Enhancing Roadside Safety at Schools with MVIS HD Compact

Every school day, the dangers posed by speeding vehicles near schools become more evident—especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up rush. With parents and commuters in a hurry, ensuring the safety of children at the roadside is becoming increasingly challenging.

While most school zones are set at a 20mph speed limit, compliance remains a significant issue. Studies show that in some areas, a quarter of vehicles exceed 30mph, and nearly 10% travel over 35mph during critical times.

Why Are Drivers Speeding?

Alarmingly, more than a quarter of drivers admit they are unaware of speed limits outside their children’s schools, and one in five knowingly exceeds the limit. This is a serious concern, as reduced speeds can lower the risk of accidents by 40%. The charity Brake highlights that excess speed is a factor in around a quarter of fatal crashes, emphasising the urgent need for speed control around schools.

Beyond Traditional Traffic Calming Measures

To enhance roadside safety, councils often implement speed bumps and road layout changes. However, these measures are not always enough to curb speeding. So, what’s the next step?

MVIS HD Compact – A Proven Solution

MVIS offers a highly effective solution: Radar-activated Variable Message Signs (VMS), such as the HD Compact. This small yet powerful unit provides an unmistakable visual reminder of speed limits.

  • Highly Visible: When a flashing 20mph roundel appears on a radar-activated VMS, drivers take notice.
  • Compact & Non-Intrusive: With its small footprint, it fits easily onto pavements without obstructing pedestrians.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Solar-powered and carbon-neutral, it’s a sustainable solution that aligns with environmental goals.
  • Reliable & Easy to Deploy: The MVIS team handles delivery and installation seamlessly, ensuring minimal disruption to school operations.

Enhancing Site Security: MVIS’ New CCTV System in Collaboration with Chellan Highways

For over 13 years, MVIS has been at the forefront of the CCTV industry, providing innovative solutions to help customers monitor and secure their sites. As part of the THL Group, our Research and Development team is committed to pushing boundaries, collaborating with industry leaders, and delivering next-generation CCTV Systems.

MVIS CCTV System

The Risks of an Unmonitored Worksite

An unmonitored site is vulnerable to numerous risks, including financial loss, security threats, and operational inefficiencies. Without a reliable CCTV system from MVIS, your site could be exposed to:

  • Crime – Unsecured sites are prime targets for trespassers, vandals, and thieves. Construction sites alone lose an estimated £800 million annually due to equipment theft.
  • Lack of Deterrence – Visible CCTV acts as a strong deterrent to potential criminals. Without it, your site may be perceived as an easy target.
  • Limited Incident Monitoring & Response – Real-time CCTV monitoring enables quick responses to security breaches and safety incidents. Without it, issues may go unnoticed until it’s too late.
  • Reduced Investigative Evidence – In the event of a crime or accident, CCTV footage provides crucial evidence for investigations and legal proceedings.
  • Compromised Safety – CCTV enhances the safety of employees and visitors by monitoring key areas such as entrances, public zones, and high-security locations.
  • Weakened Access Control – CCTV works alongside other security measures to verify and control site access effectively.
  • Insurance Implications – Many insurance policies require or strongly recommend CCTV systems. Not having one could impact coverage or premiums.

The MVIS Advantage: Portable, Carbon-Neutral, and Space-Efficient

MVIS’ CCTV solutions offer a portable, carbon-neutral system with a compact footprint, making them ideal for any worksite. If one location isn’t yielding optimal coverage, the system can easily be relocated without causing space issues.

Your Trusted Partner: From Quarry to Roadside with MVIS Variable Message Signs (VMS)

Ensuring England’s Road network remains thriving and safe begins far from the roadside—it starts in the heart of the quarry. Quarries serve as the birthplace of both stone and asphalt, the essential materials that form the foundation and surface of our highways. Stone forms the sturdy base upon which all roads are built, providing the necessary strength and stability, while asphalt creates the smooth, durable layer we drive on. Although only a limited number of quarries produce asphalt, every quarry plays a vital role in supplying the stone critical to road construction. From raw material extraction to the final application, MVIS Variable Message Signs (VMS) support every step of this journey, ensuring safety, efficiency, and seamless operations from quarry sites to roadsides.

The Role of Quarries in Road Construction

Quarries are where the journey of asphalt begins. Here, raw materials are extracted, processed, and transported to be transformed into the smooth, durable roads millions rely on daily. During these operations, MVIS VMS & ITS Products play a key role in ensuring safety and communication. From alerting visitors and staff about loud noises and moving vehicles to directing traffic efficiently within the quarry, MVIS VMS are indispensable tools in managing the bustling activity of these sites.

Streamlining Quarry Operations

MVIS VMS are designed to optimise operations in quarries by providing real-time updates and safety messages to workers and drivers. By reducing congestion, these systems help direct traffic and improve the flow of materials. This not only enhances safety but also increases efficiency, allowing quarries to process and transport asphalt & stone faster, ensuring timely delivery to construction sites.

Whether it’s guiding drivers to weigh stations, cleaning bays, or directing them along designated routes, MVIS VMS ensure that every step is well-coordinated. These signs are programmed to reduce confusion and improve navigation, minimising delays and the risk of accidents. By integrating CCTV and VASS (Vehicle Activated Speed Signs) with ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) for speed monitoring, MVIS takes site safety to the next level. The CCTV systems provide a watchful eye on site activity, while the ANPR technology reads vehicle speeds, helping to identify and slow down road users, ensuring a safer and more efficient environment.

Supporting Asphalt’s Journey to the Road

Once asphalt is ready for transport, MVIS VMS continue to play a pivotal role. Positioned at loading bays and along transit routes, these signs facilitate seamless movement of materials from quarries to construction sites. By providing up-to-date traffic information, journey times, and safety alerts, MVIS VMS help ensure the efficient and secure transportation of asphalt.

At construction sites, where asphalt is laid on to the stone base and transformed into roads, we use daily, MVIS VMS provide critical safety support. Roadworkers can focus on their tasks, assured that drivers are being alerted to slow down and exercise caution. Messages like “SLOW DOWN,” “BE CAUTIOUS,” or “ROADWORKS AHEAD,” programmed through MVIS’ intuitive WebStudio platform, can be tailored to specific needs, ensuring optimal safety.

Adaptable, Reliable, and Easy to Use

MVIS products are built for versatility and durability. Whether in the dusty, rugged environment of a quarry or alongside busy roadworks, their trailer-based VMS solutions are designed to perform. These units are easy to tow and position, making them accessible even in challenging locations. Training is provided to ensure safe operation, from moving the units to programming them for site-specific requirements.

With messages customisable in seconds via WebStudio, MVIS VMS eliminate the need for multiple signs, delivering multiple messages on one unit. This adaptability makes them invaluable across the quarry and highways sectors, addressing site challenges with efficiency and ease.

A Dependable Partner for Safety and Efficiency

MVIS VMS are more than just signs—they are partners in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and success of operations, from quarry sites to construction zones. By streamlining communications, enhancing safety, and supporting operations at every stage, MVIS helps quarries and road networks thrive.

Whether it’s in the extraction phase or during road construction, MVIS VMS ensure that England’s roads are built and maintained with precision and care. From the quarry to the roadside, MVIS remains your trusted partner every step of the way.

MVIS Joins Ashgate Hospice for the Ashgate TreeCycle

At MVIS, we are committed to supporting our community and promoting sustainability. This January, we proudly partnered with Ashgate Hospice for their annual Treecycle initiative. Marketing Executive Ben Ashman and Delivery Technician Adam Brown spent an inspiring day assisting Ashgate in collecting Christmas trees from residents, contributing to this innovative and eco-friendly recycling effort.

Our Ongoing Partnership with Ashgate Hospice

MVIS has a long-standing history of supporting Ashgate Hospice through various initiatives. Over the years, we have volunteered for numerous activities, including hosting movie nights, organising car boot sales, participating in the Treecycle program, and providing sponsorships for Ashgate’s key events. These efforts not only help raise vital funds for the hospice but also strengthen our bond with the local community. We take pride in contributing to Ashgate’s mission and helping them deliver exceptional care and support to those in need.

What Is Treecycle?

Treecycle is a fantastic initiative organised  by Ashgate Hospice. Residents sign up to have their Christmas trees collected after the festive season by donating £15 to the hospice. This donation not only supports the incredible work of Ashgate but also ensures the trees are put to good use. Once collected, the trees are processed into biomass fuel—a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for tree disposal.

How Does It Work?

Participants register their trees with Ashgate Hospice, and a dedicated team of volunteers, including Ben and Adam, collect them. These trees are then processed into biomass fuel, a renewable energy source that captures the carbon stored in the trees, preventing harmful gases from being released into the atmosphere. This year, over 1,000 trees were collected, showcasing the incredible support from the community.

Why Biomass Fuel?

Christmas trees, like all plants, absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis as they grow, helping to improve air quality. However, when trees are discarded and begin to decompose, they release carbon dioxide and trace amounts of methane—a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. By converting these trees into biomass fuel, we prevent these emissions from entering the atmosphere while creating a valuable source of renewable energy.

A Day of Giving Back

Ben Ashman and Adam Brown were delighted to be part of this meaningful project. Guided by a collection list from Ashgate Hospice, they spent the day visiting homes, picking up trees, and connecting with members of the local community. Their efforts, combined with those of Ashgate’s dedicated volunteers, ensured a smooth and efficient collection process, contributing to a greener and more sustainable outcome for the festive season.

Making an Impact Together

The Ashgate Treecycle initiative is a shining example of how small actions can create a significant impact. By participating in Treecycle, residents not only supported vital hospice care services but also championed sustainable practices. We are incredibly proud to have been part of this impactful day and to help raise awareness about renewable energy and eco-friendly solutions.

At MVIS, we remain dedicated to projects that align with our core values of community engagement and environmental responsibility. A heartfelt thank-you to Ashgate Hospice for allowing us to be part of this year’s Treecycle and to everyone who contributed to its success. Together, we’re making a difference—one tree at a time.

Helping the homeless at Christmas with these core values in mind

Why Pathways of Chesterfield?

Why have MVIS dedicated their attention to the homeless of Chesterfield? It’s simple.

After one weekend in early November. Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman came into the marketing department after going shopping to Chesterfield and seeing the amount of unfortunate people without homes, she decided to send out an e-mail about helping the homeless at Christmas and what is needed and asked people to come in and donate their clothing.

How Has MVIS Helped?

On the 11th of December Marketing Executive, Ben Ashman, and Workshop Supervisor, Liam Griffiths, visited the team at Pathways of Chesterfield to deliver clothing collected over the beginning of December, Helping the homeless at Christmas.

Our dedicated team collected over 6 large bags of clothing and food for the charity from dedicated team members, this will go a long way to help the charity disperse the food and clothing to people in their community.

The team at MVIS believe it is important to give at times like Christmas when we have so much, and other people have so little. This is why we consistently help charities in their pursuit of helping people who need their services whether it be the end-of-life service at Ashgate Hospice or donating food to the Clay Cross Food Bank.

What really separates the best from the rest?

With over a decade of experience operating on the UK’s high-speed road network, we have proven our quality and capability for high-speed roadworks. Quality is an area where a business really has to practice what we preach, and we consistently step up to the plate and deliver in our field.
