An introduction to Matt Felce

Matt Felce: Technical Manager

What’s it like to work at MVIS?

Working at MVIS is very rewarding. I have seen the company grow enormously in the 3 years that I have been here from a VMS supplier to the “go to” company for temporary ITS solutions.

What’s been the best MVIS projects you’ve worked on to date and why?

They are all rewarding in their own way. From the safety solutions we have developed along with Intellicone to the manufacture of our own trailers in the UK.

How are you finding day-to-day life at MVIS?

It’s great to work with such a close knit team who all work tirelessly with a common goal of making MVIS the biggest and best VMS and portable ITS supplier in the UK.

What recent projects have you worked on?

We have just deployed 8 signs around Tower Bridge that are automatically activated when the bridge is raised with the aim of lowering vehicle pollution.

What is the most fulfilling part of your role?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is the praise we receive from our customers and seeing the company grow from strength to strength.

What’s an average day for you?

I am very fortunate in that I don’t have an average day. It can involve anything from meeting with customers discussing designing a new solution to solve their problems to going to awards dinners for our innovation and everything in between.

MVIS: DEDICATED TO IMPROVING WORK-ZONE SAFETY IN 2014 AND BEYOND

The average fatality rate for those maintaining the UK road network is one of the highest amongst employment sectors.  Highways Agency figures show that between 2009 and 2013, eight road workers died and 317 were injured while working on or near motorways and major A roads in England.

MVIS is dedicated to developing innovative new ITS solutions to help protect work-zone personnel, and is proud that in 2014, in partnership with Highways Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), it launched its first collection of temporary road maintenance safety solutions.

Highways Agency statistics show that work-zone incursions are one of the most significant risks to road workers.

Road workers on BAM Morgan Sindall Joint Venture’s M62 and M1 junction 39 to 42 smart motorway project recently became the first to benefit from the safety credentials of MVIS’ and HRS’ pioneering temporary overheight detection solution.

One element of the M62 and M1 junction 39 to 42 smart motorway project involves the suspension of scaffolding beneath a bridge.  The road remains periodically open to road-users, and therefore personnel operating from the scaffolding require protection from errant oncoming high-sided vehicles.

Signs in advance of the bridge direct high-sided vehicles away from the structure.  A sensor detects incursions by errant vehicles, activating a message on a VMS, alerting drivers to their breach and enabling them to turn round and find an alternative route.  Simultaneously, an audible alarm on the scaffolding warns workers of the breach, allowing them sufficient time to reach a position of safety.

According to BMA Morgan Sindall Joint Venture stores manager, Chris Hunter, who commissioned the solution in September:  “The new solution has quickly proved its worth; within the first week, there were three incursions, all of which were quickly remedied as the drivers were instantly alerted and able to turn around to find an alternative route.”

The role of ITS in improving road worker safety is not limited to helping to tackle incursions.  New solutions are being developed by companies such as MVIS and HRS to facilitate safer work zone traffic management by fewer personnel, allowing traffic management organisations to avoid the deployment of such high numbers of road workers in these dangerous areas.

MVIS and Intellicone look forward to launching new interpretations of their work-zone safety solutions in 2015.  While the UK has a long way to go before we fulfill the Highways Agency’s Aiming for Zero road worker safety target, there is no doubt that as an industry, we are taking huge strides in the right direction.

PIONEERING OVERHEIGHT SOLUTION PROVES SMART MOTORWAY SAFETY CREDENTIALS

Road workers on BAM Morgan Sindall Joint Venture’s M62 and M1 J39 to 42 smart motorway project have become the first to benefit from the safety credentials of a pioneering temporary overheight detection solution.

The group leased the solution from temporary intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), soon after its launch in September by MVIS and its partner, Intellicone temporary work zone safety system creator, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS).

The overheight detection solution is part of the partners’ work-zone safety portfolio, the first temporary road maintenance safety offer combining modular electronic perimeters and variable message signs (VMS).

One element of the smart motorway project involves the suspension of scaffolding beneath a bridge. The road remains periodically open to road-users, and therefore personnel operating from the scaffolding require protection from errant oncoming high-sided vehicles.

Signs in advance of the bridge direct high-sided vehicles away from the structure. An Intellicone Sentry Beam detects errant vehicles, activating a message on MVIS’ VMS-A variable message sign, alerting drivers to their breach and enabling them to turn round and find an alternative route.

Simultaneously, an audible Intellicone Portable Site Alarm on the scaffolding warns workers of the breach, allowing them sufficient time to reach a position of safety.

While the MVIS/Intellicone temporary overheight detection solution was originally designed to protect workers from errant vehicles in temporary ground based worksites, the customer identified its potential to protect bridge personnel from high-sided road user vehicles during its smart motorway project.

Said BAM Morgan Sindall Joint Venture stores manager, Chris Hunter, who commissioned the solution in September: “Historically, BAM and Morgan Sindall have warned drivers of overhead obstructions via goalposts or “hangman” and clatterboard constructions. Neither were as effective as the MVIS/Intellicone solution at halting errant high-sided vehicles, and neither simultaneously alerted overhead personnel of safety breaches.

“The new solution has quickly proved its worth; within the first week, there were three breaches, all of which were quickly remedied as the drivers were instantly alerted and able to turn around and find an alternative route.”

Said MVIS’ managing director, Pat Musgrave, on behalf of MVIS and HRS: “We are pleased that our new temporary overheight detection solution has been so quickly embraced by the transport management market, and that it is already demonstrating its ability to promote worker safety.”

The MVIS/Intellicone temporary overheight detection solution was launched alongside the Safelane automated traffic management system, combining Intellicone products with MVIS’ VMS to facilitate safer work-zone traffic management by fewer personnel. Further applications will be launched in 2015.

MVIS works in partnership with traffic management organisations, creating for them bespoke ITS solutions. MVIS’ innovative, solar powered solutions incorporate monitoring and visual information equipment, all featuring leading-edge technology: VMS, ANPR and CCTV cameras and radar. Its VMS signs are manufactured in the UK by Bartco UK.

Pat Musgrave: Managing Director

A well-known name in the ITS industry for 25 years, Pat Musgrave is certainly one of life’s entrepreneurs and is responsible for bringing industry firsts to the UK’s road and event markets. In just 12 short months, Pat has set up a sister company to MVIS, Bartco UK, launched a new partnership with Intellicone HRS, which has seen the introduction of the first temporary road maintenance safety solutions to combine industry-leading modular electronic perimeters and variable message signs,  and secured several large contracts.

How did you come to manage MVIS?

I took over from Tony Price in September 2013 to become MVIS’ managing director, while remaining managing director of P&D Specialist Services, a transport technology contractor. P&D’s union with MVIS (then Colour Mobile) started with its involvement in the deployment of almost 200 VMS units for the Olympic Route Network contract for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  It was believed to be the largest single deployment of solar powered VMS in the world.

In 2013 MVIS rebranded at the same time as launching a series of new ITS solutions, including a portable solar powered journey time solution and the Solar Intelligent Platform, the only product on the market facilitating the mounting of multiple products on a single, solar powered, mobile platform.

So, what’s been happening the past 12 months you’ve been at the MVIS helm?

We’ve got a great reputation in the industry for being innovative and we’ve certainly been living up to that over the past year. Most recently we have brought new solutions to road safety along with our new partner Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS) which includes Safelane automated traffic management system and the Multisafe Smart VMS, which not only improves road worker safety but does so cost effectively. We’ll be demonstrating this at Seeing is Believing.

We’ve developed our temporary journey time solution (JTS) for long-term constant use, in partnership with Vysionics, throughout Costain’s two year installation of the smart motorway scheme between junctions 28 and 31 of the M1.

In March this year our sister company Bartco UK, Europe’s first manufacturer of portable, solar powered, five colour matrix VMS was launched alongside MVIS AUS, the new Australian division of MVIS Ltd. We’re already seeing the benefits of having our products manufactured in the UK and we’re growing at such a rate we’re now looking at new premises.

The past 12 months we’ve been instrumental in reducing accidents on UK roads with the installation of 10 VMS-Cs during A-Ones+’s northbound refurbishment of the A1 western bypass between Newcastle and Gateshead. Displays were remotely switched from speed roundels to three colour pictograms in the event of standing traffic ensuring there were zero standing-traffic related incidents during their six week installation. An identical project on the southbound carriageway in 2009 using fixed frame signs saw several such incidents.

So, that was the last 12 months, can you tell us more about the next 12?

We’ve always got new projects in the pipeline and MVIS is continually evolving. I’m excited about how MVIS will grow now we have manufacturing in the UK through sister company Bartco UK, which covers the Northern Hemisphere. We currently have  a new product in testing too, however my marketing company would shoot me if I let you know anything about that! Further MVIS/Intellicone solutions will be launched soon.

ITS Leaders unite to launch road maintenance safety first

Two leading players in the intelligent transport system (ITS) industry have joined forces to create the first temporary road maintenance safety solutions to combine industry-leading modular electronic perimeters and variable message signs (VMS), providing a cost-efficient method of improving the safety of both road workers and road users.

Leading temporary ITS solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), in partnership with the creator of the Intellicone temporary work zone safety system, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), launched multiple solutions at an event facilitated by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) at Bruntingthorpe Airfield yesterday (16th September 2014).

The innovations launched yesterday included the Safelane automated traffic management system and the Multisafe Smart VMS.

The Multisafe Smart VMS combines Intellicone contactless sensor technology with MVIS’ range of VMS. Intellicone’s Sentry sensor can be positioned to detect vehicles or personnel and to activate wirelessly the appropriate high visibility VMS message. The resulting solution can be used for over-height vehicle detection, dynamic work exit messaging and to detect speeding vehicles.

The works exit system was developed in close cooperation with Costain and TRL. The solution is currently undergoing trials during the installation of the smart motorway scheme between junctions 28 and 31 of the M1. The exit system detects when works traffic is vacating the work zone, triggering a high impact message on an Intellicone Sentry VMS from the Multisafe Smart VMS product group to alert oncoming road users.

The Safelane automated traffic management system combines Intellicone products with MVIS’ Multisafe Smart VMS to facilitate safer work zone traffic management by fewer personnel. Intellicone cone barriers and contactless sensors, paired with CCTV, enable Multisafe Smart VMS to help undertake work zone protection, as such avoiding the need to deploy high numbers of operatives in these dangerous areas. Any worksite breaches instantly alert the remaining traffic management operatives and workforce, whilst capturing live footage of errant vehicles. The Safelane system is highly modular, can be applied to most road closures and is expected to help achieve major cost savings for the industry.

Said MVIS managing director, Pat Musgrave: “The temporary MVIS/Intellicone road maintenance worker protection solutions have the capacity not only to improve worker safety but to do so cost-effectively.”

Added HRS director, Roger Poeth: “HRS and MVIS share a commitment to the development and application of technologically advanced ITS products and we look forward to unveiling further applications of the new safety solution later in the year.”

The MVIS/Intellicone corporate partnership relates to distribution as well as product development, and MVIS is now Intellicone’s exclusive hire partner.

Journey Time Solution first from MVIS

Leading temporary intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions provider, Mobile Visual Information Systems Ltd (MVIS), has made its first temporary journey time solution (JTS) sale for long-term constant use on a smart motorway protect.

In partnership with traffic management specialist Vysionics, MVIS developed a temporary JTS for continuous operation throughout the two year installation of the smart motorway scheme between junctions 28 and 31 of the M1.

At an estimated cost of between £168m and £225m, the installation by international engineering and construction group, Costain, began in October 2013, and has an expected completion date of autumn 2015.

The temporary JTS was required in order to enhance the experience of 170,000 road users across both carriageways every day for the project’s entire duration, as they negotiate the roadworks involved in the transition of the section into a smart motorway, minimising journey disruption and promoting safety.

MVIS sold to Costain eight of its VMS-C signs to communicate with Vysionics’ own Vector integrated ANPR cameras via MVIS’ Web Studio web-based sign management and control system, providing real time journey information to drivers at strategic points along the route.

The cameras send vehicle number plate data back to a remote server which calculates journey times, and the average journey time is relayed to MVIS’ signs throughout the works. In this way, drivers are enabled to plan alternative routes as appropriate.

When necessary, control centre operators can override the default journey time information display with additional driver information, for example regarding incidents ahead, thereby negating the need for additional signs.

This is the second time that MVIS has worked in partnership with Vysionics on a temporary JTS for application during a smart motorway transition.  In 2012, the companies delivered a solution for use during the M4/5 managed motorway installation.

Last year, MVIS launched its own JTS in response to interest from a leading infrastructure services supplier. The package comprises a VMS-A, two Vysionics Vector ANPR cameras, MVIS’ web Studio sign management software and two MVIS Solar IP multi-use trailers.

Said Costain’s senior agent for traffic management, Howard Dukes:  “MVIS is establishing a name as a leader in temporary JTS, and the M1 solution is a reliable means of providing drivers with the information they need in order to negotiate roadworks safely and with minimum delay.”

Added MVIS’ sales manager, Graeme Lee:  “This is the first time that we have sold our signs for long-term, constant use within a JTS solution on a smart motorway scheme, and we are tremendously proud to be playing such an important role in this significant project.”

MVIS is part of the P&D (Holdings Company) group, membership of which ensures MVIS’ customers benefit from a wide pool of ITS expertise and resource.  Its ITS solutions incorporate a comprehensive range of products, including CCTV, radar, VMS, ANPR and Web Studio.
