VMS Units in the Frame for an Overhaul

Here at MVIS, we have been busy this week starting the grand task of reconditioning all of our variable message signs (VMS) – 150 of them to be exact!

This is in order to match the same specification and quality of our newly manufactured VMS units, so as not to distract from the message.

Previously, the MVIS frames were yellow to match the solar intelligent platforms and the trailers, but in order to help focus the road users’ attention, we are changing all of our frames to black in order to direct focus to our customer’s message, rather than the surroundings.

Now, all frames will be black to better focus on the message
Now, all frames will be black to better focus on the message

Fear not though – the screens themselves can still display up to five different colours, so your message will be seen and understood clearer than ever!

If you would like to talk to MVIS about your VMS needs, please don’t hesitate to get in touch on 01629 580570.

Best use of new technology in the highways industry

Partners MVIS and HRS have created the first temporary road worker safety solutions which utilise variable message signs with modular electronic perimeter equipment.

It combines modular electronic perimeters and VMS, improving road worker safety costs effectively.

It is hoped that this will help reduce the number of road worker casualties as well as saving time and money, allowing road work projects to be completed on time and safely.

An introduction to Matt Felce

Matt Felce: Technical Manager

What’s it like to work at MVIS?

Working at MVIS is very rewarding. I have seen the company grow enormously in the 3 years that I have been here from a VMS supplier to the “go to” company for temporary ITS solutions.

What’s been the best MVIS projects you’ve worked on to date and why?

They are all rewarding in their own way. From the safety solutions we have developed along with Intellicone to the manufacture of our own trailers in the UK.

How are you finding day-to-day life at MVIS?

It’s great to work with such a close knit team who all work tirelessly with a common goal of making MVIS the biggest and best VMS and portable ITS supplier in the UK.

What recent projects have you worked on?

We have just deployed 8 signs around Tower Bridge that are automatically activated when the bridge is raised with the aim of lowering vehicle pollution.

What is the most fulfilling part of your role?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is the praise we receive from our customers and seeing the company grow from strength to strength.

What’s an average day for you?

I am very fortunate in that I don’t have an average day. It can involve anything from meeting with customers discussing designing a new solution to solve their problems to going to awards dinners for our innovation and everything in between.

MVIS: DEDICATED TO IMPROVING WORK-ZONE SAFETY IN 2014 AND BEYOND

The average fatality rate for those maintaining the UK road network is one of the highest amongst employment sectors.  Highways Agency figures show that between 2009 and 2013, eight road workers died and 317 were injured while working on or near motorways and major A roads in England.

MVIS is dedicated to developing innovative new ITS solutions to help protect work-zone personnel, and is proud that in 2014, in partnership with Highways Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), it launched its first collection of temporary road maintenance safety solutions.

Highways Agency statistics show that work-zone incursions are one of the most significant risks to road workers.

Road workers on BAM Morgan Sindall Joint Venture’s M62 and M1 junction 39 to 42 smart motorway project recently became the first to benefit from the safety credentials of MVIS’ and HRS’ pioneering temporary overheight detection solution.

One element of the M62 and M1 junction 39 to 42 smart motorway project involves the suspension of scaffolding beneath a bridge.  The road remains periodically open to road-users, and therefore personnel operating from the scaffolding require protection from errant oncoming high-sided vehicles.

Signs in advance of the bridge direct high-sided vehicles away from the structure.  A sensor detects incursions by errant vehicles, activating a message on a VMS, alerting drivers to their breach and enabling them to turn round and find an alternative route.  Simultaneously, an audible alarm on the scaffolding warns workers of the breach, allowing them sufficient time to reach a position of safety.

According to BMA Morgan Sindall Joint Venture stores manager, Chris Hunter, who commissioned the solution in September:  “The new solution has quickly proved its worth; within the first week, there were three incursions, all of which were quickly remedied as the drivers were instantly alerted and able to turn around to find an alternative route.”

The role of ITS in improving road worker safety is not limited to helping to tackle incursions.  New solutions are being developed by companies such as MVIS and HRS to facilitate safer work zone traffic management by fewer personnel, allowing traffic management organisations to avoid the deployment of such high numbers of road workers in these dangerous areas.

MVIS and Intellicone look forward to launching new interpretations of their work-zone safety solutions in 2015.  While the UK has a long way to go before we fulfill the Highways Agency’s Aiming for Zero road worker safety target, there is no doubt that as an industry, we are taking huge strides in the right direction.

PIONEERING OVERHEIGHT SOLUTION PROVES SMART MOTORWAY SAFETY CREDENTIALS

Road workers on BAM Morgan Sindall Joint Venture’s M62 and M1 J39 to 42 smart motorway project have become the first to benefit from the safety credentials of a pioneering temporary overheight detection solution.

The group leased the solution from temporary intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), soon after its launch in September by MVIS and its partner, Intellicone temporary work zone safety system creator, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS).

The overheight detection solution is part of the partners’ work-zone safety portfolio, the first temporary road maintenance safety offer combining modular electronic perimeters and variable message signs (VMS).

One element of the smart motorway project involves the suspension of scaffolding beneath a bridge. The road remains periodically open to road-users, and therefore personnel operating from the scaffolding require protection from errant oncoming high-sided vehicles.

Signs in advance of the bridge direct high-sided vehicles away from the structure. An Intellicone Sentry Beam detects errant vehicles, activating a message on MVIS’ VMS-A variable message sign, alerting drivers to their breach and enabling them to turn round and find an alternative route.

Simultaneously, an audible Intellicone Portable Site Alarm on the scaffolding warns workers of the breach, allowing them sufficient time to reach a position of safety.

While the MVIS/Intellicone temporary overheight detection solution was originally designed to protect workers from errant vehicles in temporary ground based worksites, the customer identified its potential to protect bridge personnel from high-sided road user vehicles during its smart motorway project.

Said BAM Morgan Sindall Joint Venture stores manager, Chris Hunter, who commissioned the solution in September: “Historically, BAM and Morgan Sindall have warned drivers of overhead obstructions via goalposts or “hangman” and clatterboard constructions. Neither were as effective as the MVIS/Intellicone solution at halting errant high-sided vehicles, and neither simultaneously alerted overhead personnel of safety breaches.

“The new solution has quickly proved its worth; within the first week, there were three breaches, all of which were quickly remedied as the drivers were instantly alerted and able to turn around and find an alternative route.”

Said MVIS’ managing director, Pat Musgrave, on behalf of MVIS and HRS: “We are pleased that our new temporary overheight detection solution has been so quickly embraced by the transport management market, and that it is already demonstrating its ability to promote worker safety.”

The MVIS/Intellicone temporary overheight detection solution was launched alongside the Safelane automated traffic management system, combining Intellicone products with MVIS’ VMS to facilitate safer work-zone traffic management by fewer personnel. Further applications will be launched in 2015.

MVIS works in partnership with traffic management organisations, creating for them bespoke ITS solutions. MVIS’ innovative, solar powered solutions incorporate monitoring and visual information equipment, all featuring leading-edge technology: VMS, ANPR and CCTV cameras and radar. Its VMS signs are manufactured in the UK by Bartco UK.
