ITS Leaders unite to launch road maintenance safety first

Two leading players in the intelligent transport system (ITS) industry have joined forces to create the first temporary road maintenance safety solutions to combine industry-leading modular electronic perimeters and variable message signs (VMS), providing a cost-efficient method of improving the safety of both road workers and road users.

Leading temporary ITS solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), in partnership with the creator of the Intellicone temporary work zone safety system, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), launched multiple solutions at an event facilitated by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) at Bruntingthorpe Airfield yesterday (16th September 2014).

The innovations launched yesterday included the Safelane automated traffic management system and the Multisafe Smart VMS.

The Multisafe Smart VMS combines Intellicone contactless sensor technology with MVIS’ range of VMS. Intellicone’s Sentry sensor can be positioned to detect vehicles or personnel and to activate wirelessly the appropriate high visibility VMS message. The resulting solution can be used for over-height vehicle detection, dynamic work exit messaging and to detect speeding vehicles.

The works exit system was developed in close cooperation with Costain and TRL. The solution is currently undergoing trials during the installation of the smart motorway scheme between junctions 28 and 31 of the M1. The exit system detects when works traffic is vacating the work zone, triggering a high impact message on an Intellicone Sentry VMS from the Multisafe Smart VMS product group to alert oncoming road users.

The Safelane automated traffic management system combines Intellicone products with MVIS’ Multisafe Smart VMS to facilitate safer work zone traffic management by fewer personnel. Intellicone cone barriers and contactless sensors, paired with CCTV, enable Multisafe Smart VMS to help undertake work zone protection, as such avoiding the need to deploy high numbers of operatives in these dangerous areas. Any worksite breaches instantly alert the remaining traffic management operatives and workforce, whilst capturing live footage of errant vehicles. The Safelane system is highly modular, can be applied to most road closures and is expected to help achieve major cost savings for the industry.

Said MVIS managing director, Pat Musgrave: “The temporary MVIS/Intellicone road maintenance worker protection solutions have the capacity not only to improve worker safety but to do so cost-effectively.”

Added HRS director, Roger Poeth: “HRS and MVIS share a commitment to the development and application of technologically advanced ITS products and we look forward to unveiling further applications of the new safety solution later in the year.”

The MVIS/Intellicone corporate partnership relates to distribution as well as product development, and MVIS is now Intellicone’s exclusive hire partner.

A-One+ purchase 10 more signs following previous success

MVIS are delighted to announce that A-One+ have purchased 10 new variable message signs (VMS’s) following our successful partnership in 2013. During A-One+’s recent refurbishment of the A1, there were zero standing traffic related incidents, a result that was squarely attributed to the success of the VMS signs supplied by MVIS.

The operation ran from July-August 2013, with 10 VMS-C variable message signs operational during the A-One+’s refurbishment of the A1 western bypass between Newcastle and Gateshead.

A-One+ credited the highly visible pictograms with ensuring that there were no incidents during the entire 6 week redevelopment. When they had used fixed frame signs during a similar project in2009 there had been several incidents, which is why they turned to us.

The firm have purchased 10 more VMS signs for ta similar project, for use in a semi-permanent capacity on the same stretch of road. This repeat purchase is a testament to the customer’s belief in the capacity the hire signs demonstrated last year and their ability to ensure the safety of road users.

Nottingham City Council continues partnership with MVIS

MVIS is delighted that Nottingham City Council has purchased three of our VMS signs to use help manage traffic in their ongoing £1billion infrastructure redevelopment project.

Nottingham has become one of the first European cities to integrate ITS traffic management solutions, incorporating a number of different products and control room service. They have reported that the solution has been exceptionally well received by Nottingham road users.

Our ITS traffic management solution has been implemented to help reduce congestion and delays to journey times during Nottingham’s £1billion redevelopment, which includes major improvements to both the city’s railway station and major junctions on the A453.

Our VMS signs help to inform road users of upcoming road works suggest alternative travel routes so that they can reach their destination on time. Our ITS solutions also incorporates CCTV, so that traffic levels can be monitored throughout the area affected by the road works. All of this equipment is solar powered, which helps to keep maintenance costs down by getting rid of the need for preliminary groundwork.

The purchase of three additional VMS signs indicates the Nottingham City Council have been delighted with the efficacy of the hired signs used to date. We’re happy to have another satisfied customer and we are thrilled with the results we have achieved so far.

For more information on our VMS signs, you can send us an email through our contact page or call us on 01629 580 570.

MVIS help to increase student safety at Hertfordshire University

MVIS recently completed some works for Hertfordshire University helping to increase student safety.

The university was concerned that increasing traffic and increasing speeds outside the university entrance was a potential danger to students. MVIS worked with the university’s security company to develop a traffic calming solution.

The radar uses the latest technology to collect consistently accurate traffic data in high definition. It operates in the 245MHz bandwidth and produces a radar beam with five times greater resolution than other radar traffic detection devices. The Dual Radar determines vehicle speed by measuring the delay from one radar beam to the next. This also determines vehicle direction. It then automatically sends a signal to a VMS, which instantly transmits a message to drivers that they have to slow down.

VMS from intelligent transport system provider (ITS) MVIS

As a market leading supplier of intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions, MVIS has a range of products which are effective for traffic management, events management and advertising purposes. This range includes variable message signs (VMS) which provide high-impact coloured displays.

VMS from MVIS feature a five colour matrix and give the user the choice of using red, green,  blue and white in addition to the standard amber. This makes them a highly conspicuous piece of signage which stands out and attracts attention, even in crowd situations.

The versatility of the VMS makes them a high valuable asset in a variety of situations, including for traffic management purposes.  As the signs can present Chapter 8/ MS4 style pictograms as well as text, they become a fantastic intelligent transport system (ITS) solution. MVIS has seen that often coloured images, such as the pictograms, are very quickly interpreted by motorists and the information displayed is rapidly acted upon – even by foreign drivers who are not always able to understand text. MVIS recently supplied VMS to A-One+ for using during their refurbishment of the A1 and they recorded a zero shunt rate during the works, compared with the several incidents that took place when they used static signs for a similar project.

The ability of the VMS to display pictograms alongside text also makes them an excellent events management tool. With the five colour matrix display making the signs conspicuous and visible, the VMS are an effective way to provide information to large crowds of people.  Using the displays, events organisers can direct crowds effectively around event sites – and the changeable display means information can be updated regularly. Recently, MVIS’ VMS were used by Wembley Stadium to control crowds for the England football internationals against Germany and Chile.

VMS are also an adept tool for advertising purposes. As they can be remotely updated, by SMS or via the internet, they reduce the need for a full team being dedicated to their use as as an advertising tool. This reduction in man power makes them a more cost-effective advertising solution than other methods. For advertising, the ability of the VMS to display the Chapter 8/ MS4 style pictograms is crucial as the high impact display facilitates high customer response and the pictograms will draw in foreign customers unable to read text advertising. VMS have previously been supplied to the Bakewell Show who used them to great advertising effect, boosting significantly the amount of visitors who used the onsite park and ride.

Intelligent transport system (ITS) provider MVIS in great shape

Leading temporary intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions provider MVIS was formed in 2012, when Colour Mobile VMS, established three years earlier, was joined by P&D Specialist Services  to create the new company.

Colour Mobile VMS had become the first intelligent transport system (ITS) company in the UK to supply colour solar powered mobile variable message signs (VMS), manufactured by Bartco Traffic Equipment, to the UK traffic management, events and advertising sectors.

Colour Mobile’s union with P&D followed a joint venture between the companies to deliver the Olympic Route Network intelligent transport system (ITS) contract for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In what was believed to be the largest single deployment of solar powered VMS in the world, the joint venture supplied almost 200 units.

MVIS’ product portfolio now includes a wide range of intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions in addition to VMS, including ANPR, CCTV, radar and lighting, and clients include Transport for London, Balfour Beatty, A-one+, the Metropolitan Police and numerous events organisations.

The company began 2013 with the launch of a series of new intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions, including a portable solar powered journey time solution (SPJTS) and the Solar 2012 multi-use trailer platform, the only product on the market facilitating the mounting of multiple products on a single, solar powered, mobile platform.

The company in excellent shape for the next stage in its development.

Created in partnership – New ITS solution from MVIS to be launched at Traffex

Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS) has developed a portable solar powered journey time solution (SPJTS) incorporating the latest software and hardware technology, providing users with a comprehensive cost-effective and stand-alone solution for short-term road works projects.

Affirming MVIS’ status as one of the UK’s leading Intelligent Transport System (ITS) solutions providers, the package to be launched at Traffex demonstrates the company’s commitment to working in partnership with customers to create solutions designed to help the UK’s road network operate more efficiently.

The launch of the SPJTS marks the beginning of what looks set to be another exciting year for the mobile and  solar powered monitoring and visual information systems supplier, who last year received industry-wide acclaim for undertaking the world’s largest single deployment of solar powered variable message signs (VMS) for Transport for London’s Olympic Route Network.

Solar Powered Journey Time Solution

The SPJTS was developed in response to interest from a leading infrastructure services supplier, reflecting MVIS’ ongoing dedication to develop innovative ITS solutions in partnership with public and private sector traffic management organisations.

MVIS’ SPJTS is a comprehensive solution, incorporating the latest software and hardware technology.  It is portable and solar powered, and so may be quickly and easily installed without the need for civil engineering or external power provision.  As such, it is a cost-effective and stand-alone solution for short-term road works.

The ITS solution enables road users to make informed decisions regarding how to minimise journey disruption, warning of delays and advising of their extent, providing users with the opportunity to take an alternative route if necessary.

The SPJTS comprises two Vysionics’ SkyHawk ANPR cameras mounted on MVIS’ new *Solar 2012 multi-use trailers and a Bartco VMS-A. When deployed the system converts information gathered utilising the SkyHawk ANPR system into a message which is viewed by the road user and gives prior notification of journey times through a roadwork scheme.

*Solar 2012 Multi-Use Trailer Platform

A world first to be launched at Traffex, MVIS’ Solar 2012 multi-use trailer platform is the only product on the market facilitating the mounting of multiple products on a single, solar powered, mobile platform, allowing the flexible combination of a selection of temporary ITS equipment from MVIS’ portfolio.

The Solar 2012 was developed in response to growing customer demand for a mobile multiple application product, reflecting MVIS’ ongoing endeavor to create not only new solutions but also new ITS products to meet the market’s evolving requirements, utilising leading-edge technology.

The product is simple and cost-effective to deploy, requiring no civil engineering and third party communications, and is environmentally friendly and silent in operation.

Said MVIS’ managing director, Tony Price:  “2012 was a milestone year for MVIS, affirming our status as a leading player in the ITS industry, thanks to a number of high profile contracts including the Olympics.

“2013 is already shaping up to be another terrific year for the company, as we work in partnership with major highways industry organisations to create innovative ITS solutions, such as the SPJTS, to help the UK’s road network operate with increasing efficiency.

“We are also tremendously proud of our continuous work to listen and respond to our customers, developing new ITS products like the Solar 2012, that will enable  them to provide a cost-effective service.”

MVIS will be exhibiting at Traffex, stand H61, where visitors will be able to view a selection of its core products, including the Solar 2012 multi-use trailer platform, the Bartco VMS-A and Vysionics’ SkyHawk  ANPR camera.  The VMS-A will also feature in Traffex’ night time street scenario.

TFL thanks MVIS for “Critical” olympic and paralympic support

MVIS has received a formal letter of thanks from a Transport for London director for its “critical” support during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In a letter to MVIS’ managing director, Tony Price, Alan Bristow, TfL’s traffic directorate surface transport director, said: “I would like to formally thank you for the work you and your team have done for the planning and delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Without doubt, we found the support from MVIS to be critical to our operation. As you know, the 177 mobile VMS that you deployed was the largest ever such undertaking in London. Our people were unfamiliar with the operating system and we were therefore not only dependent on you and your team for logistic support in moving/redeploying signs at often short notice, but also for the back office support to London streets traffic control centre traffic co-ordinators.

“I am aware that the back office support that you and your team provided, particularly Steve Young and Keith Menzies, commenced well in advance of the Games, initially helping us to become familiar with the system and then ensuring that we were able to effectively assign signs to groups, was very responsive and available at short-notice and at all hours. The support helped us to ensure that the operation of Games Lanes was effective, thus directly benefiting the Games vehicle fleets and helping us to keep London moving.

“Please accept my grateful thanks on behalf of TfL.”

TfL PRAISES MVIS’ “OUTSTANDING” OLYMPIC CONTRIBUTION

Transport for London (TfL) has commended mobile signage and eco-lighting provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) Ltd, for its “outstanding” contribution to The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Until recently known as Colour Mobile VMS, MVIS undertook TfL’s contract to supply variable message signage for the event’s Olympic Route Network.

In what is believed to be the largest single deployment of solar powered variable message signs in the world, almost 200 units were employed for the network, enabling key participants, such as athletes and officials, to travel safely, securely and efficiently between venues and their accommodation, while also keeping London and the rest of the UK moving.

As the event closed, TfL’s London streets traffic control centre operations manager, Esmon George MBE MILT, contacted the team at MVIS personally to thank them for their “outstanding support”, adding: “We couldn’t have achieved what we did without you”.

TfL’s operational process improvements manager, John Tenten, was also impressed by MVIS’ work, saying: “Your assistance during the games made our role considerably easier”.

Commented MVIS managing director Tony Price:  “Because our sign management system allows multiple signs to be grouped, messages were sent to multiple signs on different parts of the Olympic Route Network in a single transmission.  This allowed TfL to dynamically control access to the Games Lane, ensuring that athletes, press and VIPs transited quickly and safely, and that London’s traffic kept flowing. The fact that the signs displayed the Games Lane messages in different colours enabled road users to instantly identify whether the lane was in use.

“We’re delighted to have been a part of such a massive international event, and TfL’s praise is testament to our capability within this sector.”
