NTIS DATEX II Portable Journey Time Variable Message Sign Solution

The NTIS DATEX II Portable Journey Time Solution, developed by MVIS in collaboration with National Highways (formerly Highways England), is a cutting-edge traffic management system that delivers real-time traffic data to road users. This innovative solution uses live data from the National Traffic Information Service (NTIS) and was the first system to display NTIS journey time data on portable variable message signs (VMS).

Ideal for major roadwork schemes over 4km in length, the NTIS DATEX II solution is fully compliant with Highways England’s Major Project Instruction MPI-54-062016. It refreshes journey time information every five minutes, displaying up-to-date travel times on any number of VMS-Cs deployed along the route. This helps reduce driver frustration, manage traffic flow, and improve safety by keeping road users informed in real time.

The system can detect congestion and delays within tens of metres, ensuring that the information displayed is highly accurate and relevant to the affected area. If journey times exceed a set threshold, custom alternative messages can be shown automatically. Additionally, the system can send automated email alerts to multiple stakeholders, providing instant updates and enabling them to override messages through MVIS’ WebStudio™ platform.

This portable journey time solution is ideal for temporary traffic management, major road projects, and infrastructure upgrades, offering a reliable and effective way to communicate vital travel information to the public.
