halve Greenhouse Gas Emissions by halve, we will be victim of the worse global warming effects ever by 2030.

Air Pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by over 50%, meaning we will have to implement safety guidelines when going grocery shopping or out on activities.

The amount of plastic waste in oceans will have tripled by 2040. leading into the theme of this years awareness day which is…

Solutions to Plastic Pollution

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is in production yearly. Most of which is single use. Of this large amount on 10% is recycled.

Most of the plastics end their life in lakes, rivers and oceans. Estimated at 19-23 million tonnes, approximately the weight of the Eiffel Tower.

With plastics in lakes and rivers we not only need to think of the wildlife, but also consider Microplastics. Humans consume up to 50,000 plastic particles annually. Harming human health and pollute our beautiful natural landscapes.

How MVIS Contributes

Being ISO 14001 Certified since 2016 we have been lowering our Carbon Emissions for 8 years. We have been able to implement different ways of of ensuring our workshop is not giving off carbon emissions.

All Workshop staff have been trained to ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ old units and repair them so there is no unnecessary waste of metals, plastics or wiring.

We also use WEEE Collections to dispose of components that have reached the end of their. Disposing of them ethically.

Read our ‘Sustainability in the Workshop’ blog to see how we stay sustainable.

How Can You Help?

  • One important yet easy conscious change you can make is being more mindful about how you dispose of your waste. Especially your plastics.
  • Taking part in litter picks with your local communities or councils also help – Clearing the floor of plastics that are potentially dangerous to humans and wildlife alike.
  • Join the #BeatPlasticPollution Movement – Meaning you can Access more information and actions you cnan carry out to contribute.
  • Sharing Environment Based Social Media Content – Sharing content to raise awareness such as UNEP’s LinkedIn or this blog.

Making more mindful decisions in your business or your day to day life will continue to help UNEP and the World Environment Day Committee lower Carbon Emissions and Plastic that people are discarding everyday. As well as monitoring how much plastic and emissions there are.

Implementing practices like MVIS has, helped us lower our emissions and continue to be a sustainable company.

Being Sustainable With Solar Powered Products

Sustainability has been at the forefront for us as a company for a decade now, and as a result, we’ve been reflecting back on over ten years of commitment to being sustainable. As well as offering products that are solar powered, we’ve also taken action in helping to reduce our own environmental impact

The very nature of our products has a strong environmental focus and they’re all designed to be energy efficient. Over the last 12 years, we have improved our unit’s batteries and solar panels in line with the latest innovations in their respective technologies. By using tilting and more efficient solar panels, it has resulted in improved run times and fewer battery changes, which means fewer journeys need to be made.

Our solar powered range of products offer an alternative to fixed solutions that draw power from the grid. They do not need to rely on external energy supply and therefore are highly portable and can be deployed in locations where fixed solutions can’t be. The applications that our products can be used for can also help promote an environmentally conscious way of thinking. The VMS-A and VMS-C can be used to spread messages that can influence driver or pedestrian behaviour, such as reminding drivers not to leave their engine running idle or encouraging people not to litter.

The fact we specialise in solar power enables us to offer our environmentally friendly products to organisations looking to minimise their own carbon footprint and environmental impact. Our data collection solutions can help Local Authorities and other groups determine levels of traffic and their speed, which can then help them make environmental decisions on issues like air pollution.

To help cut down on the carbon footprint of our service, we have taken action in reducing the amount of fuel that we use. Our custom-built beavertail vehicle allows us to deploy 3 x VMS-A units, 2 x VMS-C units, or 2 x Solar IP units in one delivery. By being able to transport multiple units in one single trip, it minimises our fuel consumption and time on the roads.

It has never been more important to be acting in ways that promote sustainability and general care for the environment, but this is something that we have been doing consistently for over a decade. Whilst we’re proud to be an environmentally responsible company, having a ‘green’ focus isn’t just embodied in our products but in our actions too. As is the MVIS way, we will always constantly be searching for ways to be more sustainable and reduce our footprint even further.

Anne Ashman, Group Commercial and Operations Director comments, “There is always room for improvement when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint and we have taken measures and joined initiatives to help achieve this. MVIS has remained committed to giving back to the environment for 12 years now and will continue to work towards a sustainable future.”

Festivals and Events: Struggles and Solutions for Advertising

Of all the Sectors affected recently with economic changes, the Events Sector has been hit the hardest.

Why Is That?

With issues such as the ‘Cost of Living Crisis‘, people are not allocating parts of their monthly budget towards Events. Because of this, Events companies and Festivals are struggling to bring in the important revenue that can be allocated towards advertising.

The Effect.

Without Events budgets being allocated to advertising, they are receiving no exposure. Meaning people are not informed of events being hosted in local areas. Meaning they are relying on word of mouth and Social Media to get their message across.

Without important Banners, Leaflets or Signage being placed on roadsides or in certain local stores, Festivals and Events are missing out on an older audience.

Posters or Banners are also one use so is it worth designing a new banner for one use?

VMS FOR FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

The Solution: MVIS VMS.

MVIS VMS are programmable over any length of hire or sales using the handy WebStudio Webpage. Meaning, you do not have to stay to one message, they can be programmed to have pictograms, slogans, or details on purchasing tickets or dates.

MVIS Customer Relations team will deploy and Collect the VMS. This way Festivals and Events companies do not have to collect promotional material. It is sorted by MVIS’ Team.

What are the other benefits of MVIS?
  • Recognised Safety – Our products are safety solutions, being on any worksite ensures that you are practicing safety and means that you will be recognised as a safe event by customers and officials.
  • Wayfinding – our products are not only great for advertising but for helping you find your way to parking or to specialised areas within your event.
  • Site Security -  our ITS Product, the Solar Powered Barrier is fit with ANPR. Uploading a White/Blacklist to WebStudio ensures that only certified people are entering. Our range of CCTV also ensures a watchful eye over your site.
  • Environmentally Friendly – All of our products are Solar Powered and refurbished in our workshop. Meaning Festival and Events organisers can shout about an environmentally safe festival.
  • Long Battery Life – As mentioned, our products are solar powered. So our battery life spans the entirety of your Event, long or short.
  • Cost Effective – Hiring VMS does not hurt budgets as much as is assumed.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

This week (13 – 19 May) sees the return of Mental Health Awareness Week for 2024. With this year’s focus being on Movement. Since 2001 the Mental Health Foundation has shone the spotlight on mental health across the UK. Each year, they encourage millions of people to take part, from schools and further education, private & public sectors as well as families and individuals.

Here at MVIS we go the extra mile to ensure that we protect the mental health and wellbeing of staff with our monthly Journey to Wellbeing tasks. Working in an industry that suffers from high suicide rates, it is of vital importance that we stay one step ahead when it comes to mental health. The initiative, which was introduced by National Highways back in 2023 has seen the team take part in a host of different tasks with the aim of improving mental health by communicating and working as a team. Each year National Highways releases a yearly planner to follow with tasks which we have adapted to best suit our workforce and to increase communication. These include: Game Show style challenges, quizzes and even outdoor team games such as Rounders and Cricket.

Over the years, we have taken several steps to safeguard our team’s well-being and mental health. One of the things we’ve done to support our team is by giving them access to 3 qualified mental health first aiders. Our mental health first aiders are Rebecca Prince Purchasing – Supervisor, Jon Larkins, our Midlands and Northern Hub Manager and our Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman

Along with these measures, the MVIS team also have access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), an anonymous advice and support service offered by Peninsula where staff are able to access structured counselling should it ever be needed. If you feel that you may need advice or support on your mental health, some helpful links will be included below.

Anne Ashman said, “The mental health of our team is one of our top priorities and these initiatives provide the ideal opportunity for them to have a break and spend some time together. Here at MVIS we have been working with our staff for a long time now on ways we can best safeguard their mental health and wellbeing, which has helped us build the support system we have in place today.”

In June of 2022, Britain was in the heat of the fourth hottest summer on record, reaching heights of over 40 degrees. Meanwhile, Our Sales and R&D Team were demonstrating the MVIS products to a brand new audience at Hillhead.

As it is predicted to be another scorching event, it is imperative that while visiting the show, you bring these essentials:

  • Water – Whether you have a refillable bottle or you have a stash of plastic ones, it is important that you keep yourself and your team well hydrated. Keeping hydrated is good for refreshing yourself, keeping you muscles energised and your brain on top form.
  • Shade – if you are exhibiting it will benefit you to ensure you have a tent or stand that has plenty of shade keeping you out of the sun, doing so lowers the risk of skin cancer and quickly becoming hydrated. It also gives delegates and excuse to come and stand in the shade of your exhibition.
  • Sun cream – Being out in the sun all day will take a toll on your body, as much as it is exciting to get out of the office and into the glorious sunshine. Bringing Sun cream will be perfect for application throughout the day, assuring a lower risk of Skin Cancer and preventing Sun Burn.
  • A Bag – this is essential for carrying you Sun Cream, Bottle and Sun Hat, it is also important so you can visit the MVIS stand and pick up a brochure and some goodies to take home with you.

CCTV: Securing Working Sites and Preventing Trespassing

What is the problem?

Trespassing is common on any construction or quarry site. Large sites that are unmonitored are often targets for threats as there will be no evidence of them on that site, other than word of mouth.

When being subject to trespassing, companies need preparation for these threats:

  • Damage of Company Assets – when a worksite shuts over an evening all company assets are being left unattended. Meaning they are susceptible to threats trespassing and potentially damaging assets.
  • Health and Safety of bystanders – if someone is to enter a site it is the companies responsibility to ensure they are safe. Whether it be a pedestrian, trespasser or a staff member. Injured members of the public can end in legal issue and furthermore be damaging to your company…
  • Damage to reputation – damage of a company asset effects the day to day of a company. Damage of reputation is a long lasting effect that could takes months to years to recuperate. If a bystander is injured on site, your company becomes associated with this.
What is the solution?.. CCTV

CCTV can be as simple as implementing a watchful eye over a site, while also deterring public from trespassing. The presence of a CCTV unit on site will deter most people at the thought of there being evidence against them if they pose a threat.

If the public aren’t deterred, CCTV will give you evidence to there whereabouts and what has happened. This can help in cases of proving someone has entered your site without permission. Also helping with protecting your site if a member of the public is injured while walking onto site.

All different Variations of a MVIS CCTV, five different images.

Why Choose an MVIS CCTV?

MVIS are dedicated to supplying the highest quality cameras possible and ensuring that customers are receiving the platinum level service.

Our innovation the MVIS Portable Solar Powered Site & Compound CCTV is perfect for alerting construction workers to trespassers onto their site, meaning they can then implement a safety measure against threats. Alerts are sent to the assigned person, such as security guards or site managers.

What Can An MVIS VMS Do For You?

The MVIS VMS is a versatile piece of equipment, made in the UK to meet UK needs.

Our VMS are commonly seen on the side of the motorway, but the potential of our VMS is endless. With a wide range of uses our VMS has many different areas of expertise and applies to many different sectors of business.

Here are just a few examples of what VMS from MVIS are suitable for: –

Highways

MVIS’ leading product is most known for being seen at the side of motorways helping the UK to achieve safer highways. MVIS provides a scalable, responsive, and cost-effective solution to the problems within the sector of traffic management.

These are but some of the perks of hiring a sign from a company such as MVIS, the VMS keeps traffic moving and the roads safe, but also with the MVIS environmental sensor you can measure the impact your scheme is having on the local area, these can be attached to any of our ITS products.

Our VMS are also equipped to tell you the length of potential travel times accordance to the work on the highways, a simple yet effective use that will affect a road users’ journey.  They will be able to adhere their journey in accordance to the lead times given to drivers to ensure they get to their destination as efficiently as possible while also keeping them informed while on the UK’s roads.

VMS-A’s are tailor made for Roads that have a speed limit of under 50, where as a VMS-C is made for those High Speed Jobs that require you to see the sign before you have passed them on A-Roads or Motorways, roads over 70MPH.

Airports

MVIS’ VMS signs are created to inform, this can be informing of upcoming traffic problems in any sector.  For example, at an airport, it’s easy to imagine that airport car parks get busy, especially around the school holidays. The solution…use one of MVIS signs, they are the perfect solution to the problem of overcrowded parking lots. It is easy to program a sign to redirect traffic to a different lot or even to express the potential wait times.

The importance of getting a message across is one of MVIS highest priorities, if an airport is in need of getting important information across to customers, such as the changing of a gate or the cancellation of a flight, why not do it at the beginning of their holiday at the entrance to the airport?

Construction

Site safety is important! As an employer, the number one priority is to keep the team safe and to look after a competent workforce, MVIS are one of the leading SME companies in prioritising the safety of their employees and the safety of their customers sites.

A VMS from MVIS is perfect for a construction site whether it be on the side of the busiest motorways or in the city centre. VMS’ can keep the area around the constructions site clear and decongested meaning constructions workers are able to perform their tasks in a distraction free but most importantly safe environment for them to be able to produce the best work possible.

All our VMS can be fitted with a radar to ensure that motorists driving around the sites are watching their speed.  If a vehicle exceeds a certain speed the VMS can display a speed roundel advising of the site speed and a message saying “SLOW DOWN” on the screen ensuring drivers adhere to the sites speed limits.

Quarries

Quarry sites contribute materials for construction to a wide variety of companies across the nation.

Over time when quarries have served their use, they are transformed into Landfill sites, helping local councils eradicate their litter problems and preventing sites from overthrowing and hurting the environment.

Where does MVIS play apart in this? We are the leading company in Traffic Management on sites across the UK. Trucks will come into a site and will get stuck in Traffic waiting for one way routes to be cleared, an MVIS Intelligent LED Sign is used to direct traffic with messages such as ‘Next Truck’ or ‘Wait at the Bottom’.

We have been able to implement this across many Quarry sites and it has proven to work keeping quarry managers happy and HGV drivers safe.

Events

Stand out from the crowd with responsive, high impact event communications.

If an event is being a planned whether it be a Festival, Sporting day, Pride, Fun Run for charity, a farmers’ market at the peak of popularity or a corporate event that the big sale relies on. There is no better way to make sure that the event goes without informing customers, hiring a sign from MVIS promotes your event.

VMS signs have many ways of being a help to any event, they can display timings of the events and when they start, allocate parking spaces for customers or even to advertise an event to make it as successful as a customer wants it to be.

With a proven track record of effective deployment and success, MVIS products have been tried and tested on some of the biggest events this country has ever seen, such as the 2012 Olympics, Brighton Pride, V Festival, Silverstone and The Grand National.

Ports

A journey to the port ready to set sail on a fantastic holiday is a nice way to spend hard earned time off work, but a port can also be an unsafe area.  Most port workers struggle to allocate traffic management and to enforce speed zones in the area to make sure that port workers are in the safest environment they can be.

Not only can MVIS ensure worker safety, but passengers setting sail on the high seas can get all the information they need such as where they need to park, where their boat is docked and how they need to get there.

Our VMS have many uses in all sectors and are adaptable to all situations.  As a result of its flexibility, It is easy to understand why a customer would want to hire a VMS from MVIS and why customers keep coming back to us for both hire & sale.

As well as award winning customer service, an MVIS VMS has all the extras and much more. As a company, MVIS has a lot to offer in accordance with safety and keeping workforces in top condition so they can continue to keep the UK running.

Are journey time solutions the key to eradicating roadworker abuse?

Roadworker abuse – it’s a hot topic. There have been many shocking videos across social media over the last few years showing innocent members of our peer groups being abused and tormented in their workplaces for no other reason than simply doing their job.

But, how do we stop it?

Without a straightforward fix, could we look to some of the innovative products and solutions available within our industry to play an increasing role lifting the burden on our roadworkers? Here, we explore one such solution from leading VMS and ITS solutions provider, MVIS.

Created in partnership with Highways England (HE), MVIS’ NTIS DATEX II Portable Journey Time Solution generates real-time journey time information for road users using data from the National Traffic Information Service (NTIS). Pioneered by MVIS, the system was the first such solution to enable real-time journey time information from the NTIS to be displayed on portable variable message signs (VMS).

The solution has a number of Key technical features which include messages in either amber or white, a five-minute refresh rate, manually set thresholds for minimum and maximum journey time of any route and more.

The real genius.

Typically, anyone asked would say that they dislike traffic or that they hate congestion, but what we as humans really dislike is the anxiety and uncertainty of not knowing how long the traffic will affect us for.

It isn’t necessarily the situation we find ourselves in, but the amount of anxiety and uncertainty that is caused from being in it that is problem number one.

Ask yourself, within reason, would you rather wait for 20 minutes knowing the specific length of the wait from the outset, or have a 15-minute wait with absolutely no clue when it will end? London underground station display boards, or the Uber map feature are two fantastic examples of knowing exactly how long a wait will be resulting in easing the anxiety of a journey beyond measure.

The MVIS NTIS DATEX II Portable Journey Time Solution is not in itself a product that reduces wait time. It can’t get you from A to B any faster. However, whilst it does not reduce wait time, it does make waiting much less frustrating and uncertain.

Roadworker abuse – a helping hand?

For the road user, the NTIS DATEX II Portable Journey Time Solution provides a significant reduction in the uncertainty caused by congestion. By displaying information refreshed every five minutes it delivers accurate, up to date, ever changing information. Whether a travelling professional or commuting with children, reducing the unknowns of what’s to come is absolutely vital to road user temperament and satisfaction.

For the road worker, a reduction in road user anxiety, frustration and potential aggression is invaluable. As a country with a serious problem when it comes to road-worker abuse, any solution that can alleviate some of the abhorrent acts and unreasonable language directed towards those working hard to keep Britain moving is a solution we need. A solution far more valuable than its primary purpose – something that fits with the MVIS ‘VMSo Much More’ attitude. Helping to eradicate Roadworker Abuse

MVIS Sales Director, Graeme Lee told us:

“Whilst we’re extremely proud of the quality of the NTIS DATEX II Portable Journey Time Solution and the technology behind it, that’s not where the stakeholder benefit stops. Information delivery and the efficiency of it is undoubtedly an important factor – but what that information actually achieves and how that information makes road users feel is the knock-on effect that isn’t discussed enough. If feeling valued and informed means driver temperament is more subdued, that’s only a good thing for the safety and happiness of the ladies and gentlemen who go to work day and night on our roads.”
