Product Integrations from MVIS & Bartco UK

The MVIS / Bartco UK group are well known in the industry for bringing cutting edge innovations to the market that help to raise safety standards across the board. Some of our latest product innovations have seen great success already, such as the launch of the HD Compact VMS version 2 in 2020.

However, there is one area of product development that has been seeing particular success within the group, and that is with our product integrations.

Product integrations form the foundation of our solutions that include the Solar IP, as well as offering enormous added value when it comes to our portable variable message signs, separating them from competing portable VMS.

The Solar IP by its nature is built for integrations. Offering a solar powered, trailer-based power bank that can be combined with other technologies to grant them portability. Whilst we do sell and hire the Solar IP to customers for integration with their existing technologies, we also have worked on our own integrations in partnership with other companies to hire and sell in their own right.

A recent example of this can be found with our Portable Low Light CCTV, which was developed in partnership with 360 Vision, using their Invictus HD camera.

The camera itself offers a fully ruggedized housing, with exceptional build quality. The toughened optical glass window features a wiper and its Pan & Tilt gearbox is ultra-reliable and resilient. Its integrated high-performance IR lights with intelligent control enables powerful performance in low light conditions.

As a result of the low power demands of this unit, it is able to perform to extended run times using our Solar IP as a power source, filling a strong market requirement for a CCTV product that is also portable, solar powered and has a much clearer image than seen in previous solutions in the market.

We have also recently developed a Portable IVD (Individual Vehicle Data) Radar, which employs proven enforcement-grade radar & measurement techniques to track & measure speed, length, lane/direction of individual targets.

The Portable IVD can replace intrusive high-maintenance loops and other radar mounting options with its use of the Solar IP, which serves as its power source. The applications of this solution are far reaching, offering sectors such as traffic management and events a solution that can meet such specific but common requirements.

Our VMS have also seen some drastic improvements in recent years, with a number of integrations that bring added value to their functionality.

One of these has been the Portable CCTV VMS Solution, which discreetly integrates a CCTV camera with our VMS-A, allowing you to have eyes on the ground without having to be physically present on-site, creating a surveillance and feedback solution that can be used to monitor and respond to situations quickly.

A very recent integration option has been the ITS Environmental Sensor, which can actually be integrated to any of our solutions and offers clients the ability to monitor the external environment, producing a wide range of air pollution data that can be used to inform and direct on issues of air pollution safety.

This solution is a low-cost system that offers the ability to build a high-density ambient air quality monitoring network that records data in real-time.

Integrating this sensor with any of our ITS solutions allows us to offer clients effective, multi-functional units that bring not just the benefits of the sensors themselves to portable applications, but also all the functionality of the products they are integrated with.

This is especially practical, as in many cases where environmental data is required, other ITS solutions would enhance safety or are already being used.

These product developments are a testament to our commitment to improvement and our customers. We continuously strive to offer our clients the very best with our products and service, giving rise to new and improved solutions that will offer added value to clients of all sizes.

Tom Hooton, Research and Development Manager for the group comments, “We are well known for bringing new innovations to the industry, such as the HD Compact back in 2016 which offered the first compact portable VMS to the market. We have not stopped innovating and have developed many important solutions that meet a variety of needs. Integrations form the backbone of these innovations as we look to improve what we do best, bringing added value to our products for our customers ”

He continues, “The next few years are going to be very exciting for us as we bring more solutions to the market that make use of our already multifunctional ITS fleet.”

Carbon Friendly for 10 years – from QR codes to COP26

Matters that concern the environment have always been important to us. As we navigate our way through the forever evolving Highways and Traffic Management industries, it has never been more important to be thinking and acting in ways that promote sustainability, carbon footprint management and general care for the environment.

The commitments spelled out in our Corporate Social Responsibility policy go further than that just what is expected from us by our ISO in environmental management (14001:2015). We have been on a journey towards being carbon-friendly for 10 years now, starting right back to basics with our products.

Our products are by their very nature environmentally friendly, being solar powered and offering an alternative to fixed solutions that draw power from the grid straight away helps the environment in this regard, which is an effect that is only increased by time.

Couple this with some applications that our products can be used for. For example, our variable message signs can be used to help spread messaging that can make an impact on people’s behaviour, such as reminding drivers not to leave their engine running idle, or even to help remind people not to litter.

We also offer a range of data collection solutions that can help Local Authorities, National Highways and site managers determine levels of traffic and their speed, which can then be used to make decisions that can affect the environment, such as issues regarding levels of pollution.

However, a recent product innovation offers a more targeted approach for pollution – the ITS Integrated Environmental Sensor, which can be integrated with any of our products as an additional feature which offers clients the ability to monitor the external environment, producing a wide range of air pollution data that can be used to inform and direct on issues of air pollution safety.

We don’t just embody environmental matters in our products, but in our actions too.

In recent years we have taken a number of steps towards our goal for carbon neutrality and have carried these through every level of our business.

We undergo continual improvement when it comes to our manufacturing. Over the last 10 years, we have improved our unit’s batteries and solar panels in line with the latest innovations in these technologies.

Better charging systems, as well as tilting and more efficient solar panels has resulted in improved run times and fewer battery changes, which means fewer journeys need to be made.

This has a huge impact across our entire fleet.

Some units in the fleet itself can be traced back over a decade now – with continual refurbishments and upgrades, we never dispose of a unit unless it is beyond repair, and even if we do, we salvage what we can and what is safe to, to minimise our waste.

To help cut down on carbon emissions from the deliveries of our products, we have developed a custom built beavertail vehicle to allow us to deploy 3 x VMS-A units, 2 x VMS-C units, or 2 x Solar IP units in one delivery. Our national coverage also means that we can pick the closest depot to deliver a unit from, saving staff who are further away the journey.

Perhaps one of our more wider reaching recent environmentally friendly policies has been our adoption of the ‘Carbon Club’ initiative, which was set up by Forest Carbon to allow smaller organisations and businesses to address their climate impact by planting trees and create new woodlands in the UK on our behalf. This will sequester greenhouse gases from the atmosphere for years to come.

We are committing to the initiative fully by paying for more trees to be planted for each contract our customers place with us.

Over the years, we have also seen significant upgrades to our Matlock HQ also. Technological solutions such as movement sensors and timers in our lights and hand dryers, as well as eco-friendly heating solutions have been installed, along with the introduction of a bee hotel and a hedgehog home that are fully maintained by our team.

Above the flower bed the bee house proudly sits

The importance of bees to the environment and global ecosystems are well documented, and the decision for hedgehog refuge is aligned with one of the downsides to the highways industry, with an estimated 25% of the population of hedgehogs being killed on UK roads each year.

To add to the effort to give back to the local environment, we also maintain an on-site flower bed with plants monitored by our team which offers the added benefit of bringing some natural beauty to our local area and nicely compliments the nearby bee hotel.

Where possible, we prefer to use local suppliers. In sourcing local services and products, we help to massively cut down on our carbon footprint whilst bringing business to our local area.

Major components of our products such as our trailers are sourced from a local business, and wider servicing of work vehicles is also conducted locally. The cumulative saving of these reoccurring needs being seen to in the area will have saved a huge number of travel miles compared to alternative services that may have been offering better rates in different areas of the country or even the world.

Even our waste management systems are carefully considered with regards to the environment. We utilise a specialist waste management company to sort and dispose of waste accordingly, ensuring that what can be recycled is disposed of in the correct way.

To help keep the local environment friendly for wildlife, the MVIS team have even been on local litter picks this year!

More recently, we have taken the next steps in our environmentally friendly journey. In preparation for Highways UK 2021, we have developed a new way to inform our customers about our products and solutions that breaks away from the conventional presentation folder and spec sheets, which cumulatively will have a marked impact on the environment.

Using QR codes, visitors to our stand were able to easily request an email to be sent to them automatically after scanning the code and visiting our website. A popup box appears requesting an email address, which, when filled in, triggers the email to be sent to the customer within minutes with the required spec sheets attached.

The paper, ink and the potential waste that is involved in the production and distribution of our information packs, has, over the years, undeniably left its mark on the environment.

However, as with many things, technology has assisted us in helping to address this issue. As a result, even the fuel needed to transport the weight of our packs won’t be used, instead being swapped for a cutting-edge digital system that is both easy and convenient to use.

What’s more is that at events, we have always given away reusable or environmentally friendly merchandise and we absolutely stay away from single use plastics. Goodies such as reusable bamboo coffee cups, trolley tokens and reusable face masks are given out to our customers in a reusable canvas tote bag.

To bring our journey even more up to date, very recently we were invited to the Balfour Beatty Sustainable Evolution Showcase, which is running alongside COP26 in Glasgow.

Based at Balfour Beatty’s Digital Innovation Hub, this event gave us the opportunity to support Balfour Beatty in a celebration of sustainability in the industry, demonstrating our solar powered products to visitors, school children, important delegates at the COP26 event and anyone else in the industry who are interested in sustainability in the industry.

Being present at a show like this gives us the opportunity to help education people on solar powered solutions that can benefit the environment, such as our ITS Environmental Sensor. In doing this, we are not only helping to spread the word, but also serving as an example for other companies who may be interested in embarking on a similar journey.

Graeme Lee, Sales Director at MVIS comments, “Being at the Sustainable Evolution Showcase is an important step for us. Being able to represent MVIS and support Balfour Beatty at a show of this magnitude is a clear example of where a focus on sustainability can lead.”

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director added, “There is always room for improvement when it comes to our carbon footprint and it starts with the small things. MVIS have remained committed to giving back to the environment for 10 years now and our commitment is only growing strong as we as a company grow. We are all looking forward to seeing a world where everyone takes environmentally friendly matters this seriously –  and if COP26 is anything to go by, we don’t think this is too far behind.”

Highways UK 2021 Review

Last year, due to the COVID19 pandemic, Highways UK was forced to move to an exclusively online platform, preventing the usual face to face networking that we have all become accustomed to at trade shows.

As the first year back at face to face events, Highways UK 2021 took off with a fantastic start. The MVIS team were out in full force with new and familiar faces at the event, offering experience to new members of the team in a true Highways UK way.

The event was a great success, with many people dropping by the stand to enquire about our solutions and say hi to our friendly team both in person and via the Swapcard app for the event. For the first time, Highways UK this year combined the best of the physical event and the digital platform we were introduced to last year due to the pandemic.

But it wasn’t just Highways UK who were innovating this year.

This year we also trialed a new QR code system that helped to reduce the number of physical product information packs we hand out, instead sending customers a convenient email with the product sheets attached upon scanning a QR code and inputting their email address.

We also saw a record number of merchandise bags handed out this year, with hundreds of people walking around the NEC over the 2-day event proudly displaying an MVIS bag for life, filled with helpful and environmentally friendly goodies that people couldn’t wait to get their hands on.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director commented, “Highways UK is the biggest trade show of the year and after the restrictions we all faced last year, it’s so great to see everyone out in force this year. This has been one of the busiest trade shows we’ve ever seen and we are very pleased to have been a part of it. We are looking forward to next year and hope to see just as many faces at the event in 2022, which we have already booked in a similar location!”

Mark Ashbee, London Depot Manager added, “Having helped set up for many events during my time at MVIS, it’s been fantastic to see the other side of things and attend this year in my new role as London Depot Manager. It’s been a very different kind of work to what I am used to, but it’s been a rewarding experience that has helped me get to know our customers better, as well as learn more about what the office team have to do to make these events a success.”

The whole MVIS Highways UK 2021 team wanted to wish everyone who stopped by a big thank you. We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Visit the MVIS Highways UK Team 2021 on Stand H72

Each year, the Highways UK event offers the opportunity to network with others in the industry, allowing companies to show their latest products or solutions and to explore other innovations the market.

This year, MVIS will be attending in force, with not only familiar faces, but also new ones to our company and to Highways UK that reflect the internal changes we have seen due to growth since the last physical Highways event in 2019.

If you are attending, you are very welcome to come by stand H72 to say hi to our friendly team and ask them any questions you may have.

This is who you can expect to be greeted by –

Anne Ashman– UK Group Commercial and Operations Director

As the central nexus of the MVIS machine, Anne Ashman will be attending to welcome visitors to our stand. With over 10 years industry experience, there isn’t much Anne hasn’t seen in her role with the company and this is reflected in her dynamism and passion for customer service.

As this year will be the first Highways UK show for some of our team, Anne’s presence will be a good way for new members of the team to meet familiar industry faces to the company.

Juliette Wright – Sales

Starting with MVIS back in January 2021, Juliette has experienced quite a lot in the time she has been working with us, being quite an unusual year thanks to the COVID19 pandemic.

Working in the front line of sales, Juliette is well adept at welcoming customers to MVIS, our services and of course, our platinum customer service. Juliette embodies the very core of the MVIS Platinum Service Promise and as a result, she will provide a friendly face for any visitor to our stand at Highways UK this year.

Mark Ashbee – London Depot Manager

Mark has been with MVIS since 2015 and ever since, he has proven himself time and time again to uphold the MVIS values of service and quality. Mark has a great attitude that exemplifies the kind of approach to our customers that we hold so important.

Mark has recently been promoted to London Depot Manager, an important post within the company that ensures the smooth running of one of our key depots in the UK.

With his friendly smile and can-do attitude, Mark will be on-hand to greet visitors to our stand with the same level of enthusiasm he gives to his day to day tasks.

Dom Bridge – Operations Manager

Dom Bridge may be a familiar face to some, having attended 2 Highways UK shows in the past. Dom is a leading figure at MVIS, having been with the company since 2013 and rising from an admin apprentice role to Operations Manager, there isn’t much Dom doesn’t know about the company and our products.

As such a knowledgeable point of call within the company, Dom has extensive experience dealing with our customer’s and our team’s questions with a smile!

Dom will be available to answer any questions you may have on our stand throughout the event.

Tom Hooton – Research and Development Manager

Tom Hooton has been with the group since 2014, working for MVIS sister company, Bartco UK. Tom’s hard work and knowledge on our products has seen him rise to the well-earned position of Research and Development Manager at Bartco UK earlier this year.

Tom’s knowledge and technical capability makes him a fantastic team member to chat to for anyone who has more technical questions about our products.

As his first show as Research and Development Manager, Tom is eager to assist at Highways UK this year.

Graeme Lee- Sales Director

Not without mention, Graeme Lee, our Sales Director will also be keeping a close eye on the event app. Unable to attend this year, Graeme is in Glasgow right now on behalf of MVIS by special invitation from Balfour Beatty for the Balfour Beatty Sustainable Evolution Showcase, which is being run alongside the COP26 Climate Change Conference at the SEC, also in Glasgow.

Graeme’s presence at the Balfour Beatty Sustainable Evolution Showcase is important, not just for the networking opportunity, but also to demonstrate the priority we place on sustainability and the environment, which is also backed up with our ISO in environmental management (14001:2015).

With this year’s Highways UK event being face to face with a digital component that has been brought over from Highways UK 2020 during the global pandemic, we are all able to benefit from the digital platform they have provided, which makes it possible for those who are unable to attend to still take part in some capacity.

Whilst Graeme will have his hands full at certain times, you are still welcome to send him a meeting request via the Highways UK app to catch up or to ask him any questions you may have. He will attempt to make the meeting or reschedule to a time he is available via a range of methods such as Teams, Zoom or just a regular phone call.

Continuing to Support Ashgate Hospicecare

Charities around the UK have been hit hard in recent years with the COVID-19 pandemic. Never before have charities struggled so much with organising events and raising money.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility commitments outline our responsibility to our local community and as needs change around us due to the pandemic so does our focus too.

In order to address these changing needs, we took on Ashgate Hospicecare as the charity that we support in our fundraising activities since the pandemic started in order to help Ashgate continue to support those who are living with a life-limiting illness, caring for someone who is or grieving the death of a loved one. Ashgate provides invaluable services to the local community that has had an affect on so many of our team working from our Matlock HQ.

Their far-reaching support and care for those who are extremely vulnerable in society makes them a very worthy cause anyway. Indeed, for many years now, we have offered the use of our signs around the local area for appeals to help raise publicity, as well as help them manage the traffic and with road closures for events such as the annual Sparkle Walk.

So far this year, the value of support MVIS has provided Ashgate Hospicecare through our signs has been £8,071 including delivery!

Anne Ashman, Commercial and Operations Director comments “Ashgate Hospicecare is an integral part of the local community and as difficult as the pandemic has been for everyone, we absolutely can’t lose sight of our commitments to our community. This was – and still is – a time when the community needs to band together to help those who have helped us for so many years. We are proud of the part we continue to play in supporting Ashgate.”

David Storer, Event Fundraiser at Ashgate Hospicecare added, “Anne and the team have provided VMS’s for multiple events and appeals that have really helped to raise the awareness of Ashgate Hospice and the vital end of life care that we provide across North Derbyshire.”

He continued, “MVIS are a pleasure to work with. They are always on hand to provide support across all of our fundraising events and go above and beyond to offer solutions that enhance our reach and help us to promote our brand across the region.”

Ashgate Hospicecare will go on to be our Christmas Charity again for a 2nd year running, and we have lots of exciting fundraising ideas on the cards this year, adding to the Bake Off we have recently finished, as well as the Car boot sale and the 17 mile High Peak Trail Walk completed by our UK Group Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman earlier in the year.

Helping the environment at Highways UK

Highways UK is one of the biggest trade shows in the highways industry, serving as an opportunity for those in the industry to network, share news and celebrate innovations that help to make the UK’s road network safer for everyone.

Last year, COVID put huge restrictions on what we could do with regards to events, pushing Highways UK to a digital platform that offered new opportunities to participants, but also felt the effects of physical isolation that the majority of 2020 brought to all of us.

However, as we learn to better deal with COVID as a society, 2021 brings even more exciting opportunities by being able to combine the best of the physical event and digital event, allowing those who are isolating or unable to attend to still take part in many aspects of the event from the comfort of their own home.

It’s not just Highways UK who are innovating too. In recent months, MVIS have been working on a new way to inform our customers about our products and solutions that breaks away from the conventional presentation folder and spec sheets, which cumulatively will have a marked impact on the environment, an impact that if we can avoid, we should.

Enter our new QR code system.

Using QR codes, visitors to our stand can now easily request an email to be sent to them automatically after scanning the code and visiting our website. A popup box appears requesting an email address, which, when filled in, triggers the email to be sent to the customer within minutes with the required spec sheets attached.

This system is an innovation that we have already seen the benefits of. As we move towards our goal of carbon neutrality, it brings us more in line with our own expectations and helps to modernise the way we inform our customers.

Attending on stand H72 on 3-4th November, visitors can drop by to see the system in action, along with exciting new innovations from us such as the ITS Integrated Environmental Sensor.

This year’s event promises to be eventful, as the first physical Highways UK since before the global COVID pandemic began. With the industry ready to go, we are very excited to take part and look forward to seeing you all there!

2021 Charity Bake Off

Week 1

Taking advantage of every excuse to help our local community, here at MVIS and Bartco UK we have organised a true Bartvis style “Bake Off” where we are holding competitions weekly and voting to ultimately find the true master chef here at our Matlock HQ. Yearly Ashgate promotes their “Care for a cuppa” campaign, asking for support by hosting a cake sale. With this as our inspiration, we have asked the team for volunteers in competing to be our 2021 Master Baker and all proceeds dedicated to Ashgate.

Week 1 has commenced on 6th September 2021 and we have had a strong start to the competition with Juliette, Pip, and Cain bringing in their homemade masterpieces for the rest of the team to judge. Coming together on a Monday morning was a boost in morale as this is something that we haven’t been able to do over the past year so this competition is our chance at getting the team together in a friendly competition. This week’s winner going onto the next stage is…. Juliette with her homemade pastry!

Next week we have 3 more members of the team battling for a place in the finale!

Week 2

On this week’s “Bake off” we have had submissions from Anne, Tim and Tom. Another strong week and after being judged by the rest of the team, the winner was revealed as Tim with his homemade bourbon brownies!

A lot of time and effort has gone into our team’s entries, with cinnamon swirls made by Tom and his little helpers over the weekend (who ate the first two batches for quality checks!) and a 5 layered rainbow cake made by Anne! Seeing the creations that the teams are entering each week and the effort that goes into making them is amazing, and choosing a winner each week is always a tough decision as they are all worthy winners!

Week 3

On the week commencing the 20th of September, we have had our second to last batch of bakers bring in their pieces for us to test. Each week it is getting harder and harder to nominate a winner, especially with this week’s Ben Ashman bringing in his homemade Vegan brownies, Sean Brown`s one-of-a-kind flapjacks and Rebecca Prince`s perfectly baked carrot cake, the votes were taken and the winner was announced as….  Sean Brown!

This is our Second to last week of the bake-off before the final and we cant wait to see how much we have been able to raise for Ashgate.

Week 4

Todays Bake off, we had Tillie, Dom and Jacob bringing in their submissions. It’s been amazing seeing the different departments getting involved in baking and taking part in raising money for Ashgate, This was the last week of the Bake-off before the finale and all 3 submissions were worthy winners but it was our youngest resident, Jacob who is through to the final round!

We also had the chance to vote for a winner over all from the last 3 weeks to join Jacob, Sean, Juliette and Tim in the finale and after putting it to a vote, the winner was…. Pip with her chocolate cake from round 1!

Well done to everyone who has participated over the last weeks! We are looking forward to seeing who the winner in the final winner’s

round of our MVIS style Bake off!

Finale

This week we have had our final round of the “Great MVIS Bake off”,  the previous winners were put to the test of doing a 12 piece traybake to determine the winner and we haven’t been disappointed! With all 5 entries we were lost for words with both the presentation and professionalism in their work that we were forced to cast a vote twice and still weren’t able to pick one to be the overall winner!

Each of the team brought in a completely unique piece which really radiates the team spirit here at MVIS, and the generosity of our staff for getting involved in this 5 week bake off all in the name of charity!

So we want to say a massive thank you to each member of the team who has gotten involved and a round of applause to all who have gotten to the final. This leads us to announce our winners of the 2021 “Great MVIS Bake off”….. Pip Wood and Tim Hill!

Team BartVIS Stand Out in Support of Youngminds

In support of World Mental Health Day, the team at MVIS and Bartco UK are saying #HelloYellow in support of the charity Youngminds to show young people they’re not alone with their mental health.

MVIS and Bartco UK take mental health very seriously. In the UK, suicide claims an alarming number of lives each year, with many of those in the Highways and Construction industries.

As safety is one of the core foundations at MVIS and Bartco UK, there is no denying the obligation we have in raising awareness of this to help make the industry safer for everyone.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men aged between 20 and 49, with three quarters of registered suicides in 2020 being among men, which has been the case since the mid-1990s.

We know that the Highways and Transport industries are heavy employers of men, so when research uncovers that 41% of men still don’t seek mental health support when they need it and that men are reaching burnout, something must be done to remedy this with more young men joining these ever increasing industries.

In support of #HelloYellow 2021, the MVIS and Bartco UK team donated money and wore hi-vis or yellow clothing in support of Youngmind’s #HelloYellow campaign, which encourages communities, businesses and schools to wear yellow for the day each year to raise awareness.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director and one of two Mental Health First Aiders for both MVIS and Bartco UK comments, “It’s clear to see just how important the work that Youngminds do is, so it with great pride that we are supporting them again this year with #HelloYellow. We are very happy to support this campaign not just for the fun we have in the office with it, but also because it’s so close to our hearts. It gives us a chance to raise awareness with our team and other’s in the industry to help to encourage people who are struggling to seek help.”

The Future of Construction Site Safety

Over the years, MVIS have cultivated a solid reputation in the industry for service, reliability and quality of products. Whilst working traditionally in traffic management applications, our technology can be applied to accomplish a wide range of goals in a work zone, from helping to enforce a site’s safety rules, to helping to reduce a work’s vehicle speed, our portable solar powered units offer solutions that could underpin the future of work zone safety.

VMS-A / VMS-C

Health and safety notices are important in general society but on a work site, they are vital and can often mean the difference between life and death. Our VMS-A and VMS-C are built for messaging, offering the ability to fit up to 4 lines of text per slide, they are ideal solutions to help communicate rules of a building site. Messages are displayed on a bright, low power consuming 5-colour LED display, making them ideal for text or pictograms.

This is especially important to help communicate these messages to non-English speaking workers and pedestrians, who sometimes rely on pictograms as a ‘universal safety language’.

Our signs are not only great for general messaging needs, but they are also ideal to help with many issues that could be present on-site.

For example, a common issue seen on some work sites is speeding vehicles.

Whether it’s workers arriving to the site, transporting equipment or materials between areas or if it has not been possible to segregate pedestrians sufficiently from the site, such as for some inner city building renovations for example, there is a spectrum of speed related risks on a building site.

Vehicles travelling faster than the set speed limit is exceptionally dangerous considering the risks involved in such an environment and the type of vehicles often found on a building site, which are often incredibly heavy plant or goods vehicles that can be difficult to control.

Using our VMS-A or VMS-C, you can help control site speed with a 2-pronged approach. Not only can our signs be used to display a speed roundel to remind drivers of the speed limit, but with their integrated speed activation sensor, the signs can also display a ‘SLOW DOWN’ message or something similar that is triggered by a driver exceeding the speed limit.

VMS-C

The VMS-A and C could even be used to track and measure success on this. All units contain a data collection radar that collects traffic flow data on trends in speed, time and date. Using this data, site managers can track speed trends, identify if and where there is a problem, and therefore take further steps to negate these issues.

There are few construction sites that wouldn’t benefit from increased surveillance. As the industry works hard to consistently improve standards of health and safety, increased surveillance is a potential route to help influence behaviour, monitor incidents and increase accountability in any work zone.

One of our latest innovations sees a CCTV camera integrated with a VMS-A, which offers a special surveillance / feedback solution that can be used to influence behaviour and communicate with drivers, pedestrians and workers, helping keep everyone confident in the knowledge that their actions are being monitored to ensure safety and the adherence to best practice.

There is also the obvious security benefits of having a portable CCTV VMS on-site. Thieves who may be looking to target contraction sites will likely think twice before trespassing after seeing such a visible warning that they are on CCTV. The portability of these units also offers site managers the option to have the sign relocated for increased security, preventing thieves from planning too much ahead of time.

HD Compact VMS

Traditionally used to communicate to drivers and pedestrians in urban areas, the solar powered HD Compact VMS is our smallest portable VMS unit and is ideal for construction sites where space is limited.

The HD Compact offers a highly portable and easy to update solution for managing the movement and behaviour of pedestrians and on-site employees.

The bright, red and white LED display boasts a 20mm pixel pitch and makes an impact anywhere. For construction sites, the smaller 2-colour HD Compact is a perfect choice for recording works traffic speed and volume, displaying text, pictograms and animated messages, just like the VMS-A and VMS-C.

Hidden cabling means this unit is secure from vandalism or accidental damage and also benefits from the data collection radar that is integrated in all of our signs.

In recent years, the HD Compact has been developed to better serve construction sites too, giving rise to the Overhead Service Unit.

The Overhead Service Unit is positioned in advance of overhead structures and services where work is being carried out. The unit was developed to further enhance site safety for the workforce by using editable text or pictograms to warn in advance of overhead obstructions.

Overhead Service Unit

Web Studio / BartcoLive App

All of our portable VMS units can be updated and monitored using a browser or mobile device.

Using Web Studio on browser or the BartcoLive App on a smartphone or mobile device, clients can display text, pictograms or recreate all sorts of images such as logos on our VMS-A, VMS-C and HD Compact.

Importance of Accreditations and Working Within Frameworks

MVIS Have always been dedicated to the principles of safety, quality and best practice. Underscored by our focus on training, our team are consistently training and looking for ways to improve on areas of skills levels and qualifications.

In the face of the global pandemic, we have been working hard in the background to ensure that we have the right accreditations to guide this dedication and focus, helping us to maintain our industry leading reputation in the rental supply of solar powered intelligent transport systems.

One of the motivations behind this is the understanding of the importance of accreditations to MVIS. Not only does it help us on our unending mission to improve, but holding the right accreditations are required to work with some of our biggest clients.

One of the most important of these is our ISO accreditations. MVIS hold ISO accreditations in quality (9001:2015), environmental management (14001:2015), and health & safety (45001:2018), issued by global certification body NQA and subject to annual audits.

ISO accreditations enforce the practise of and adherence to respected business standards that help organisations perform better in a wide range of aspects. Together, the ISO accreditations furnish us with a full IMS (integrated management system), bringing our systems and processes into one complete framework.

For MVIS and Bartco UK, the standards of quality (9001:2015)environmental management (14001:2015) and health & safety (45001:2018) are of vital importance to our business, making adherence to this framework a must.

One of the other accreditations we have earned recently is Gold Status with Constructionline, which offers a platform for thousands of buyers in the construction industry to quickly find suppliers amongst a pool of high quality members that they can engage with confidently.

Constructionline creates an ethos of trust and quality amongst its community by validating all members and achieving Gold status isn’t easy. Gold membership requires further validation checks using an enhanced prequalification questionnaire that goes beyond those involved in silver.

Our credentials were assessed for a wide range of aspects, including environmental management, quality management, equal opportunities, modern slavery act adherence and anti-bribery and corruption policies.

Working to the requirements Constructionline Gold Status demands ensures that we are working to the best standards possible in these areas, giving our customers confidence as well as helping to keep our team and the general public safe.

We have also achieved Gold status in the Supply Chain Sustainability School, a platform that offers businesses extensive and accredited training around various sustainability, offsite, digital, procurement, lean and management topics relevant to the business environment.

Achieving Gold status is done through completing or using a number of training workshops, networking events and e-learning modules across the company to ensure that the skills taught within the programmes are taken on by companies and filtered throughout the business.

The policies and systems affected by the work we have done with the Supply Chain Sustainability School will, in turn, affect the whole organisation by helping us towards our goal of a more sustainability focussed business, with the added benefits of cost savings, reinforcing our reputation and increased safety for our team, our customers and the general public.

This year, we have also re-certified again with Achilles BuildingConfidence registration, having been certified for over 2 years now.

Achilles Building Confidence is a UK construction industry accreditation and risk management scheme that aims to help organisations identify, assess, qualify, and monitor suppliers throughout the supply chain, reducing operating costs.

A standardised pre-qualification questionnaire streamlines the procurement process and manages risk. Achilles enables communities of buyers and suppliers to build better business relationships through a more open, trusting and proactive approach. Sharing knowledge, standards and best practice leads to buyers and suppliers sharing success.

Achilles BuildingConfidence helps us to accentuate our commitment to these essential aspects of our business.

As a responsible business operating in a modern world, our focus of attention also extends to digital. Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective, Government backed framework that helps us protect our organisation against a whole range of the most common cyber-attacks.

Working to this framework gives us peace of mind that our defences will protect against the vast majority of common cyber-attacks because these attacks are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place.

It also gives our customers confidence that their data is handled according to best practices against common cyber-attacks, meaning they can hire with us without concern.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director commented, “Accreditations change the way we operate at an organisational level that affects how we approach things, both as a company and as individuals. The frameworks we work to underpin a lot of what we do here at MVIS and Bartco UK and ensures that we are doing our best when it comes to aspects of safety, service and quality.”

Anne continues, “It assures our customers too. Earning the accreditations we have is testament to our commitment to our customers. Clients come to us knowing that we do not compromise on safety, quality or customer care and that we can adapt in an ever-changing world.”

Celebrating 2 years of Sean!

In order to progress and continue to provide MVIS customers with the highest quality products and services within the industry, the company always looks for ways it can develop.

Since MVIS’s establishment in 2012, an external marketing company was used to provide MVIS with marketing strategies and build the companies online reputation. At the time it was perfect for the size of the company,  however in recent years the product catalogue has expanded and the hire fleet was grown, meaning a more hands-on approach was needed to reach current and potential customer’s online and branch into a more modern approach of being an independent company.

In 2019 MVIS’s then general Manager, Anne Ashman, decided to move away from using an external marketing agency and bring a new department into the rapidly growing company. Feeling the need to have someone internal portraying the company out to the market that knew MVIS inside out, she felt this could only ever be achieved by working within the organisation.

This led to the formation of the Marketing Department and employing Sean Brown as the Marketing Manager. With 8 years of experience in marketing, Sean was the perfect candidate to update and rebrand the external presence of MVIS, in his two years the company has seen a complete update of the marketing strategy, working closely with Anne and working in areas that an agency couldn’t have done, especially through the pandemic where a keen eye for adaptability whilst retaining sustainability was needed.

Taking on this role was going to be a large task for anybody. Sean’s vast knowledge in website design and SEO, let him easily take control of services that had previously been outsourced which meant that there was full engagement with current, new and potential clients in the fast-moving industry’s the company works in.

Sean`s tasks do not just include the upkeep of the marketing strategies but also include the training of his team, Tillie and  Ben. These last few years, Sean has passed on his knowledge and provided training sessions to them both.

Tillie said “Sean is amazing to work with; he likes to ensure that everything is done to the highest standard, implementing this in the marketing department has made Ben and I conscious of the work we do and the importance of a strong marketing department.”

Anne Ashman Commercial & Operations Director said “We want to say a big thank you for the effort that Sean has put into building the companies branding and reputation over the last two years, especially during the Covid pandemic, with daily changes coming from the government in 2020.  Every member of our team here at MVIS are what makes us stand out from the rest as we understand the importance of a strong, reliable task force when it comes to providing the UK with the highest quality products and solutions in the Intelligent Transport Business”.

MVIS Supports The 2021 Sparkle Walk

It’s been another difficult year so far for charities who, for the first quarter at least, were still dealing with the impacts that social distancing was having on their ability to organise fundraisers.

During this difficult year, MVIS and Bartco UK have been supporting Ashgate Hospicecare with a range of fundraisers organised by ourselves as well offering our signs to help them promote events and important messages to the local area.

In recent months, as the UK has reopened again, fund raising events are back better than ever! The most recent event held by Ashgate was the annual 2021 Sparkle Walk, that saw 1500 people take to the streets of Chesterfield and walk in support of Ashgate. Whilst the amount raised is yet to be determined, it is sure to be substantial.

Our original 5-colour Bartco VMS-A has been of particular benefit to Ashgate Hospicecare, who have used several units to help promote events to the public throughout the year. However, with the Sparkle Walk, it’s different. Due to the scale of the annual Sparkle Walk, several main roads around the area are required to close.

4 of our VMS-A units were deployed 1 week prior to and during the road closures to give drivers warning, which due to how central these roads are to the local area, was an important thing to do.

Doing this offered a safer and potentially a more effective traffic control method due to our VMS-A’s LED lights and adjustable display mast, meaning it can be positioned perfectly for maximum exposure.

So far this year, the value of support MVIS has provided Ashgate Hospicecare through our signs has been £8,071 including delivery!

As Christmas approaches, we are working on exciting fundraising ideas that will contribute to the figure we have raised so far this year, adding to the Bake Off we will be concluding soon as well as the Car boot sale and the 17 mile High Peak Trail Walk completed by our UK Group Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman earlier in the year.
