MVIS takes part in ‘Time to Talk’

As an attempt to try and improve mental health and wellbeing in the highways sector National Highways have started the ‘Journey to Wellbeing’. An initiative to get highway workers to talk and be open about their mental health.

The team at MVIS took part in Mind’s ‘Time to Talk’, the team at the Tansley offices sat down and perpetrated the importance of talking about their mental health. At MVIS we strive to ensure that our teams are happy and healthy this being said we believe that the National Highways Journey to Wellbeing is something important to take part in.

At MVIS we have three trained Mental Health First Aiders, our UK Group Commercial and Operations Director Anne Ashman, Purchasing and Stock Control Supervisor Rebecca Prince, and North Delivery Supervisor Jon Larkins. They were all in attendance today and were happy to give offer themselves to staff if they want a confidential chat with the team.

During ‘Time to Talk’ the three Mental Health First Aiders demonstrated the importance of talking to people so that you do not get overwhelmed. We were introduced to time to talk as a reminder that people do not have to keep feelings and emotions penned, it is important to talk to and share those feelings to prevent anything unfortunate happening in the future.

It is said that 5% of the adult population suffers with depression and 1 in 7 children have been diagnosed with a type of mental disorder. Minds and National Highways ‘Time to Talk’ intend to help the companies over the country to speak out and raise awareness.

Jon Larkins, our North Delivery Supervisor, states that human interaction has helped him feel better in the past, saying: “Sometimes it’s about going into stores with a smile on your face it makes you more approachable for a chat, there have been times I have stood in the line at a supermarket and by the time I am at the front of the queue I have heard their life story. So, it is little moments like that where you can be approachable and smile at someone.”

National Highways has scheduled a different day for every month of the year to help improve mental health. They have organised days such as Thank You day in July, World Mental Health Day in October, something MVIS has already celebrated, and National Fitness Day in September.

2022 Year in Focus

As we look back on the year 2022, it’s clear that it was a year filled with both challenges and triumphs both on, and away from our highways.

The past 12 months have continued to test us in ways that few could have imagined. However, amidst all the turmoil, there were also glimmers of hope and progress. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most significant events of 2022 for MVIS, whose year included a major landmark for the company, sustainability milestones, community outreach, new products and more.

2022: 10 Years in business

MVIS was born in 2012 and achieved an almost immediate level of success, with a successful London 2012 Olympic Games contract putting a marker down for what was to come. A decade on, MVIS Ltd are today the UK’s most trusted supplier of trailer-based, solar powered technology such as Variable Message Signs (VMS), CCTV, ANPR and Data Collection solutions.

In January 2022, the company kicked off its year in the community, partaking in a ‘Treecycling’ campaign. Treecycling, or Christmas tree recycling, is the responsible way to dispose of cut live trees at the end of the holiday season.

MVIS, based in Matlock, Derbyshire, is a partner of local charity Ashgate Hospice, which offers its local community this ‘Treecycle’ service, enabling households to pay £15 to have their trees removed in a hassle-free way that is also good for the environment. MVIS dedicated volunteer time, assisting with tree collection and disposal.

Early 2022 saw a couple more significant milestones for the business.

The first, the launch of the MVIS portable CCTV unit. A solar powered CCTV solution, the product has a number of key benefits – including a small footprint – that makes it a perfect choice for worksites.

Additionally, the company took another step on its sustainability charge by becoming a founder member of Greener Highways – a sustainability organisation dedicated to accelerating the highways sector’s collective charge towards meeting key sustainability goals and looking at how it can shape the future of such a heavy carbon sector.

A decade of sustainable thinking was celebrated in 2022, and befitting of the MVIS way, a key product integration was developed with the environment in mind. MVIS delivers on its environmental ethos with the development of its ITS Integrated Environmental Sensor – compatible with every single MVIS unit. The ITS Integrated Environmental Sensor offers customers the ability to monitor the external environment, producing a wide range of air pollution data that can be used to inform and direct on issues of air pollution safety.

Mirroring a decade of sustainable focus, 2022 brought a celebration of 10 years of innovations.

MVIS’ very own web studio system was the company’s first major innovation success and was the single biggest reason for the company being successful in its aforementioned 2012 Olympic Games contract. A standout innovative feature at the time, was MVIS’ grouping facility – the capability of programming multiple signs with the same message at the click of a button from a web-based system. The innovation won the day.

Since then, HD compact units, Portable CCTV, Solar IP towers, 5 colour VMS units are, amongst others, all innovative solutions MVIS has brought to the UK highways market.

In late 2022, MVIS exhibited at the Highways UK exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham in November.

They had a lot of their latest innovations on show, with the highlight being their new Integrated Environmental Decibel Data that was captured live at the event.

The company also kept its thoughts on sustainability and gave its product specification sheets a fresh new look and put them all together in a brochure, which could be downloaded by scanning a QR code, as opposed to printing on paper.

As the year ended, the company launched its customer focused, value-adding campaign; VMSo Much More.

The campaign centres around all of the additional benefits a customer sees when hiring a unit from MVIS. When you hire from MVIS, you don’t just get the best kit for getting your message across. You get So Much More. As well as Award Winning Customer Service 24/7, you get a bundle of amazing extras as standard. From data collection to Radar, Environmental sensors to message programming and battery changes.

Looking back on 2022, Anne Ashman, MVIS’ Group Commercial and Operations Director told us:

2022 was a big year for MVIS. Celebrating 10 years in business was a really satisfying event. However, with that said, we’re not slowing down. 2023 has more products in the pipeline – our R&D team have been fantastic in designing and engineering what’s to come. We also began 2023 with assisting Ashgate Hospice on their latest Treecycle mission.

We now continue to add value to our customers and enhance our platinum service reputation, as well as continue the VMSo Much More campaign message.”

It’s Not Just VMS, It’s MVIS VMS.

As a result of our commitment to our clients, we have built a reputation for excellent customer service and expertise. Our expertise focusses on a large range of ITS solutions, none more so than our Original 5 Colour VMS.

We have developed our core products and solutions for use in many different sectors and applications. With over a decade of expertise and innovation, if you need VMS then you need to come to the best in the business.

The Best VMS

For urban environments and roads with speed limits under 50mph, our VMS-A is the ideal solution that works great for road traffic and pedestrians. For roads with speed limits above 50mph, our VMS-C is the right option. Being our largest VMS display, this unit is great for communicating information to high-speed traffic. With a 5-colour LED display for text or pictograms, the VMS-A and VMS-C are the best solutions available for getting the message across when it is critical to do so.

We also offer a compact 2-color HD Compact VMS for construction sites and other work areas where space is limited. In addition to recording traffic volume and speed, it displays text, pictograms and animated messages just like the VMS-A and VMS-C.

Product Integrations

The VMS-A can be integrated with a wide range of technology that increases its functionality. It discreetly contains a data collation radar that can be used to collect traffic data on speed, time and date.  As a low-cost alternative to many data collection solutions on the market, the VMS-A can be used as a data source for the analysis of traffic trends, providing greater intelligence for planning all types of projects.

With our CCTV VMS, you can monitor and respond to situations quickly without having to be physically present on-site by integrating an HD CCTV camera with the VMS-A.

Added Value

We have always placed a high priority on adding value to our service. Although we specialise in portable solar powered ITS solutions, we never lose sight of the fact that we are ultimately a service-based company. We take pride in offering our customers the MVIS ‘Platinum Service Promise’,  with the aim of delivering a ‘Platinum’ level service for a ‘Bronze’ level price. We highlight all the aspects that set us apart from other suppliers in our Quality Service Promise, which emphasises our commitment to a ‘Platinum Level Service’.

Why We Choose to Support Ashgate Hospice

Known for our charitable work, MVIS is a company that cares about the community. We are lucky enough to be able to show our support within our community by sponsoring locally run clubs such as Matlock Town Football Club. For the past two years though, we have been pushing to support a local charity that has suffered more than most, Ashgate Hospice.

Ashgate Hospice is a charity that provides compassionate, specialist palliative and end-of-life care, free of charge, to patients with a life-limiting illness and their families across North Derbyshire. The Hospice vision is that everyone in North Derbyshire with a life-limiting illness, and the people important to them, can enjoy every moment together and die comfortably and with dignity.

Recently, Anne, Ben A and Ben K were all at Ashgate to discuss future support opportunities, and they found it to be a very humbling experience. The amount of money they need for just one week to support a patient is immense, so every little bit that we raise really does help. They were also told about Kimberley’s story, a young widow whose husband was admitted to Ashgate Hospice in the final months of his life following a three-year battle with bladder cancer.

It’s an extremely sad story but it’s also one that is incredibly moving and highlights how important the care that Ashgate Hospice provides is. Thanks to the support from Ashgate, Kimberley’s husband, Andrew, was able to pass peacefully with his wife of 26 years sitting by his side.

It’s for reasons like this that we are motivated to think of new ways to raise funds and support Ashgate Hospice. We are very proud of the fact that we have a fantastic team here at MVIS and Bartco UK who are always willing to get involved with charity work. We’re currently in the middle of our charity Bake Off competition, but this year we’ve stepped it up a bit with more weeks and more rounds. We sent out Kimberley and Andrew’s story for our staff to read, and it really hit home with them as to why it is so important that we continue to support Ashgate Hospice. We know that finding the motivation on a Sunday night to bake can be tough, but it’s clear how big a difference it can make.

Andrew is just one of the thousands of patients each year that Ashgate Hospice cares for. In order for that to continue, it’s imperative that they receive support from the local community and local businesses like us. If you’d like to find out how you can support them too, please visit their website and help make a difference.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director comments, “We are proud of the part that we have played in supporting Ashgate Hospice over the last few years. Going to visit them and hearing about Kimberley’s story makes each fundraising activity that we have done even more rewarding and we are determined to increase our support next year. Ashgate is an integral part of the community, so it’s important that we continue to support them the best that we can.”

MVIS visits Ashgate Hospice

Last week, we went to visit our friends at Ashgate Hospice to discuss how we can help support their upcoming High Peak Trail event.

Ashgate Hospice is a local charity that provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care to patients with a life-limiting illness and their families across North Derbyshire.

We have worked with Ashgate Hospice in countless fundraising activities over the years, but this was the first time that we could go inside and look around the hospice. Our UK Group Commercial and Operations Director, Anne Ashman, along with our Marketing Executive, Ben Ashman, and Marketing Manager, Ben Kettell, made the journey up to Chesterfield to pay them a visit.

MVIS Visits Ashgate

Ashgate Hospice is not an NHS hospice and all the care that it provides is free of charge. In order to continue providing care when people need it most, Ashgate relies heavily on fundraising and community support from local businesses like us.

We are currently doing our charity Bake Off competition again this year, with all the money raised going to Ashgate Hospice, and we have a lot more planned for the future to help support them. Earlier this year, we sponsored their High Peak Trail Walk event and provided our VMS to help with messaging for their Sparkle Night Walk

It was a pleasure to meet some of the amazing people who help make Ashgate Hospice what it is and we are very grateful for the fantastic work that they do for so many people in our community. We can’t wait to work with them next and hopefully it won’t be as long as last time before we can visit them again.

Claire Unwin, Marketing and Communications Manager at Ashgate Hospice said, “It was a pleasure to meet you and show you around Ashgate Hospice, we can’t wait to work with you. Thank you for your invaluable support.”

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director added, “We have worked with Ashgate for a few years now and so it was great to finally have a look around the hospice, which we haven’t been able to do yet primarily because of COVID-19 restrictions. We’re delighted to be able to support local causes such as Ashgate as they continue to make a significant contribution to the lives of local residents and their families.”

Highways UK 2022 Review

With this year’s Highways UK coming to an end, we’re reflecting on a fantastic few days at The NEC in Birmingham.

Last year’s Highways UK was a great success, so we were very excited to exhibit this year and make it even better. A strong MVIS team, featuring familiar and new faces, was out in force at the event.

We recently celebrated our 10 year anniversary and so the theme for this year was ‘A Decade of Driving Innovation’. We had a lot of our latest innovations on show, with the highlight being our new Integrated Environmental Decibel Data that was captured live at the event.

Like last year, the event was another great success, with us receiving a lot of compliments about our stand. We had five staff work the stand this year, including our newest team member, Ben Kettell, who attended his first trade show and Highways UK event for the company.

Marketing Manager, Ben Kettell commented, “It was great to attend Highways UK for the first time and represent MVIS. The stand looked fantastic and it was great to meet so many friendly faces from the industry. It has been a very rewarding experience that has helped me get to know our customers better and it filled me with pride seeing the preparations the Marketing team has made contribute to the success of the event.”

Amongst some of the materials prepared for the show, we had brand new merchandise bags to hand out with branded air fresheners and ice scrapers inside. We also had our ‘VMS Special Offer’ flyers available to take away as part of our latest campaign.

We also gave our product specification sheets a fresh new look and put them all together in a brochure, which could be downloaded by scanning a QR code. If you didn’t manage to catch us at Highways UK or if you’d just like to learn more about products, you can download our catalogue, here

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director added, “Highways UK is the biggest event of the year for us and the industry, so it was great to make such a good impression with our stand. Even though this year we focused on innovation, we wanted to continue our efforts to be more environmentally responsible. By creating a product catalog and encouraging visitors to scan a QR instead, we ended up printing a lot less product sheets out and on fewer pieces of paper. We are already looking forward to next year and I’m excited about what ideas our Marketing team will come up with.”

The whole MVIS Highways UK 2022 team wanted to wish everyone who stopped by a big thank you. It was a pleasure catching up and meeting with so many faces. We look forward to seeing you all next year!

A Decade of Driving Innovation on display at Highways UK

On November 2nd and 3rd at the NEC Birmingham, at Highways UK 2022, MVIS looks forward to welcoming visitors to stand H16 to celebrate a decade of driving innovation, reinforce the company’s long-standing sustainable focus as well as discussing its ever-increasing range of value adding solutions.

The company has always held innovation, sustainability and service at its core of values, and at Highways UK 2022 these three key pillars of MVIS will be on display for the sector to see.

A Decade of Driving Innovation…

An MVIS company staple is its attitude towards innovation; never resting on its laurels and continually investing in its research & development programme to continue to better itself for the benefit of its customers.

“That means we are constantly moving forward and fulfilling required gaps in the market with our bespoke products and R&D department,” says Graeme Lee, MVIS’ Sales Director.

“We’re never willing to accept stagnation.” Graeme continued. “We place great pride and great emphasis on being at the forefront of technologies within our field, and it’s a stance that hasn’t wavered across the last 10 years. At Highways UK, we’re looking forward to putting our innovation ethos in the spotlight.”

Sustainable Thinking

MVIS has a long-standing sustainable commitment and is constantly searching for ways to reduce its environmental footprint. MVIS’ products are designed to be energy efficient, and the company encourages its employees to operate with sustainability in mind.

MVIS are proud to be members of both Greener Highways and the Carbon Club, and the company puts its money where its mouth is when it comes to sustainability.

“It’s been clear there’s been a major shift over the last few years towards sustainability in the highways sector and that’s absolutely fantastic – but it’s not a recent thing for us.” Said Anne Ashman, Group Commercial & Operations Director.

“Recently, we made the switch from product sheets to QR codes to showcase our product information when at events and exhibitions. So, at Highways UK 2022, we’ll be asking people to scan rather than handing out reams of paper across the 2 days.”

Adding Value

When you hire VMS from MVIS, you don’t just get the best kit for getting your message across. And with new, improved pricing, there is no better time to put VMS to the test.

Providing a Platinum level of service is a further MVIS ethos, and the company will display all its added value solutions at Highways UK 2022.

From environmental sensors to radar, data collection to message programming, as well as 24/7 support and battery changes, the MVIS service doesn’t simply stop at VMS unit hire.

Anne signed off before the show by saying:

“We’re looking forward to the conversations Highways UK provides the platform for. It’s such a well-attended event and we’re excited to share everything we have to offer.”

Project EDWARD and National Safe Speeds Day

Wednesday the 19th is National Safe Speed Day, which coincides with Day 3 of the #ProjectEdward campaign. #SafeSpeedsDay aims to encourage drivers to reflect on their driving and commit to making every journey a safe one that doesn’t exceed the speed limits.

Project EDWARD is an initiative which promotes safety on our roads with this year’s theme being ‘Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour’. Its Week of Action began on Monday the 17th of October, with police forces across the UK increasing their speed enforcement activity, focusing on roads or areas that are known to be where speeding happens or where past incidents have occurred.

As a company that prioritises safety, particularly with speed, showing our support for this initiative is important to us. Over the last 10 years, our ITS solutions have served the UK’s highways and helped to keep them safe. Products like our Radar Activated VMS, IVD Radar and HD Data Collection Radar can all be used to solve speed safety issues.

Our Radar Activated VMS can be used to display a variety of vital messages, speed alerts and responsive information, all triggered by the driver’s speed. The VMS-AVMS-C and HD Compact VMS can all be integrated with radar to increase their capabilities whilst still maintaining all the fantastic features of our standard VMS.

There are lots of great benefits to Radar Activated VMS, such as the capability to detect speed and use the VMS-A’s messaging power for ‘Specific Speed Messaging’, where messages can be overridden with a speed roundel if a vehicle exceeds the set speed limit. When the unit detects the speed of an approaching vehicle, it alerts the driver of their speed and advises them to slow down if necessary.

All our VMS also discreetly house a data collection radar which can collect vehicle logs on speed, time and date. By allowing users to identify traffic trends and risks, such as speed or volume of traffic, they can then take steps to solve them.

As a fleet operator, making sure that our drivers are driving safely and within the speed limit is crucial. This is why we’re proud to achieve a FORS Bronze accreditation, which shows our commitment to excellence in driver and vehicle safety, as well as efficiency and environmental protection.

If you’d like to learn more about how our Radar Activated VMS can solve your speed safety issues, or any of our other products for that matter, get in touch with our Sales team at 01629 580570 or by email at: sales@m-vis.co.uk

The Great MVIS Bake Off Begins

This year we’re back with another charity baking competition, The Great MVIS Bake Off. Inspired by the TV show, this year the competition is being stepped up a few gears, with more rounds, more people and a different theme each week.

Last year’s Bake Off competition went down a treat with the team as it was the first time in a long time that everyone could come together. In the 5 man finale, Pip and Tim narrowly beat out the rest and were crowned winners. Will Tim be looking to win again this year?

This year’s competition will last for 11 weeks instead of 5, starting today on the 17th of October and finishing with a final on the 21st of December. There are 12 members of the MVIS and Bartco UK team taking part, and they will be split into groups of 3, with 2 people from each group advancing into the next round. The team can buy a slice of their favourite bakes for £1, with all of the money raised going to Ashgate Hospice

The schedule is as follows:

To kick things off in Week 1, Ben, Chris and Juliette each baked and brought in a delicious cake of their choice. In contention was Ben with his Lotus Biscoff cake, Juliette with her chocolate cream cake and Chris with his Halloween-themed chocolate tray cake.

A slice from each cake was cut up into small pieces and tasted by the entire team, who then had to write down their favourite on a piece of paper to vote.

After carefully counting up the votes, the winners of The Great MVIS Bake Off Week 1 were…Ben with his Lotus Biscoff cake and Juliette with her chocolate cream cake! Ben’s Lotus Biscoff cake went down particularly well with the team, which earned him an incredible 8 votes.

Stay tuned for Week 2 where Ben K, Alex and Tim will be baking some brilliant biscuits! Ben and Juliette will be advancing into the second round, with Ben baking again in Week 5, Spice Week and Juliette in Week 6, Botanical Week.

Make sure to follow and keep tabs on our Instagram account so you don’t miss a bake.

Supporting World Mental Health Day 2022

Here at MVIS, we take mental health very seriously. As a socially responsible employer, we feel it is important to focus on mental health every day and not just today. Working in an industry that suffers from high suicide rates, it is of vital importance that we stay one step ahead when it comes to mental health.

In the UK, suicide claims an alarming number of lives each year, with many of those in the Highways and Construction industries. As safety is one of the core foundations at MVIS in addition to mental health, there is no denying the obligation we have in raising awareness of this to help make the industry safer for everyone.

Last year for World Mental Health Day, we supported YoungMinds, the mental health charity for young people and participated in their #HellowYellow campaign by donating money and wearing a hi-vis or yellow clothing.

In support of World Mental Health Day this year, we got all our staff together for some cake and a chat to help encourage the conversation around mental health. The theme for this year is to make mental health and wellbeing a priority, which is something that we have been working to achieve for many years now.

Over the years, we have taken a number of steps to safeguard the wellbeing and mental health of our team. One of the things we’ve done to support our team is giving them access to 3 qualified mental health first aiders, 2 female and 1 male. Our mental health first aiders are Rebecca Prince,  MVIS’ Purchasing & Stock Control Supervisor, Jon Larkins, our North Delivery Supervisor and the UK Group Commercial and Operations Director for both MVIS, Anne Ashman

One of our more recent developments is providing our team with access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), an anonymous advice and support service offered by Peninsula. If you feel that you may need advice or support on your mental health, some helpful links will be included below.

Anne Ashman, UK Group Commercial and Operations Director comments, “The mental health of our team is one of our top priorities and today was a great opportunity for them to have a break and spend some time together. Here at MVIS and Bartco UK, we have been working with our staff for a long time now on ways we can best safeguard their mental health and wellbeing, which has helped us build the support system we have in place today.”
