Stop Incursions Before They Happen

A Preventative Approach to Work Zone Safety

Incursions are one of the most significant dangers in work zones. Whether on highways, in quarries, or across major infrastructure projects, an unauthorised vehicle entering a live site introduces immediate and serious risk. These incidents can lead to operational disruption, damage to equipment, and, most importantly, harm to the workforce.

The challenge is not just managing incursions — it is preventing them entirely.

The Problem with Work Zone Incursions

Work zones are inherently high-risk environments. Reduced visibility, changing layouts, and driver non-compliance all contribute to the likelihood of unauthorised access. Traditional safety measures such as warning signage, manual supervision, and static barriers play an important role, but they are ultimately reactive.

These solutions rely heavily on driver behaviour or human intervention. They do not actively stop an incursion before it reaches the workforce.

As a result, there is a growing need for smarter, preventative safety systems that reduce risk at the point of entry.

Introducing the MVIS Incursion VMS

The MVIS Incursion VMS is an intelligent, fully integrated access control system designed to prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering work zones.

By combining Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), a Variable Message Sign (VMS), and automated barrier control, the system creates a secure and controlled entry point that removes uncertainty and enhances site safety.

Unlike traditional solutions, the Incursion VMS does not just warn drivers — it actively controls access.

How the Incursion VMS Prevents Unauthorised Access

As a vehicle approaches the work zone, the system immediately identifies it using ANPR technology. The vehicle’s registration is checked against a pre-approved database, allowing the system to make an instant decision.

Authorised vehicles are granted access, while unauthorised vehicles are stopped before they can enter the site. At the same time, the integrated VMS displays clear, real-time messaging to communicate instructions, warnings, or site-specific information to drivers.

This seamless process ensures that only approved vehicles gain entry, significantly reducing the risk of incursions.

Creating Safer, More Controlled Work Zones

By managing access at the perimeter, the MVIS Incursion VMS transforms open work sites into controlled environments. This level of control is critical in high-risk industries where workforce safety depends on predictable site conditions.

The system reduces reliance on manual gatekeepers, minimises the risk of human error, and ensures consistent enforcement of access rules. This not only improves safety but also enhances operational efficiency.

For organisations aiming to achieve zero harm, preventing incursions is a key step forward.

Designed for Real-World Deployment

The MVIS Incursion VMS has been engineered with flexibility and practicality in mind. Its portable, trailer-mounted design allows for rapid deployment in under 30 minutes, making it suitable for both long-term projects and temporary works.

The system is solar-powered, enabling operation in remote or off-grid locations without additional infrastructure. With remote management capabilities, users can update access permissions and messaging in real time, ensuring full control wherever the system is deployed.

This makes the Incursion VMS an ideal solution for highways, construction sites, quarries, and infrastructure projects.

Enhancing Communication with Integrated VMS Technology

In addition to access control, the built-in Variable Message Sign provides a powerful communication tool. Clear, dynamic messaging can be used to display safety instructions, site information, or driver guidance before entry.

This reinforces safe behaviour and improves driver awareness at a critical point — before they enter the work zone.

By combining communication with control, the Incursion VMS delivers a more comprehensive approach to work zone safety.

The Future of Work Zone Safety is Preventative

As safety standards continue to evolve, the industry is shifting away from reactive measures towards proactive, technology-driven solutions. Preventing incidents before they occur is now the priority.

The MVIS Incursion VMS represents this shift. It is a smarter, more effective way to manage work zone access, reduce risk, and protect the workforce.

Because the safest incursion is the one that never happens.

An Introduction to The Fatal 6

The Fatal 6’ is a list compiled by the Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health & Safety Committee, back in 2017. Identifying six high consequence hazards, these being the main cause of fatalities with 94% off all accidents in the industry falling in to these 6 common themes. As the committee works towards their aim of ‘Zero Harm’ then first they must deliver ‘Zero Fatalities’. By utilising already developed tools and solutions with an uncompromising approach, the MPA Committee concluded that they could potentially reduce up to 75% of the most serious health & safety incidents.
