ITS Leaders unite to launch road maintenance safety first

Two leading players in the intelligent transport system (ITS) industry have joined forces to create the first temporary road maintenance safety solutions to combine industry-leading modular electronic perimeters and variable message signs (VMS), providing a cost-efficient method of improving the safety of both road workers and road users.

Leading temporary ITS solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), in partnership with the creator of the Intellicone temporary work zone safety system, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), launched multiple solutions at an event facilitated by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) at Bruntingthorpe Airfield yesterday (16th September 2014).

The innovations launched yesterday included the Safelane automated traffic management system and the Multisafe Smart VMS.

The Multisafe Smart VMS combines Intellicone contactless sensor technology with MVIS’ range of VMS. Intellicone’s Sentry sensor can be positioned to detect vehicles or personnel and to activate wirelessly the appropriate high visibility VMS message. The resulting solution can be used for over-height vehicle detection, dynamic work exit messaging and to detect speeding vehicles.

The works exit system was developed in close cooperation with Costain and TRL. The solution is currently undergoing trials during the installation of the smart motorway scheme between junctions 28 and 31 of the M1. The exit system detects when works traffic is vacating the work zone, triggering a high impact message on an Intellicone Sentry VMS from the Multisafe Smart VMS product group to alert oncoming road users.

The Safelane automated traffic management system combines Intellicone products with MVIS’ Multisafe Smart VMS to facilitate safer work zone traffic management by fewer personnel. Intellicone cone barriers and contactless sensors, paired with CCTV, enable Multisafe Smart VMS to help undertake work zone protection, as such avoiding the need to deploy high numbers of operatives in these dangerous areas. Any worksite breaches instantly alert the remaining traffic management operatives and workforce, whilst capturing live footage of errant vehicles. The Safelane system is highly modular, can be applied to most road closures and is expected to help achieve major cost savings for the industry.

Said MVIS managing director, Pat Musgrave: “The temporary MVIS/Intellicone road maintenance worker protection solutions have the capacity not only to improve worker safety but to do so cost-effectively.”

Added HRS director, Roger Poeth: “HRS and MVIS share a commitment to the development and application of technologically advanced ITS products and we look forward to unveiling further applications of the new safety solution later in the year.”

The MVIS/Intellicone corporate partnership relates to distribution as well as product development, and MVIS is now Intellicone’s exclusive hire partner.

Journey Time Solution first from MVIS

Leading temporary intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), has made its first temporary journey time solution (JTS) sale for long-term constant use on a smart motorway protect.

In partnership with traffic management specialist Vysionics, MVIS developed a temporary JTS for continuous operation throughout the two year installation of the smart motorway scheme between junctions 28 and 31 of the M1.

At an estimated cost of between £168m and £225m, the installation by international engineering and construction group, Costain, began in October 2013, and has an expected completion date of autumn 2015.

The temporary JTS was required in order to enhance the experience of 170,000 road users across both carriageways every day for the project’s entire duration, as they negotiate the roadworks involved in the transition of the section into a smart motorway, minimising journey disruption and promoting safety.

MVIS sold to Costain eight of its VMS-C signs to communicate with Vysionics’ own Vector integrated ANPR cameras via MVIS’ Web Studio web-based sign management and control system, providing real time journey information to drivers at strategic points along the route.

The cameras send vehicle number plate data back to a remote server which calculates journey times, and the average journey time is relayed to MVIS’ signs throughout the works. In this way, drivers are enabled to plan alternative routes as appropriate.

When necessary, control centre operators can override the default journey time information display with additional driver information, for example regarding incidents ahead, thereby negating the need for additional signs.

This is the second time that MVIS has worked in partnership with Vysionics on a temporary JTS for application during a smart motorway transition.  In 2012, the companies delivered a solution for use during the M4/5 managed motorway installation.

Last year, MVIS launched its own JTS in response to interest from a leading infrastructure services supplier. The package comprises a VMS-A, two Vysionics Vector ANPR cameras, MVIS’ web Studio sign management software and two MVIS Solar IP multi-use trailers.

Said Costain’s senior agent for traffic management, Howard Dukes:  “MVIS is establishing a name as a leader in temporary JTS, and the M1 solution is a reliable means of providing drivers with the information they need in order to negotiate roadworks safely and with minimum delay.”

Added MVIS’ sales manager, Graeme Lee:  “This is the first time that we have sold our signs for long-term, constant use within a JTS solution on a smart motorway scheme, and we are tremendously proud to be playing such an important role in this significant project.”

MVIS is part of the P&D (Holdings Company) group, membership of which ensures MVIS’ customers benefit from a wide pool of ITS expertise and resource.  Its ITS solutions incorporate a comprehensive range of products, including CCTV, radar, VMS, ANPR and Web Studio.

An innovative Journey Time Solution

For this week’s feature, we thought we’d take some time to feature another new product; the Journey Time Solution (JTS).

The JTS incorporates cutting-edge software and hardware into its system, giving users a comprehensive, affordable solution for all short-term road works projects.

This innovative traffic solution was developed in response to interest from a leading infrastructure services supplier, which serves to reflect our dedication to developing new technologies and solutions in partnership with both public and private sector traffic management organisations.

Its portable design ensures that it can be quickly and easily installed at the required location, getting rid of the need for any civil engineering or external power provision. In addition to this, it enables road users to make informed decisions on how best to minimise the affects of journey disruption. It does this by allowing the user to programme it so that tic an warn road users of delays or the extent of their severity, helping drivers to make an informed decision as to whether it would be more effective to take a different route.

The JTS incorporates the VMS-A, two Vysonics’ Vector integrated ANPR cameras, our Web Studio software and two of our Solar Intelligent Platforms (IP).

The VMS-A and one of the Solar IP’s are placed at the entry to the road works, whilst the other Solar IP is positioned in advance of an exit route. The ANPR Vector cameras gather information and transmit it via a cloud server. The Web Studio is used to display this information on the sign, which gives road users all of the available information and allows them to decide whether they should endure the road works or utilise the exit.
