UK First: Colour Mobile VMS brings Colour to UK highways

Innovative signage provider, Colour Mobile VMS, is set to brighten up UK roads with the provision of its new five-colour variable message signs.

This is the first time the Highways Agency has approved mobile signage for use in colours other than amber. The Colour Mobile VMS products will feature colour options of amber, red, white, green and blue.

This is an exciting development on the UK roads as colour is an impactful way to gain drivers’ attention about road conditions, speed enforcement, traffic calming and incidents. Chapter 8 signage can be replicated and colour is internationally recongised as warning signage, so there are many advantages.

The colour message signs have already started to appear at events around the UK and now with official approval from the Highways Agency, expectations for the signage are high.

Another exciting advantage of the new messaging signs, which will transform response times to incidents and change on our motorway network, is the ability to update messages instantly by SMS text message. This is a major development for traffic agencies and roadwork companies as they can keep the public up to date with what is happening, in seconds from their mobile phone.

The environmentally-friendly signs feature a non-glare, high-bright, low-power consuming LED display, which runs off a fully autonomous solar changing system, avoiding the need for expensive battery or electricity costs.

Tony Price, Managing Director at Colour Mobile VMS says, “This is the first time mobile colour signage for UK highways has been available in the UK, so we’re expecting a very positive response to the products. The signs will be of particular interest to any organisation managing traffic control and road incidents, plus those who already supply to that trade.

“All our customers can be assured of the highest quality products and complete reliability. They are proven and tested and widely used by our manufacturer BARTCO in Australia. But because we are UK based, we can offer 24/7 service and support. We welcome conversations from all parties interested in the colour matrix signs.”

Colour Mobile VMS is officially launching the colour matrix signs at Traffex on March 29-31, 2011 at stand C74. For further information please visit www.colourmobilevms.com

Exposure at the Showman’s Show

Colour Mobile Variable message signs were out and about at the Showman’s Show 20th -21st Oct 2010 with Amber Langis part of the Martins group.

It was great to show of our new products to market and especially showing the visual impact that colour variable message signs have compared to the variable signs on offer at the moment.

The feedback that was generated from the show was great and it proved that there is a definite place for the 4 colour displays within the event and festival industry.

Please take time to have a look at our gallery to see our signs in action out and about.

The Showman’s Show

… is the only outdoor show of its kind in the UK. The first Showman’s Show was held in 1984 at the Newark Showground, with only 80 or so exhibitors. Until 1989 the show was held every two years but due to demand, from exhibitors and show visitors alike, the then Lance Publications made the decision to hold the event annually. Initially it moved around the country but eventually settled at the Newbury Showground, which has been its home for the last 15 years. Today the show attracts nearly 5,000 visitors over two days and has in excess of 350 exhibitors, who show the most sophisticated structures, equipment and entertainment demanded by the event industry at large.

Colour Mobile on the Beach with Volleyball England

Colour Mobile Variable message signs had the pleasure of advertising for the event and event sponsors at the VEBT Bournemouth Volleyball Finals at the end of August 2010. It was a challenge siting the sign as the centre court was a 100m plus from the nearest entry point to the beach.

However we made it and a special thanks goes to the RNLI Lifeguards who help to remove the sign on the final day.

Volleyball England is the recognised National Governing Body for Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Sitting Volleyball in England. Volleyball England is responsible for the development, promotion and delivery of Volleyball across England.

Variable Message Signs information

A variable- (also changeable-, electronic-, or dynamic-) message sign, often abbreviated VMS, CMS, or DMS, and in the UK known as a matrix sign, is an electronic traffic sign often used on roadways to give motorists and pedestrians information about special events. Such signs warn of traffic congestion, accidents, incidents, roadwork zones, or speed limits on a specific highway segment. In urban areas, VMS are used within parking guidance and information systems to guide drivers to available car parking spaces. They may also ask vehicles to take alternative routes, limit travel speed, warn of duration and location of the incidents or just inform of the traffic conditions.

A complete message on a panel generally includes a problem statement indicating incident, roadwork, stalled vehicle etc; a location statement indicating where the incident is located; an effect statement indicating lane closure, delay, etc and an action statement giving suggestion what to do traffic conditions ahead.

In some places, VMSes are set up with permanent, semi-static displays indicating predicted travel times to important traffic destinations such as major cities or interchanges along the route of a motorway.

Typical messages provide the following information:

  • Crashes, including vehicle spin-out or rollover
  • Stalls affecting normal flow in a lane or on shoulders
  • Non-recurring congestion, often a residual effect of cleared crash
  • Closures of an entire road
  • Downstream exit ramp closures
  • Debris on roadway
  • Vehicle fires
  • Short-term maintenance or construction lasting less than three days
  • Pavement failure alerts
  • AMBER Alerts and weather warnings
  • Travel times
  • Variable speed limits
  • Event information
  • Product launch or promotion

The information comes from a variety of traffic monitoring and surveillance systems. It is expected that by providing real-time information on special events on the oncoming road, VMS can improve vehicles’ route selection, reduce travel time, mitigate the severity and duration of incidents and improve the performance of the transportation network.

The COLOUR solar signs will be deployed prior to the event to give drivers advance warning of possible areas of congestion and information on the park & ride scheme.

During the event the signs which can be updated immediately via SMS or our web based application will be used in support of the traffic management plan and to provide event & sponsor Information at the centre ring inside the showground.

Managing Director Tony Price stated “ Bakewell show is a long established Blue Riband event in the country show calendar and Colour Mobile VMS ltd are extremely proud to have been awarded this contract.

This is exactly the type of event we envisaged supporting when forming the company. The visual impact of colour on our variable message signs combined with the flexibility offered by their mobility remote communications and use of solar power  significantly increase the number of applications where variable message signs can have an immediate positive effect at events of this nature.

We are looking forward to working with our new customer and developing a long standing relationship.
