Tom Hooton: Warehouse & Manufacturing Supervisor

Tom is one of MVIS’ longest serving members of staff and we are pleased to have watched him move up and up since day one.

How long have you been with MVIS?:
I started at MVIS on 6th of January 2013 as a delivery and maintenance operative. I then got promoted to technical support after six months. This year I was promoted again to warehouse and manufacturing supervisor.

Job role:
I control the work in the warehouse, making sure all the jobs get done on time and are built and checked correctly.

I have one apprentice – George Sheldon  – who is doing really well. I also work in partner with the three delivery maintenance guys Mark Ashbee, Darren Slater and Tim Hill.

Recent projects:
I am involved in nearly every project and I try to involve my whole team as well so they are constantly learning. The most recent projects have been the M6 J22 CCTV, MTS upgrades and soon to come on the 26 x VMSC for the A14.

How did you get into the industry:
I have always worked in the electrical industry as I started as an apprentice myself, and when the job came up at MVIS I jumped at the chance to work for such a good and interesting company.

Most fulfilling part of your role:
The most fulfilling part of my role is seeing the final product at the end of a build because it makes the hard work and time put into it worthwhile. I find it very satisfying to see something I have built around the country.

More about me:
I am a very happy, outgoing person and love to spend time with my friends and family. I love playing rugby for my local team Matlock and I also spend a lot of time travelling to England and Leicester Tigers’ matches.

I have recently taken up running with my boss Anne Ashman to raise money for the charity Sands, as it is a charity very close to my heart. We are running 10 x 10k runs in 10 months and I am finding it very enjoyable and rewarding.

Improve short term road works projects with SPJTS

At MVIS we are always trying to deliver a service that can truly improve our customers’ work projects. As a result, we devised the solar powered journey time solution (SPJTS), which is an efficient and affordable package that will help to improve any short term road works project.

Our SPJTS brings together both the latest developments in industry software and hardware, which provides its users with an innovative and cost-effective solution to all short term road works. It is portable and solar powered, allowing it to be quickly transported from one location to another, where it can be installed with a minimum of fuss.

It allows users to make informed, reliable decisions as to how they can most effectively avoid journey disruption for road users. It can also help to warn motorists of any delays and give information as to the extent of those delays. In doing this, motorists are given the vital information they need to decide whether it would be best to take an alternative journey route.

The SPJTS incorporates a range of our high-tech messaging equipment, including:

  • Bartco VMS-A
  • Two Vysionics’ SkyHawk integrated ANPR cameras
  • MVIS’ Web Studio sign management software
  • Two of  MVIS’ new Solar 2012 multi-use trailers

The SPJTS maximises effectiveness by mounting the VMS-A system on a multi-use trailer, in advance of a viable exit route for motorists. This is possible due to the ability of the VMS-A to be altered remotely through the cloud server. As a result, road users have the option of staying to travel through the road works or to exit and find another route to their destination.

If you would like to contact us about our SPJTS, then please email us through our contact page or call us on 01629 580 570.

Spotlight on the Vector Integrated ANPR Camera

The Vector Integrated ANPR Camera from MVIS is a highly innovative, industry-leading product.

The camera integrates the pioneering ANPR processor with an advanced imaging system, giving users one, single product and getting rid of the need to separately house a processor at the job location.

The product components, like the pulsed LED illuminators, overview cameras and ANPR processor are capable of combining in a number of flexible variations. As a result, the camera system can be modified to perfectly meet the needs of the client and the job at hand. This flexibility includes any pairing of colour, day-night or monochrome cameras with infrared or illuminators.

The Vector camera can be set up to operate in a number of different ways. It can be programmed to work automatically, which allows it to auto-detect vehicles as they pass the camera’s view. Alternatively, it can be linked to a trigger system, so that the client can record weight in motion capture or only specific types of vehicles.

In addition to offering supreme flexibility, the system is also highly durable, allowing it to operate to the full in all types of weather and lighting conditions. For instance, if the camera is needed to operate when it is dark, pulsed LED illuminators can be set up, in either a visible or covert mode.

The Vector Integrated ANPR Camera comes with the Solar 2014 multi-use trailer platform. This facilitates the flexible combination of a range of our other products and also allows for the mobile transportation of the camera.

If you would like to talk with us about our innovative Vector Integrated ANPR Camera, please send us an email or call us on 01629 580 570.

A-One+ purchase 10 more signs following previous success

MVIS are delighted to announce that A-One+ have purchased 10 new variable message signs (VMS’s) following our successful partnership in 2013. During A-One+’s recent refurbishment of the A1, there were zero standing traffic related incidents, a result that was squarely attributed to the success of the VMS signs supplied by MVIS.

The operation ran from July-August 2013, with 10 VMS-C variable message signs operational during the A-One+’s refurbishment of the A1 western bypass between Newcastle and Gateshead.

A-One+ credited the highly visible pictograms with ensuring that there were no incidents during the entire 6 week redevelopment. When they had used fixed frame signs during a similar project in2009 there had been several incidents, which is why they turned to us.

The firm have purchased 10 more VMS signs for ta similar project, for use in a semi-permanent capacity on the same stretch of road. This repeat purchase is a testament to the customer’s belief in the capacity the hire signs demonstrated last year and their ability to ensure the safety of road users.

If you would like to talk to us about our VMS signs, please send us an email or call us on 01629 580 570.

Nottingham City Council continues partnership with MVIS

MVIS is delighted that Nottingham City Council has purchased three of our VMS signs to use help manage traffic in their ongoing £1billion infrastructure redevelopment project.

Nottingham has become one of the first European cities to integrate ITS traffic management solutions, incorporating a number of different products and control room service. They have reported that the solution has been exceptionally well received by Nottingham road users.

Our ITS traffic management solution has been implemented to help reduce congestion and delays to journey times during Nottingham’s £1billion redevelopment, which includes major improvements to both the city’s railway station and major junctions on the A453.

Our VMS signs help to inform road users of upcoming road works suggest alternative travel routes so that they can reach their destination on time. Our ITS solutions also incorporates CCTV, so that traffic levels can be monitored throughout the area affected by the road works. All of this equipment is solar powered, which helps to keep maintenance costs down by getting rid of the need for preliminary groundwork.

The purchase of three additional VMS signs indicates the Nottingham City Council have been delighted with the efficacy of the hired signs used to date. We’re happy to have another satisfied customer and we are thrilled with the results we have achieved so far.

For more information on our VMS signs, you can send us an email through our contact page or call us on 01629 580 570.

MVIS help to increase student safety at Hertfordshire University

MVIS recently completed some works for Hertfordshire University helping to increase student safety.

The university was concerned that increasing traffic and increasing speeds outside the university entrance was a potential danger to students. MVIS worked with the university’s security company to develop a traffic calming solution.

The radar uses the latest technology to collect consistently accurate traffic data in high definition. It operates in the 245MHz bandwidth and produces a radar beam with five times greater resolution than other radar traffic detection devices. The Dual Radar determines vehicle speed by measuring the delay from one radar beam to the next. This also determines vehicle direction. It then automatically sends a signal to a VMS, which instantly transmits a message to drivers that they have to slow down.

MVIS are expanding into Australia

MVIS is delighted to announce a joint venture with Bartco at Intertraffic Amsterdam 2014 (25th-28th March).

MVIS is expanding internationally and will be opening its MIVS AUS office in Melbourne, Australia. As a result, our range of bespoke, temporary ITS solutions will now be available to Australia and the southern hemisphere, allowing us to offer our beneficial services to a wider, international market.

Bartco, an Australian manufacturer of portable, solar powered, five colour matrix VMS, will be expanding into the European market. Bartco UK will be their sales and manufacturing division for Europe and will be based in Matlock, Derbyshire, alongside ourselves.

We will continue to manufacture portable ITS solutions including ANPR, CCTV, radar and lighting and supply these to the UK, European and Northern Hemisphere markets. Spotlight on the SOLAR 2012 Multi-Use Trailer Platform

The Solar 2012 Multi-Use Trailer Platform is an innovative mobile solution from Mobile Visual Information Systems. This unique product allows for the flexible combination of numerous temporary intelligent traffic solutions, and event management equipment.

The greatest benefit of the trailer platform is that it allows the user to combine a wide range of items from our VMS, lighting, CCTV, radar and ANPR categories. In addition to the allowance of flexible combination, the platform can be easily adjusted to meet the client’s specific needs.

The Solar 2012 offers an environmentally friendly and almost silent alternative to similar products. Control your colour mobile VMS from anywhere with our Web Studio

Here at MVIS we are constantly endeavouring to make our products easier and more flexible. With our Web Studio, you can achieve exactly that.

More and more in the modern world, the web is controlling what we do and how we work, making things faster and more convenient for everybody. With the Web Studio, we bring both of these qualities to our Colour Mobile VMS products. Its primary feature is that it allows you to operate and update the Colour Mobile VMS signs from any Wi-Fi enabled machine, like a laptop, mobile phone or tablet.

The innovative remote technology allows you to view a map, detailing all of the locations of your signs. It also enables you to zoom in so that you can see the current message on the sign and then update it to the latest message or alter the functionality (e.g. colour, design). As well as this, you will be able to receive SMS and email messages whenever a sign requires maintenance.

The Web Studio can also remotely control radar devices that have been attached to the signs, allowing you to change the speed limits or even schedule a change for future display messages. This mobile service is ideal for those operating a wide range of signs at any one time, like the police force, traffic agencies or local councils.

If you would like to contact us about our Web Studio systems, please email us through our contact page or call us on 01629 580 570.

Forest Support Services call on MVIS to help with UK flooding

Earlier this month, the south of the UK was hit by torrential downpours resulting in mass flooding on a scale not witnessed in the country for many years.  So many years, in fact, that this winter is officially the wettest since records began.

As the UK’s leading supplier of temporary solutions to the traffic sector, MVIS was called upon by Forest Support Services to implement two colour mobile VMS signs on the A22 near Croydon to help effectively manage the flow of traffic and warn motorists of changes to the road network.

The team at MVIS was able to respond quickly to the need for VMS on the A22, delivering and installing the solutions on the very night that the call came through to the head office.

General Manager at MVIS, Anne Ashman, comments: “In situations such as this, speed is of the upmost importance and a delay in response can play absolute havoc with roads and the motorists that need to use them.

“Because we have depots all over the country, our team were able to swiftly deliver two VMS signs to Forest Support Services and these were installed exactly where they needed them, and most importantly, where they needed them.  As a result, motorists were warned of driving conditions and the flow of traffic was managed safely.”

The two VMS signs on the A22 will be in place for a total of three weeks until conditions settle in the area.  If you would like more information on how VMS can help you with your requirements, call MVIS on 01629 580 570 or click here to send us an email and we’ll get right back to you.

Graeme Lee: UK Sales Manager

Graeme first started working in this industry over 10 years ago, when it was early days for portable VMS in the UK. This eventually led him to MVIS as its UK Sales Manager. He covers the entire UK, from Land’s End to John O’ Groats. New customers will more often than not see him first as a representative of MVIS.

How has your role & the industry changed over the time you’ve been with MVIS?

When I joined MVIS, the Olympic Games contract was underway. Following the games, we had to develop a network of customers as quickly as possible. I’ve been very fortunate in that most of these customers have remained with us since.

The industry has changed substantially over the last 10 years. There have been peaks and troughs in levels of investment, and a steady increase in the appetite for portable ITS solutions.

What’s a ‘normal’ day for you?

Visiting existing and potential customers throughout the UK. Attending meetings, trade shows, and lately more overseas business trips.

What is your favourite thing about working for MVIS?

I have always liked the “can do” mentality at MVIS. As the team has grown, the ethos has not changed. Every member of staff is crucial, and all are prepared to go the extra mile.

What’s been one of your favourite projects so far?

I’ve been involved in some interesting projects over the last few years. Without doubt, the most testing was the Project Orange scheme on the M1 corridor last year, which saw 156 new VMS units to be deployed on sections panning over 100 miles, in a very short time frame. Not only did we have to deliver them but we had to manufacture them too in a very short time frame.
