MVIS takes on PRINCE2

As a company, we are always looking for ways to improve our team’s qualifications and experience. Leading the company through this refreshing take on upskilling team members, Anne Ashman herself sets a fantastic example when it comes to career development.

On top of managing the role as UK Group Commercial and Operations Director, we are proud to shine a spotlight on Anne, having recently achieved her PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner certification.

This course certifies Anne to employ the correct skills needed when it comes to project management, an important aspect for many of our highest profile customers such as Highways England and Tier 1 contractors.

However, such an approach helps to reinforce the MVIS Platinum Service Promise on all projects, no matter how big or small, allowing us to offer top level service to all our customers, helping to keep Britain’s roads moving in safe way.

Having worked with MVIS for nearly 10 years, Anne has solid experience when it comes to managing a successful team, which has meant that we have been able to evolve and continue to grow within the industry. PRINCE2 equips Anne with the extended skills important to help the MVIS/ Bartco UK group further evolve within the competitive industry that we operate in.

Anne’s quick thinking and problem-solving skills already equips her with the ability to generate new ideas to help solve problems. Along with her qualifications, experience and organisation skills, Anne is adept in applying the best solution for any problem that utilises every aspect of the MVIS and Bartco UK machine to it’s maximum potential.

The emphasis that Anne places on training and development applies not just to herself but is enthusiastically extended to the whole team, with Anne serving as a great example of what can be achieved when the importance of training is stressed.

Anne comments, “I’m never one to shy away from an opportunity to develop my skills, so when the need to certify as a PRINCE2 practitioner arose, I relished the challenge. In taking the course, I began to fully appreciate the place these project management skills can take within the company and we are now working on developing standard operating procedures and processes to offer an environment that better supports PRINCE2.”

Spotlight: HD Compact VMS V.2

Back in June last year, MVIS and Bartco UK were proud to announce the latest version of our revolutionary HD Compact VMS.

V.2 of this unit marked a development on an already ground-breaking advancement in the VMS market.

V.1 of the HD Compact was the first of its kind, offering a light-weight, portable variable message sign designed for use within work zones to improve safety and communicate information. Featuring a dual colour (red and white) display, this VMS can be updated remotely via our web-based portal or mobile app and boasts up to a 4-week run time.

V.2 builds on everything that makes the V.1 brilliant, offering added developments that usher in new and exciting uses of the HD Compact unit. One of the biggest developments to have been seen is the use of solar power, offering highly extended maintenance free run-time and representing a significant upgrade on the V.1.

Another development in the V.2 is the addition of adjustable height for its display, allowing for greater customisation for the application it is being used for. It also features a new casing design that hides all cabling, making it more secure against vandalism or accidental damage.

The new version of this unit also still benefits from the data collection radar integrated in all our signs. This makes our VMS a low-cost alternative to many data collection solutions on the market, offering a data source for the analysis of traffic trends and enabling greater intelligence for planning projects of all kinds.

These developments bring the HD Compact in line with our other solar powered signs, allowing us to offer a fully solar powered VMS range in different sizes.

Along with the V.2 of our HD Compact, we have also been working on a new trailer which allows us to be more efficient in deploying these units, transporting up to 6 in one journey.

Developed with Edwards Trailers, this trailer moves us closer to our Corporate Social Responsibility goal for a cleaner, more environmentally friendly delivery model. It also offers our drivers a more efficient and safer delivery tool, helping to cut down on journeys in a post-COVID-19 world.

MVIS Recertify Another Year on Achilles Audit

Back in 2019, we were proud to announce that we had been awarded with Achilles BuildingConfidence membership, and in the following years, we have been recertified at our annual audits with this year being no exception.

Achilles Building Confidence is a UK construction industry accreditation and risk management scheme that aims to help organisations identify, assess, qualify, and monitor suppliers throughout the supply chain, reducing operating costs.

A standardised pre-qualification questionnaire streamlines the procurement process and manages risk.

Achilles enables communities of buyers and suppliers to build better business relationships through a more open, trusting and proactive approach. Sharing knowledge, standards and best practice leads to buyers and suppliers sharing success.

For us, Achilles membership cemented our commitment to both quality and safety, building on the work we already do in line with our other memberships such as FORS Bronze, Constructionline Gold and our ISO accreditations in quality (9001:2015), environmental management (14001:2015), and health & safety (45001:2018), together furnishing us with a full IMS (integrated management system), integrating our systems and processes into one complete framework.

Having Achilles BuildingConfidence membership alongside our other accreditations underscores just how serious we are about our commitment to these essential aspects of our business. Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director commented, “We are really proud to have been recertified yet again with Achilles. We first signed up to help demonstrate to our current and potential customers that we prioritise Quality, H&S and Environmental focused manner.”

Anne continues, “Still retaining our Achilles membership 3 years after we registered is a real testament to the fact that we practice what we preach when it comes to standards and safety.”

Our Achilles BuildingConfidence membership takes its place next to the multitude of reasons to choose MVIS, that not only backs up our commitment to these areas, but it also sets us apart from a typical ITS supplier.

With award winning customer service, national coverage and a portfolio containing some of the highest profile projects in the UK, it is little wonder why MVIS boast the most experienced and best trained workforce in the industry. We ensure that our workforce is given the skills and hands-on training to deliver nothing short of excellence, meaning that is what you can expect from us.

MVIS Staff Achievements

Here at MVIS and Bartco UK we always take pride in our incredibly talented team. When it comes to staff development, we appreciate the devotion that the team put into their own careers and company progression. We are proud to say that this week we have had 3 members of the team excel in further training and pass qualifications that help the company keep its reputation of excellent customer service.

Liam Griffiths joined us in 2019 as a Workshop technician. His ability to build and fix units was apparent from day one, he soon became capable of managing his workload.  Liam`s strong work ethic saw him redirected to the delivery and maintenance team this year. With Liam settling into his role as part of the delivery team, we wanted to further enhance his attributions to the company by enrolling him in a 4 ½ day towing course.

This course not only provides a faster, more efficient service to our customers but to also reduces the quantity of trips in the vehicles by delivering multiple signs in one journey – yet another contribution from the company in reducing our carbon footprint. Liam is now fully qualified to tow out portable units UK-wide, this being a perfect example of how the team goes above and beyond to fulfill the customer’s demands daily.

Another member of the team who has recently developed in her career is Pip Wood. Pip undertook the International Trade Operations & Procedures (ITOPS) course. This course provides training and knowledge on operating administrational procedures in an international trade environment.  Since joining the companies Pip has achieved her first-year apprenticeship and has since begun her second apprenticeship course to expand her professional development.

Finally, UK group Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman has achieved her PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner certification. This course is to offer the correct skills needed when it comes to project management. Working with MVIS for 10 years, Anne’s extensive experience when it comes to managing a successful team has meant that we have been able to evolve and continue to grow within the industry. This course is to provide Anne with the extended skills which are needed to help MVIS/ Bartco UK further evolve within the competitive industry that we strive in.

Staff commitment is something we have found to be vital and we encourage the team to strive for the highest achievements that they can master, to continue to provide the award-winning service and genuine 5  colour portable VMS and Intelligent Transport Systems that we have become known for within the industry.

Celebrating 8/9 Years- Graeme Lee and Dom Bridge

This month we are celebrating the anniversary of two of our longest serving members of the team, Graeme Lee and Dom Bridge. With over 24 years of experience in the industry between them both, we are proud to boast of our award-winning customer service and keen eye for detail within the fast-paced business which we operate in.

Joining the team in 2012, Graeme’s knowledge and experience in sales quickly saw him forming relationships with clients and has continued to maintain and develop these through his last 9 years with us here at MVIS. Understanding the importance of customer service, quality trading and value in company to client relationships, Graeme’s loyalty and dedication to the company has led him to ultimately being promoted to our Sales Director, and is now overseeing our ever growing sales department, as we see MVIS grow and expand.

Next, we have Dom Bridge. Beginning his career here at MVIS as an admin apprentice and joining our first apprenticeship scheme, Dom began to grow and develop his career ambitions. This has led him to achieve his Chartered Manager level 5 qualification, after 6 years of applying himself to both job and multiple courses. Dom was promoted to Operations Manager in 2020. This promotion being well deserved, Dom`s advanced understanding of the industry and commitment to his own personal growth, as well as that of the company, is something that we are incredibly proud of here at MVIS.

MVIS would like to say a big `Thank you` to our incredible team, and an even bigger thank you to Graeme and Dom for their devotion to us over the years, as we understand that we are only as good as each individual which is behind us, and we are incredibly lucky to have our remarkable team at the heart of MVIS.

Web Studio – Industry Leading VMS Control Software

For many years now, MVIS and Bartco have been associated with practical, effective and reliable portable solar powered ITS safety solutions.

Offering the first 5-colour VMS to the UK market, the Bartco brand is well known for launching innovations. One of the big areas we have been receiving consistent enthusiasm for over the years has been our Variable Message Sign (VMS) management software, Web Studio.

Web Studio is certainly an industry leading management software, offering many time saving, convenient and simple features, as well as things that competing systems don’t.

At its core, Web Studio is a VMS management tool that allows users of our signs to change and update messaging remotely. Allowing you to produce text or pictograms, your chosen messages can be created, saved to a library and then scheduled or shared across multiple signs if needed, making it even easier to manage messaging in large projects and to push out messages quickly.

The sophisticated package also saves travel time and costs by enabling the instant communication from most internet enabled devices. Unlike some other systems which require local installation, Web Studio can be operated from a web browser, meaning signs can be updated quickly and easily without needing to install the program to your device, making it ideal for temporary applications.

Users can also view a map of their signs and zoom in, observe and adjust any number of signs in line with developments on the ground. This feature also helps allow quick identification and easy monitoring of assets, which is ideal for sign purchases, as well as route planning for in-house maintenance. Web Studio even offers an auto-routing option linked to Google Maps, routing you to the chosen unit quickly and easily.

Using Web Studio, clients can keep a close eye not just on their unit’s location, but also their status and past use as it also relays battery voltages, program history and its connection strength to the system.

For security concerns, Web Studio also offers logins at levels, allowing you to set up account restrictions so only certain members of the team have access to specific permissions. With live signs out in public, this is an important feature for many clients.

For on-the-go changes, signs can be updated using the BartcoLive app, which offers everything that Web Studio offers, but designed for smartphones and other mobile devices. With the BartcoLive app, wherever you are and at any time, you can control the messages displayed on any of your portable VMS with greater speed and flexibility.

Web Studio and BartcoLive also allow for the activation and general management of some of the wider functionality of our signs. For example, integrated in all of our VMS units is a data collection radar that can be used to collect traffic data. Web Studio allows for the download and management of this data as well as the ability to enable our sign’s speed activation functionality, which displays a specific message upon being triggered by a vehicle driving above a certain speed.

For more information about Web Studio, BartcoLive or our portable VMS range, please contact us via our contact form.

Inhouse development- Cain Gregory

Here at MVIS and Bartco UK, we have spent 9 years building and devoting ourselves to not only being the UK`s #1 producer and distributor of VMS units, but we have also spent countless hours in training and developing young people’s abilities when it comes to working within a competitive industry.

We have had 9 staff members join us at an apprentice level, and a further 8 of these continued with us after the completion of their apprentices. Not only do we offer apprenticeship programs, but we also hold work experience places yearly as part of our corporate social responsibility.  Being able to offer jobs and chances to the next generation is how we feel we have been able to strive within the industry and bring new fresh ideas to the table, such as our first-of-its-kind Genuine HD Quattro Unit. Designed and developed here in the UK.

One of our team who has continued to strive with us is our very own, Cain Gregory. Joining us in 2016 for a week of work experience, Cain showed us how he was able to excel within our industry, and our then general manager, Anne Ashman was so impressed with his quick learning and positive approach to working within our fast-paced industry that she offered him a permanent place on our apprenticeship program for the following year.

Being with us for the past 4 years, Cain has achieved multiple certificates and qualifications, his determination to learn and focus is something that we are incredibly proud of. This work ethic has just seen him completing his apprenticeship and has since approached his line manager and requested further courses and qualifications in order to yet again improve himself and his career to greater ability.

Cain is now working towards the completion of a CAD qualification and a Supervisor course. This attitude has seen Cain being awarded the Employee of the month certification, nominated by our UK Group Commercial and Operations Manager, thanking him for stepping up during Covid and taking on the workload of some of our other team members who were in isolation, all alongside completing his apprenticeship.

Cain has shown himself time and time again to be an integral part of our award-winning team, and we could not be prouder to have him continue with us now that his apprenticeship is complete! A big congratulations to Cain for all of his hard work and determination over the last 4 years, and we can’t wait to see what the future has install for such a positive, hard-working individual!

Original 5 Colour VMS

Here at MVIS, we have 9 years of experience when it comes to customer satisfaction and VMS design, which has helped lead the path for us being one of the UK`s number 1 distributors of portable LED units. With highly trained staff on hand who have experience in VMS content design, we can create custom messaging, from alerts to pictograms and everything in between.

Being able to offer 5 colours on our portable VMS units and two colours on our HD Compacts, our units can be programed, so we are able to offer a highly versatile solution to catch the attention of the public, both for onsite and pubic access areas.

Our VMS units are perfect for high speed areas such as motorway works and road closures. Displaying not only wording but also pictograms means that language barriers can be tackled with simple imagery, uploaded in seconds via our mobile and web based systems by us or you as the customer.

Being highly versatile means that our units are multifunctional and are perfect when it comes to displaying messaging and updates to the public in situations such as festivals or markets. Our online gallery shows the broad range of uses that our units have been used for and especially during the last year of Covid 19, councils have been able to take full advantage of the striking displays we can offer and have used them continuously to provide quick updates and information to the general public at a time where knowledge was our most important tool at tackling the last years uncertainty.

FORS Accreditation serves as another benchmark for quality

Companies achieving FORS accreditation are adding a mark of excellence to its operations.

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme for fleet operators which aims to
raise the level of quality within fleet operations, and to demonstrate which operators are achieving exemplary levels of best practice in safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.

MVIS now joins this exemplary collection of businesses, operating its fleet to this benchmarked standard of excellence, achieving the FORS Bronze accreditation.

Indicators of quality aren’t a new thing to MVIS, as the company already holds a number of highly regarded accreditations such as Environmental Management, BS EN ISO 14001: 2015, Quality, BS EN ISO 9001:2015, and Health & Safety, BS EN ISO 45001: 2018, as well as Achilles Building Confidence accreditation, Constructionline Gold and most recently, Cyber Essentials, showcasing the company’s approach to digital security for it’s customers.

FORS Bronze

According to FORS…

“Bronze accreditation confirms that you employ good practice and comply with the requirements laid out by the FORS Standard. This includes demonstrating dedication to driver and vehicle safety, combined with improving operating practices through effective monitoring of fuel and tyre usage.”

UK Group Commercial and Operations Director Anne Ashman told us:

“Achieving industry standard stamps of quality such as ISO, Achilles, Constructionline and now FORS is extremely important to us as a business, as it gives our customers no doubt about the levels of quality and service they are going to receive.

“Becoming a FORS member demonstrates to our customers and supply chain that we are committed to exceeding industry standards. This won’t be where that stops, and we will continue to look at ways which we can improve across the business.”

Promotion from within – Tom Hooton

Promoting from within is something that we are proud to boast of here at MVIS and Bartco UK. Understanding that our team is at the forefront of our fast-growing business, we are always looking for ways that we can offer personal and professional development to all our incredible staff members.

With this being said, we are proud to announce that our former Technical Development Supervisor, Tom Hooton, has been promoted to Research and Development Manager!

Joining us in 2014, Tom has not only grown within the company but has also been instrumental in groundbreaking changes. Whether it’s developing new solutions, such as our Original Bartco HD Compact unit, or finding ways of improving our Intelligent Transport Units and integrations with our warehouse team, we know that Tom is always at hand to pass on his knowledge and experience to any department, having time and appreciation for all of his co-workers.

Tom began his journey with us as Technical Support and has continuously developed within his role over the past 7 years. Seeing this new promotion as a way of further investment in his career, Tom has taken on a level 5 apprenticeship in management to see himself excel in this new managerial role. His initiative, determination and ability to think outside of the box has seen Tom develop his knowledge in using CAD software and with this has developed new, bespoke solutions like our most recent solutions, the Works Egress, soon to be available for hire through our MVIS Ltd.

Holding his on-site cards such as his CSCS and Highways England Passport, Tom has a hands-on approach when it comes to understanding all of our units and this means that he has been able to improve and develop some of our technically advanced solutions with Bartco UK, with an example being our highly versatile SIP unit.

Over the past year, Covid-19 has not stopped Tom and the rest of the team from going above and beyond to provide the best for our customers. Back in June 2020, we were able to announce our latest version of the HD Compact VMS Unit which offers added developments such as solar power and a new highly extended maintenance-free run-time. This project was overseen by Tom and the Technical department.

After speaking with Tom about his new job role, he stated “I am very grateful for the opportunity and am looking forward to the challenge that It will bring. I also appreciate the trust that has been put in me as this company has been so good to me, putting trust and giving me opportunities that I will forever be grateful for. This is my proudest achievement to date in my career and I can’t wait to prove myself for the role.”

Being with us for 7 years shows Tom’s dedication to his role here at Bartco UK. Monitoring the market for the newest innovations and being able to develop them into bigger, better solutions means that our team can live up to our reputation.

Anne Ashman said “We are proud to have such a highly driven team here at MVIS and Bartco UK and would like to say a big congratulations on his new role and Thankyou to Tom for his dedication and hard work over the past 7 years! “

MVIS continue to Support Ashgate

Here at MVIS, we are lucky enough to be able to show our support to others in the community and be able to spread positivity through sponsorship. Not only do we show our support within our community by sponsoring locally run clubs such as Matlock Town Football Club, recently we have been trying to support a charity which through this pandemic has suffered more than most, Ashgate Hospice.

Ashgate Hospice Care is a charity that provides compassionate, specialist palliative and end of life care, free of charge, to patients with a life-limiting illness and their families across North Derbyshire.

Despite the high pressures of the last year, Ashgate looked after over 1,680 patients at home, 414 patients on their ward and supported 476 bereaved family members.

This is why we are determined to support Ashgate and what they do for the community and so have held fundraising activities and spread awareness by offering free Original 5 colour VMS units and taking on challenges as a team.

Our latest fundraising activity was undertaken by our UK Group Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman who completed a high peak trail walk of 17 miles on Saturday 10th July. Anne took on this walk as she is currently training to do a 75 mile walk in 3 days to raise money for 3 charities close to her heart. Being the perfect opportunity to get some training in and raise awareness and funds for Ashgate, she completed the 17 miles in 4 hours and raised £220.

After speaking with Anne she said “Being able to take on this challenge and offer support to such a worthy charity is something that I love to be apart of. Recently we have been getting involved with more charitable work such as our carboot sale, where we raised over £300  and we are currently planning on hosting a cake and coffee event for Ashgate. We have always done what we can to give back to the community and will continue to show our support when we are able to.”

As a company, we wanted to congratulate Anne on her fantastic achievement that she not only shares with Ashgate Hospice care, but also every person in the area who comes to rely on their services.

Cross Departmental Training Succeeds Again

Towards the end of May this year, we published a post highlighting one of our training policies that has seen a lot of success in recent months.

We mentioned in May:

“Over the years, MVIS and Bartco UK have always prioritised training and staff development. We do this for a number of a reasons, least of not which is to ensure our team’s ability to do their job is second to none, leaving us with the best trained workforce in the industry.

Part of this is our policy to provide staff with cross-departmental training in the form of a ‘day in the life’ of other team members to make sure that each employee appreciates that everyone is valuable. Such a policy also allows the team to have an insight into just what it takes to make things happen in other departments, and the role their part plays in relation to other people’s jobs.”

Since then, we have had a number of team members go through this training so that staff from all departments have a strong insight into the inner workings of other departments.

This method of training has been a proven success for us in the past and is often used for employees who have just started with us. This has the added benefit of giving these team members a deeper insight into the whole organisation and the way we work rather than just their own department.

However, over the past 18 months, there have been some significant changes to the way we all work due to COVID, requiring us to take another look at everyone’s training and understanding of each other’s roles so that the team can gain an appreciation for the new ways we have all had to change.

This time for the training it was the Bartco UK team, who are split between the workshop staff and the office staff, both having seen huge changes to the way they work during the pandemic, calling for a renewed understanding of each other’s roles.

Tim Hill, Workshop Supervisor for Bartco UK commented, “In the workshop, we have seen huge changes to the way we do our jobs during COVID, and now I fully appreciate just how much everyone else’s jobs have had to change. It’s been great not just for me, but for the whole workshop team to see how things are done in different departments and how everyone’s roles work together to keep things running smoothly.”

Pip Wood, Purchasing and Stock Control for Bartco UK added, “Swapping roles with the workshop department was highly insightful, learning where the stock items I pick are placed and used in our trailers as really heightened my knowledge. I appreciate what they do as a job more and I feel that this was a great team-building exercise, making our relationship at work even stronger.”
